Can a Half-Giant become a warhulk?

If not, Is there any other Large or larger creature with ECL9 (10 or lower if has a BAB of 5+) or lower with high Str that makes a good Warhulk?

Can a Half-Giant become a warhulk?No, a Half-Giant is not of Large size.

Ogre and Centaur are both ECL 6 with 4 racial HD an a +2 LA. I can't call to mind any lower ECL large creatures, though I'm sure there are some... I think maybe Half-Ogre (RoD) was?

Check out the Races of Stone Goliath Im not sure of the specs, but his powerful built will make the goliath a large size creature of medium height.

No it doesn't. Powerful Build allows Goliaths to use Lage weapons without penalty, and gives them a bonus in grapples, bull rush attempts and trips. It does not make him/her a large sized creature. There is a huge difference.

Apparently, Powerful Build, Does qualify them. Goliath and Half-Giant are supposed to be viable race choices for entering Hulking Hurler and War Hulk. Just ask the folks at the Char Op boards, and I'm sure they can point you to an official ruling.

I, myself, agree that Powerful Build =/= Large size.

No where does it say you can qualify to prcs that are "Large only"

Powerful Build: The physical stature of half-giants lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger.

Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him.

A half-giant is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A half-giant can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

Now I am going throw out a question to you, the thread starter.

How would you like to play the HULK?

Because if you select the Goliath and than take Barbarian 1 coupled with the Goliath-Barbarian Racial Class ability to become large when you rage, you can basically be the HULK.

And I agree that "Large size" and "Powerful Build" are not the same thing for qualifying for feats/PrC's, etc.

This is to what the CharOpers are referring.

Powerful Build by itself does not qualify a character as Large for class requirements.

Lol. Goliath Barbarian/Frenzied Beserker/War hulk. When you Frenzy or Rage you turn big gaining +20 Str. + Str from Frenzy/Rage. That be sweet.

Actually, Goliaths DO qualify for some Large-only material. If you check Races of Stone for the feats "Fling Ally", "Fling Enemy", "Knockback", "Rampaging Bull Rush", "Rock Hurling", or "Improved Rock Hurling", you'll see an interesting line:

"Prerequisites: ..., size Large or larger (goliaths qualify by virtue of their powerful build racial trait)"

Now, what does that actually mean? Every feat in Races of Stone that requires Large or larger size also states that goliaths qualify. Normally I would just say "okay" and move on, but these feats don't just say goliaths qualify, they explain WHY goliaths qualify. Apparently, their powerful build racial trait makes them qualify as Large!

The powerful build entry in the goliath's racial traits may not contradict this, but it makes absolutely no inferences that it should be the case. Looking at powerful build, it reads to me as an exclusive list of advantages, where qualifying for feats and prestige classes is not included. Since feats (in my mind) carry less determinative weight in resolving a rules schism (even though so many feats agree on the same point), I would just say that the feats are an exception, and powerful build does not qualify a creature for a larger category prerequisite.

That said, would being temporarily Large, such as under the influence of the Enlarge spell or the Mountain Rage class ability, qualify? Of course, if it did qualify, then any medium humanoid would qualify for War Hulk, since any medium humanoid can be Enlarged. On the other hand, the advantages of the feat or prestige class would only be available WHILE Large size, because only then would the prerequisites be met.

I would typically see warhulk as a viable prc to take in epic (where its lack of bab advancement is actually a boon, not a hindrance), but not before.

Maybe consider a half-ogre cleric/warhulk build (for divine power).:)

Actually, Goliaths DO qualify for some Large-only material.I see where you're going with this, but it's been decided long ago that they don't, and I'm going to tell you why...

Apparently, their powerful build racial trait makes them qualify as Large!Correct quoting but incorrect interpretation. All that line means is that to qualify, you either have to be large or have Powerful Build. It was a VERY poor choice of wording, and I mean VERY poor, but that's what it really means. Yes, Goliaths and Half-Giants qualify for these, but that's simply by specific exception, and it doesn't mean they qualify for anything requiring Large size and not explicitly allowing having Powerful Build as a racial feature as an alternative. What they SHOULD have done to make it clear was to have it be...

