As I GM, I wield the powers of my bastardized hombrew campaign setting of metagaming delight (+4). Basically anything and everything can and will be found in it at some point. Having just picked up races of the wild, destiny, and stone, I was eager to include the Raptoran race quite prominently. I felt it would offer a great alternative to the LA+3 Avariel ripped from the pages of the FRCS. After reviewing the race though I found myself oddly dissapointed. The race seems to lack a certain power... or balance. According to RoTW it takes 4 class levels to even be able to use flight. Well that's fine, but the level caveat placed on this racial feature and other restrictions placed on its use are heavy until you've passed 10 class levels. In addition they really gain no greater benefits other than flight, thier skills and such are not overpowered when compared with other races who gain special features without gaining a Level Adjustment. So I'm looking for solutions, personally I already have a route in mind, and I'm just looking for feedback on it. Ok, Dex +2, uhhh since they can fly they must have hollow bones, hollow bones would mean better movement. Con -2, yeah again hollow bones, hollow bones and lighter body means that it is more frail. I'm not looking to seriously overpower the class here, I'm just thinking that a race such as this should have certain bonuses and penalties to abilites due to thier physical makeup. I was considering simply making them a race with an LA of +1, but I really couldn't come up with a suitable way to do that, since they are slightly powerful for a race with LA +0, but even with the ability score increases would be weak for a +1 LA race. Anyway I could really use some help on this one ASAP, I have a player who is awaiting my ruling on the Racial abilites of a Raptoran character in an upcoming campaign. Thanks people! |

I am planning on putting them in my next homebrew because I like tribal societies and I think they have an interesting view on life. As for not the racial abilities, their main ability is to glide, then fly. They get some bonuses to skills, +10 to jump, so all in all I like them as they are. The only thing I really don't like are the lame foot-weapons. That and I'd like to change their look a little, I think they look kinda silly in some of the art. Put back in the substitution levels Sam Wood does the art work and I think they look amazing. |
