| selenia03-22-07, 10:19 AM | I`m looking for a good race for my scout4/ranger16 archer build. It has to have scout or ranger as favorite class, max la +1 andit would be nice if it had a bonus to dex. The only ones I could find are human, half elf and tundra halfling without a la. And catfolk and Poisondusk lizardfolk with a la +1. Are tere any other options? Or is there a way to change the favorite class of a race? Almost al D&D books are allowed, dut no dragon magazins. Thanks for your help, Selenia |
| The_Shaman03-22-07, 02:53 PM | Wood elf: +2 str, +2 dex, -2 con, -2 int make it a fine ranger race. You probably have enough skill points as it is, and composite bows are nice. Also, ranger is a favored class, so no XP penalties for you. You can add a template if you want, but most that give extra dex do it at the price of constitution, which you probably won't want. If you can live with the idea, the shadowwalker template in UE is good for the dex, hiding and spell-likes, . The feytouched template (Fiend Folio) iirc also gave a dexterity bonus (and other decent things, like immunity to mind-affecting effects), but also has a penalty to constitution. The draconic template (Draconomicon) boosts strength, con and cha, and gives some minor extras, and is interesting if you have to do some melee. (BTW, I skipped the mineral warrior from Underdark as it's quite unsuitable thematically for archers, even though it's powerful) |
| highbulp03-22-07, 02:56 PM | Or is there a way to change the favorite class of a race? There's a feat in UA (and so also in the SRD) called Extra Favored Class. It does exactly what it seems like it should do. |
| Nat_2003-22-07, 02:56 PM | Wood Elves are really good, i cant remember the last time i havent used one... my Warlock was one, and he was the tank for my party... kinda tells ya something of the race |
| The_Shaman03-22-07, 02:58 PM | Seriously, I've been thinking about a w.e. draconic ranger/scout or a ranger/barbarian. The extras and abilities of the race race make it very tempting for any warrior. |
| Vrykolas2k03-22-07, 02:59 PM | I don't know anything about builds, but a great character would be a wood elf. |
| Nat_2003-22-07, 02:59 PM | w.e. draconic??? what is that??? |
| The_Shaman03-22-07, 03:01 PM | Template from the Draconomicon. Basically they broke half-dragon in 3 steps, and this template has only the 1st one. |
| Nat_2003-22-07, 03:03 PM | hmm sounds cool... LA of just +1??? |
| The_Shaman03-22-07, 03:10 PM | Well, half-dragon isn't exactly bad for a LA +3 (although it's not among the killer templates either). The others I've listed bring spell-likes and some nifty immunities, this one is basically straight. It's a powerful, but not necessarily broken +1. Half-ogre or half-minotaur would imo be more powerful if you want brute strength. Basically you for once get something worthwhile for that lost level. |
| Nat_2003-22-07, 03:15 PM | So what are all the junk they get? bonuses to STR and CON and a dragon blood subtype? |
| The_Shaman03-22-07, 03:34 PM | that, a bit cha, and basically improved unarmed strike (1d3 claws, har-har). Also some assorted minor candy. Check here: http://crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Templates.pdf |
| selenia03-22-07, 05:54 PM | I do not like the woodelves because their penalty to con. Also the bonus to strengh isn`t realy important, because most of the damage is comming from the skirmish ability. I prefere a small race with a bonus to dex. I really like the wisper gnome, but they have rogue as favored class. I think I`m going for the feat to give him an extra favored class. thanxs for all the reactions. Selenia |

Ok, let's see what we have in the UA with a ranger favored class: arctic halflings (ranger is a favored class, usual bonuses), jungle dwarf (I suppose it won't work, though). Also, I think desert elves, by their description, should have ranger or scout as a favored class (they're +2 dex -2 Str), but apparently they didn't include it. I don't see what's the problem with an archer having lower con (they're not supposed to get hit) or higher strength for better composite bows, but you know best. The UA arctic halfling might just be what you're looking for. |
