I'm looking for a race that grants proficiency in a martial (or exotic), one-handed weapon. ...and, is good for a Cleric.

Basically, I'd like my Cleric to be able to wield a substantial one-hander without having to take MWP or the War domain. Something d8 with a crit better than standard (20 x2) would be perfect!

Oh, and LA +0 would be preferable. I could manage LA +1, but nothing higher.

Any thoughts?

Elf comes to mind

Yeah, that was the only one I could come up with too. Wood Elf might fit the bill slightly better. There must be something else out there.

core aasimaar (monster manual)

outsider traits

energy resistance
darkvision
proficiency in all simple weapons, martial weapons and light armor
Daylight 1/day
+2 wis +2 cha
+2 listen, search, spot
L.A.+1

Basically, Your grandma/grandpa was an angel nad your mom/dad was half celestial, (most celestials are female and age extremely slow) i'm guessing at least 69% of the aasimaars, elves, and halfelves are female.

Underfolk (RoD)... Heavy pick... X4 critical, BOOM, BOOM BAYBAY! Extra skill points are neat too...

I am unable to confirm your claim that Aasimars have a racial proficiency with simple and martial weapons. I looked in both the MM and RoD. Let me know the source of such a claim. Thanks.

He's right... I withdraw my suggestion... go with the Aasimar...

Hmmm.... I must admit: the features and traits included in that description of Outsiders seem to good to be true. Not only does any Outsider get weapon and armor proficiencies; they get full BAB, all good saves, d8 HD, and max skill points. Is that true?

It seems like this description in the glossary of the MM is meant for Outsiders as monsters (without a class), not characters (with a class). Don't you think the weapon and armor proficiencies would have been included in the "Aasimars as Characters" descriptive text, if that was to be intended?

Here's a question that argues my point: What HD does an Aasimar Wizard get?

[EDIT:] I just found this text that begins the glossary section of the MM on page 305:

This chapter provides definitions and descriptions of monster characteristics.

Bold is mine. So the glossary describes monsters, not characters. I'm afraid Aasimar characters are not proficient with said weapons and armor.

I submit that one must take a racial HD of Outsider to gain these. Ha!

I'm confused... They are listed as Outsiders, right? And the entry itself even lists the differences between normal outsiders and native outsiders (if you look at the last line for example), right? Those proficiencies are listed under "Traits:" where it specifically says that they all have them unless otherwise noted in their entry. I've been looking and I haven't found an Aasimar entry in any book that specifically states they don't get it (Planar Handbook, FR, MM, etc). The HD and stuff is above that with "Features:" that they only get if they have no class levels or whatever... right?

I believe that this clears up your question: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20060731a

But you won't want to be an aasimar anyways, the level adjustment will always make your spellcasting a level below max capacity (it just plain isn't worth it). Unless you are playing with a LA buyoff variant go with a LA +0 race. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=697653)

He makes a great point and obviously knows what he is talking about. If you take his advice about using an LA 0, I'll go ahead and throw my vote back in for Underfolk... (Nice plug for your thread btw AZNsupermarket).

D4, But it gets the proficiencies, no d8, no bab, no saves. so an aasimaar wizard can run in a chain shirt, carry a rapier with no penalty. but those are the only differences between that and a human wizard. the D8 is optional racial hit dice, all you need for the proficiencies is the type. if buyoff is approved, do it at level 3 (minimum level to do it for L.A.+1 creatures)

thye don't need a racial H.D. for the proficiencies, Only the outsider type. it vaguley references that in the MM1, (pretty close in page)

Yeah, I was asking more rhetorically because other posters' claims did not seem to add up.

Well, I created the list so when people ask these sort of questions, I can just tell them to look at the list and figure it out themselves.

When dealing with issues of ambiguity it is best to consult your DM. We won't matter worth a spit if your DM already have a resolution.

I still contend that one needs a racial HD of Outsider to gain the abilities you're talking about.

But as I posted earlier, wotc has officially said that you don't need racial HD to gain these abilities: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20060731a

 As if. The OP is clearly describing a human who took a proficiency feat with his bonus feat. Elves don't get "a" proficiency. They get multiple proficiencies. Duh :P

Neraphim from Manual of the Planes are outsiders with LA 0 and a racial bonus to NA. Just don't expect to win any beauty pageants... well, human ones at least.
