What race would make a good warmage. Any suggestions are welcome as long as the race is +1 LA or less. Right now what i'm considering are Human, Hobgoblin or Ashertai from Sandstorm, but i;d like something better

What's with all of these "Race for a XX" threads lately?

The best race for a Warmage is one you are happy to play as.

Halfling...Well maybe but I just don't like the idea of being small and holding up the rest of the party because I only move 2o feet and later when I get medium armor only 15 feet. But still they get nice bonuses to throwing weapons and saves. What about a Kalashtar from eberron? Are they any good.

If you're going to be a full caster, you don't want any LA.
Any LA +0 with an DEX, CON, INT, or CHA bonus is fine, or at least if it doesn't have a penalty to any of those. If you can be small size, the size bonus to AC is never bad, and those races usually have -2 STR, which you won't care about.
Humans are, of course, good for everything.

Kalashtar are okay. They shine more with psionic races, but they should still be fine...

I KNOW! It's so weird that people can't seem to pick their own class/race combos any more...

I cna pick class/race combos but I've played a few different things and dont want to just make a powerful build. Also sometimes you just want to have feed back from people that may have played that combo and something they didn't think about happened. LIke having a jerk Dm that messes up the entire game by sending your serial killer fighter back to the city he was a serial killer in and just because I have a few vile feats like Tall, Teeth and claw everyoen thinks i'm a demon and wants to kill me. So its not so much about not knowing what to do its more about asking opinions and be indecisive. and the Kalashtar know that I look at them are like a half elf with one psi ability.

I would say elf, their weapon proficiencies add nicely to the warmage's, and dex is always useful to a caster. One of the sub-races that boost Int would be good.

I would only say Kalashtar if you plan on becoming a cerebromancer, although the ability to select some psionic feats would be a bonus.

Dwarves could make good warmages, and would be unusual and a change from the straight-up dwarf fighter I seem to see everywhere.

I would avoid any level adjustment races if I could (although a tiefling could be cool).

The only problem is that Dwarves get -2 CHA, and that's the Warmage's casting stat.

However, just because I feel like telling you, I think that's the worst thought-out racial ability modifier ever. In my games, dwarves get -2 DEX instead...

If you're allowed those LA +1 races as if there was no level adjustment, be an Aasimar.

Otherwise, Human is good (bonus feat and all)

well, here are my sugestions and the reasons behind them.

1:human. due to the bonus feat you can take the procosious apprentice feat (complete arcane, near the back of the book next to collegenate wizard.) giving you a second level spell slot. if you choose a fire spell you can take the fiery burst feat and do 2d6 fire damage to a 5ft square every turn.

2: Grey Elf (I think), this guy from the Monster manual get's +2 to int, which is good for your warmage edge.

3: spell-scale (races of the dragon) these guys have -2 con and +2 cha. their blood quickening abalites are very useful for warmages.

I second the vote for a Gray Elf. These guys are ideal for most classes and the high dex and int would be great for a warmage.

Ill second the Kalashtar comment. Fun but way more psionic. Elf works really well with Warmage, almost nay elf at that. Maybe if you can find a non - Cha dwarf variant it would work pretty cool.

Mountain Dwarf from PGtF. +2 Con, -2 Dex.

Dream Dwarf would also be good, they have the same abality adjustments as above and cast earth spells at +1 caster level, as well as being able to see etherreal creatures.

I like Aasimar warmages.

Seconded. I'm playing one through Dungeon's Savage Tide adventure path, at the moment. It started at 1st level, but the DM let me play out the level adjustment like the rules in EPH, for Half-Giants etc.

I am playing a Warmage in an Eberron campaign. He is a Half-elf. All the elf racial traits. I was planning to go into Heir of Siberys PrC. I just like the storm spells.

My 2cents worth.

it's +2 LA, but the Half Fey from Fiend Folio works amazingly well as a warmage. +4 Cha, spell-like abilities including charm person at will, immunities and wings with decent speed and manuverability make up for a lot of the warmage's weaknesses. If you're playing an LA buyoff game (Unearthed Arcana), or using the savage progressions of the main dungeons and dragons web page, you can't go far wrong.

