So, I was working on a campaign and the origin of the races was going to be that the first god create the other gods, universe, and proto-humanoids. Then the lower gods, like Corellon Larethian, were allowed to mold these beings into the various races, like elves, dwarfs etc... Each Greater deity was given an equal share.

So, the plan was one of the gods most likely Boccob never altered his share and thus they remain proto-humanoids. They will have formed a small kingdom far from the main cultures. In the first Campaign the PCs won't have the option to play as one. But, any other Campaign will give them the option.

They would be a medium race w/o any attribute adjustments or special abilities. Basically, the description would say medium, base land speed 30. Would this balance out a proto-humanoid having a -1 LA? So, a ECL 1 proto fighter would have two fighter levels. Depending on what the feelings on the board are I might make the base land speed 20, make them sleep for 12 hours and/or give them no favored class or I might just scrap the idea entirely.

Unintended Consequence of this idea: Spellcasters with free spellcaster levels.

Bad idea, unfortunately. One level of class features is huge when you get into the scaling of high-level magic users. Negative LA just gives too much in exchange.

Blast, thats what I get for not thinking my plans through. This would be a overpowered race for spellcasters. And I guess it would be cheap to say their heritage makes them feel magic, arcane and divine with less clarity thus -1 caster level. Well I guess its back to the drawing board for the proto-humanoids.
Thanks for the input.

Hey, at least you came by to ask. The bickering and such can be rather wearying, but one handy thing about these forums is many minds looking for different things and seeing different potential problems before they can up and smash a game.

Yeah, I usually play melee or stealth characters so thats where I was coming from working on this race. I know the magic system well enough but the only magic users I have taken past level 12 has been a duskblade and rangers and they aren't exactly the most magically focused. So, I was thinking that the race wouldn't break melee or stealth characters to bad, especially if I tweaked it with some more restrictions. But, free spell caster level would be difficult to balance without making it unplayable for other classes.