"Prerequisites: ..., size Large or larger or size Medium with the Powerful Build racial feature."

The powerful build entry in the goliath's racial traits may not contradict this, but it makes absolutely no inferences that it should be the case. Looking at powerful build, it reads to me as an exclusive list of advantages, where qualifying for feats and prestige classes is not included. Since feats (in my mind) carry less determinative weight in resolving a rules schism (even though so many feats agree on the same point), I would just say that the feats are an exception, and powerful build does not qualify a creature for a larger category prerequisite.Which is correct... Wait... Did you just refute yoru own point? Then why did you bring it up?

That said, would being temporarily Large, such as under the influence of the Enlarge spell or the Mountain Rage class ability, qualify? Of course, if it did qualify, then any medium humanoid would qualify for War Hulk, since any medium humanoid can be Enlarged. On the other hand, the advantages of the feat or prestige class would only be available WHILE Large size, because only then would the prerequisites be met.Technically, yes, using the CWarrior (iirc?) clarifications for prestige class prerequisites, that would allow qualification, but again, a character would lose the prestige class features while not qualifying.

Not to turn this into a Pow. Build thread, but they say " ...(goliaths qualify because of their powerful build." is augmenting the word in fron of it, parenthesis were invented to do that. if they had wanted large size and goliaths, it would be listed as "Large size or Large, or Goliath" instead of that, they stuck an amendment onto the end of 'Large or Larger".
thats my two cents, and i am not RAW, just a person who can speak/read/interpret the english language. Sure you can say "if you want it like that, house rule it." but instead, i stick to RAW, despite my beliefs.

It is a powerful build not an enlarge spell there is fundamental difference. It qualifies the medium sized goliath to act as a Large is creature for the fact of most feats and weapons. If you look at the War Hulk prestige class most of the feats are for large size characters thats the premise I was going on I did not have the stats of the Goliath with me at the time of posting. And it is a weak argument between powerful build and enlarge. Unless the enlarge spell was permanent in which im not sure yo are able to do.

Did you just refute yoru own point? Then why did you bring it up? ...because I think there's some uncertainly with this - as I put it - "schism" in the rules. I do still hold the opinion that you also hold; I'm just not so bold as to state that it's a definitive truth. I think the rules were poorly enough worded as to leave it up to DM interpretation to decide. And it is a weak argument between powerful build and enlarge. That said, would being temporarily Large, such as under the influence of the Enlarge spell or the Mountain Rage class ability, qualify? (bold added) I wasn't trying to connect the two ideas. Sorry for the confusion.

From the FAQ.

"Does the powerful build racial trait allow a character to take advantage of feats for size Large or larger creatures, such as Awesome Blow? Would a half-dragon goliath qualify as Large for determining whether it has wings?

No and no. The powerful build racial trait (found in the goliath entry in Races of Stone and the half-giant entry in Expanded Psionics Handbook) spells out exactly when the character is treated as one size larger than normal:
1) Whenever subjected to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check. This includes grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts.
2) When determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size can affect him. This includes improved grab and swallow whole.
3) When determining what size of weapons the character can use. That’s it. The character isn’t treated as one size larger when determining space, reach, Hide check penalty, or for the purpose of qualifying for anything that requires size. Some feats, prestige classes, or other game elements may specifically allow a Medium character with powerful build to qualify as if he were Large. Such examples are specific and intentional exceptions to the normal rule."

Emphasis mine. Powerful build does not qualify.

The FAQ is so bloated that I find it difficult to accept at face value. Seems the FAQ author agrees with me, though. That's not bad.

Does it mention being temporarily Large?

I should certainly hope that you are not Rules As Written.

That would be such a dreadful existence! :)