Best thing is, as it's a template, add it to whatever race you like that's already good. Half Fey Changling works really well, as well as Half-Fey Cat Hengeyokai for a stealthy build.

Alternately, use the Half-Nymph from Dragon #313, which has +'s to all stats and +6 to cha, as well as the ability to stun anyone withing 30ft as a free action. Again, +2 LA though. Also in that issue is the Ghost Elf, with some nice spell-like abilities per level.

Frankly, a Warmage is a one-trick pony, though that one trick is a pretty good one. You want to be picking a race that, as well as complementing your abilities at blowing stuff up, adds to the versitility of the class. Spell-like abilities, special qualities, natural attack forms or alternate movement modes all help keep the Warmage from being a fifth character, and some builds can even out-do the main damage dealer for round-by-round damage.

P.S: What feat choices are you considering, and is your DM allowing Flaws, and Traits. Quick could be a very good trait if you're worried about a slow halfling (+10ft base land, -1HP/level)

If you have no problem with LA then you could be a catfolk from miniatures handbook. they have a +4 DEX and +2 CHA.

Well if we are talking about a +2 LA then the petal is the way to go. +8 Cha, +10 Dex, +4 Int, +4 Con, DR 5/cold iron, Tiny and flying. Their only penalty is to STR. They have some other good abilities as well. They are listed as cohorts, but with stats like these there is no reason they should play second fiddle to anyone.

The only issue is thematics. If you can imagine a miltant tough as nails fairy with a penchant for destruction, then go for it. It is truly worth the LA for the save DC's alone. Of course there is the AC (nearly all touch BTW). Take Abjurant Champion as soon as you can and pick up a ranged weapon. While your base damage would be 1, the effects you can apply to it would be great. Convince your DM to let you qualify for arcane archer and dip for two levels. If this isn't bad enough then just take leadership and get petal followers just for the backup chorus. With enough tiny minions you could start qualifying for swarm rules.

Oops. 36 hours without sleep. Time for bed.

But petal... seriously.

How abou warforged? Yeah, the CHA penalty sucks, but you are a warforged warmage. It's actually pretty good; you get a lot of immunities, built-in-armor, light fortification, and you look cool.

Chaos Gnome:D just because they're cool and get a neat +2 CHA and immunity to confusion like Al Murray "I was never confused!"

I'd more likely go human though, those bonus skill points and that bonus feat always comes in handy for a magic based class

Then again, there is always the Kobold. The only problem being -4 str, -2 con. But they get +2 Dex and have a nice starting AC even with Light Studded Leather (3).

They also can get a SLA by using a 100gp gem. (Identify with no material 1/day)

Later they can boost it to 3/day and can gain +1 to Caster Level.

Not too bad. I am running an elemental variant with abilities based on the DragonSpawn Arcaniss. It is working out nicely, aside from the huge penalty against cold spells (not just damage). The only thing is, this variant cant get the regular kobold abilities, that I listed above.

If you like dragons, and your character is either LN, LG, NG, CE, CN or NE , then small characters are best.

Q:Why?

A: Step one get Acquire Familiar feat (Complete Arcane) at Lvl 9 If you are CN, CE or NE, or level 12 if LN, LG or NG. (You can of course get it sooner or later, it's good to get it early, but it's useless to have them earlier then 9 or 12 depending on alignment)

Step 2: Get Dragon Familiar feat (Draconomicon) at 12 if CN, CE or NE or lvl 15 if LN, LG or NG.

Step 3: Pay 100gp for a familiar ritual, Chose a Red (CN, CE or NE) or Gold (LN, LG or NG) dragon wyrmling familiar. (They are Medium sized)

Step 4: Voilą: Free Dragon Mount.

Drow would have been excellent, if it hadn't been for the hefty +2 LA.
Weapon Proficiencies, Spell Resistance, +2 Dex, Int and Cha (even though -2 Con can be felt a bit) as well as a few nifty special abilites such as extreme Darkvision and immunities.

Otherwise, Human or Aasimar Lite is a good bet if you like their combat abilites; Grey Elf if you plan to be doing damage as a spellcaster; Halfling or Gnome if you like the extra defence and bonus to hit with Rays. (Chaos Gnome's a good one there.)
