I have a bit of a strange question to ask. it does not take the form of aid for my character or dming ability or any such thing, but I would like to know the opinions of people about the race presented in races of the wild, Raptorans.

I like them personally, but i would love to hear the different viewpoints about this race that I've heard from others to be "massively overpowered"

Their are so many ways to gain flight (wildshaping, alter self, polymorph, various spells, class abilities, etcetera) that their ability to flight for increasingly longer periods of time over a number of levels isn't very over-powered at all.

Also, beyond flight, all of the other of the raptoran's racial abilities are pretty boring.

A lot of people can't stand them(myself included) but I have yet to hear one of us who can give a reason beyond "That is just stupid, not in my DND".

So maybe we are wrong, but I am not a fan.

I have to say I still haven't really read that chapter of RoW. But I still like them because the pictures look good and make them look interesting. :D

I don't know where you've heard they were massively overpowered, but I must protest. My players have played them quite a few times, and their flight has never thrown them off the power curve. Anecdotal evidence, I know, but it's there if it's worth anything to you...

I love the rules for them (very balanced flight, in my opinion) but the whole angel-appearance thing turned me off. Instead, I use their rules (albeit with a slight ability adjustment) to represent an aven-style race. Birdmen!

But I do love the rules, and I think the fluff presented in the races books is top-notch, I just don't like people-with-wings.

It's true. Raptorans are definitely not overpowered. I have played one once, just for fun. I meant to only run around healing my party, I was a Cleric 1/Healer 3 about to prestige into a RSoP. I was hoping that the flight would help me avoid AoOs, so that I could do absolutely nothing but heal. I figure they can be good for certain storylines, character concepts, etc. But I have to agree with what others have already made plain... they're not overpowered, at all.

I played one in our last campaign, and i think they are great! Not to say they are overpowerede, but dont everybody want to fly? :D I played a cleric swoping around having buffed himself sending plunging shot after shot down on the silly spikelings and their rhinoceros, on the enemies that could not hit me because entreopic ward and illuminous armor, shouting my characters weird accent as he just recently learned to speak common, and just before the rest of the party died I saved the last member, a hobbit by flying down grabbing him from the bush, and simply flying away.

I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty disappointed, and for 2 reasons. One is the fact that they're just nothing spectacular except for flight, and the other is that when I saw "raptorans" in the Table of contents, I instantly thought of the velociraptor rather than the birds of prey. Actually, that would be a pretty cool idea. Anybody wanna stat them out with me?

Edit: I started a thread on Half-Dinosaurs in the Monster's Lair forum, so it can be a template, not to mention more versatile than just velociraptors. check it out!
