racial hit dice and level adjustment [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-15-07, 04:58 PM I was wondering do all races that have a level adjustment of +1 or higher, also have atleast 1 racial hit dice.

such as a drow has level adjustment +2 , racial hit dice 1d8....

or a catfolk +1 , racial hit dice 1d8?

This does not seem right but this has been the rules we have been using in our games lately. and i dont know it dosent sound right.

08-15-07, 05:01 PM It's not right, no. Drow and Catfolk have only a level adjustment and no racial hit dice.

The sample monster entries typically give a character 1 level of an NPC class (usually warrior); that's where the d8 comes from.

08-15-07, 05:05 PM Also, It will say if the creature has racial hit dice when it gives the stats for playing one. Such as a Centaur.

08-15-07, 07:19 PM If a playable race is shown with only 1 HD, that HD is replaced by the character's first level in a class.

08-16-07, 09:33 AM All races have racial HD. However, as Crimson_Concerto said, if that race has only 1 racial HD, you can replace it with your first class level.
