i know lusts would be lustful , greeds would have hoards rivaling dragons , and envy's would be green ????

09-17-07, 06:21 PM If we're just picking monsters based on them, then Lust would be the Succubus. Wrath would be something like the vampire. Pride would be the rakshasha or the mind flayer.

Lust :
succubi/Nymph like.

Gluttony :
Nowadays it is called "Substance abuse ",so a creature with low will saves,pale, with an almost undead looks will do.

Greed :
Humans,Dwarfs and old D&D Dragons.

Sloth :
As they don't like to do anything, heavy penalties to Constitution,and attack rolls.

Wrath :
Half-orc,angry barbarian like.

Envy :
Highschool girls, think of people who want to take off, or destroy anything you have and they don't.I would say Int bonus, and heavy Wis penalty.

Pride :
Demons,Fallen Angels, anything that is punished because of their pride.

That was also my first thought, but I decided to choose only creatures presented in MM1 (Famine Spirit (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mm2_gallery/88268_620_48.jpg) is from MM2), and creatures that have different types (although at first that was a coincidence).

Find some template to give it a Swallow Whole ability, plus an increase in size, and it would be perfect.

09-18-07, 04:19 PM Okay, here is my list of what they would be if we are just choosing monsters from the Monster Manual and giving them a sin to call their own.

Lust: Probably going to go with the Succubus for this one, she is the classic example of evil lust incarnate so she get it. But if we want to go for something a little more odd then what everyone expects why not go for the Harpy. She spends her time luring unsuspecting males to their doom, but not before having her way with them. She seems to fit quite nicely. Also it should be noted that Satyr deserves and honorable mention in this, but the nymph probably doesnt. The nymph is usually fairly chase and only selects the most beautiful and kind hearted of individuals, she doesnt sleep with everything that moves.

Gluttony: As was said the Barghest is a great choice, but what about the Tarrasque or the Bulette? Those two creatures exist for no reason other than to eat, but if we are going for an intelligent creature that is well capable of knowing what it does is wrong but doesnt care then the Barghest gets it. The ghoul falls into this category as well, especially seeing as how they gained their form due to eating people.

Greed: The Red Dragon is the first thing that pops into my mind when I think of the iconic monster for greed. Then again they possess many of the sins so we should probably look beyond them for something else. Such as the goblinoids, they're whole existence is spent trying to get what other people have. They may not be the most horrifying creature out there, but there is no question that they would go to any length to gain as much treasure as possible, if for no other reason then to have it.

Sloth: Big T and many dragons qualify for this one, if for only because they spend so much time asleep. But if we look at sloth as a sin we see it refers to not only physical laziness, but the lack of achieving all that one is capable of. In this end the only monster that I can really justify giving this one to is the Ogre. If we think about it all they really do is bully other races into doing things for them, they even let their natural size do the bullying for them! Very few apply themselves to anything in earnest and most expect it all to be given to them. In my eyes they earn the role of sloth.

Wrath: Ah, many, many, many creatures fall into this category. The notable Balor comes to mind, a being of pure malice and hatred for all things living. The Orc for its mindless anger to all others besides itself. The wight given an existence by fate and using it to crush the flame of life that it so despises. Basically all you have to do is flip through the monster manual and you will find reason enough to give any creature this one, but if I had to choose one exemplar for this trait it would be the Beholder. The Beholder is such a complex being, and it uses all of that complexity as an excuse to hate all other creatures that are not it (it would still probably hate itself once the others were gone). It hates all other races for being weaker than it, it hates creatures stronger then it for being that way, it hates other beholders for not being itself, and it hates itself for not being as perfect as the Great Mother. Heck, it probably even hates the Great Mother for being perfect! If there is another creature that deserves this title more I have yet to see it.

Envy: More then any other sin, Dragons are exemplars of this sin. While it may be said that it is greed that drives them to collect hoards of goods, that is not the whole truth. The main driving force to collect vast hoards of gold is so that other dragons will not have it. They constantly scheme and plot on how to gain other hoards from other creatures, seeking to placate their jealousy, that is until they find another creature with something that they dont have. Then they go to great lengths to obtain it. They are beings of such great envy that they dont even worship their gods out of true devotion, they do it more out of hopes that someday they too can aspire to their heights of glory and have all others look upon them with envy.

Pride: There are actually a small number of creatures that truly deserve this spot. The list that I can think of includes dragons, mind flayers, and yuan-ti. The reasons for all of these should be obvious, but the one I am going to have to choose is the mind flayer. Why the Mind Flayer, because mostly the Dragon, as I described already has a spot in envy, and the Yuan-Ti dont take an active enough role as would be rulers of the world. Mind Flayers on the other hand, as a rule, always assume they are superior to anything else out there. Other races exist only to feed its hunger, not to mention their very method of reproduction involves 'improving' a different type of creature into the perfect form of a mind flayer. Not to mention almost all of their schemes involve the conquering of the multi-verse and enslaving all the races therein. As an interesting side note, both the Githyanki and the Githzerai were created do to the extreme belief that one idea was superior to the others, and to this day that pride keeps them separate.

Thats my take on the seven deadly sins and the races that should exemplify them. I am more then open to any discussion on contrary thoughts about my choices.

That's what I probably like about this thread: there's no right answer, only suggestions (some better than the others).

Some of the sins are definitely easier than others; some sins lack candidates, some sins have too many of them, and some monsters have many dominant sins to choose from.

Since dragons seem to be a good candidate for many sins, how about choosing the 7 sins only from the dragons? (searching Draconomicon...)
