If you want to play an LA+1 race, but are starting in a 1st level campaign, couldn't you start as an adept, aristocrat, expert, or warrior? Just for first level to negate the level adjustment, starting at 0 exp and all? It makes sense to me.

I'm looking for official rulings here, but opinions are welcome as long as you admit them as opinions.

Depending on your choice of race (quite a number of LA+1 races are notorious for being very weak, they are only LA+1 because the designers deemed them too strong to be had at LA+0), it may be possible to allow the race as LA+0, at the expense of your 1st lv starting feat.

Hobgoblin, as well as the various LA+1 planetouched would be notorious offenders here.

Yeah, you could probably get away with, not taking an NPC class, but rather just using a 1 racial hit dice you'd normally drop in order to take a class level.

It really depends... what LA +1 race are you using?

Sure, if you like having no HP, saves, proficiencies, skill points, or...what?

Actually, a Gnoll is LA +1. You'd get 2 racial HD.

Wait, that's ECL 3...

Nevermind.

according to the Unearthed Arcana its ok the drop the +1 LA at 3rd level. As mentioned before, just take a racial hit die for first level, Character hit die for second and when you reach third and pick up a second character level you can also trade inthe racial hit die for a character level. Or just be ECL 2 for a bit while the rest of the party catches up. Either way is legal.

The way me and my players do it is you start play as your intended race and class. So for example if you wanna play a hobgoblin fighter, you would begin play as just that, but when you would gain your first level, ignore the exp and level, so you are an ECL 2, and your other players are level 2... you may start out a little bit stronger but you will equal out after 2nd level...

Sorry folks, I should have been more specific.

Let's say that the rest of the party is starting out as 1st level players handbook races with elite scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8). You want to play a hobgoblin or planetouched (or whatever LA+1 race). Instead of being considered 2nd level with a pc class, why not just start off as 1st level and no exp with a weaker class (adept, aristocrat, expert, warrior).

So, the guy wanting to play a hobgoblin fighter could just be a warrior at 1st level and be on par with the rest of the party. A tiefling rogue would be an expert at 1st, and an aasimar wanting a cleric could be an aristocrat or an adept (at 1st). Then at 2nd they could start taking normal pc classes as usual.

My whole point being that if you play a somewhat weaker class for a level, then you can play a somewhat stronger race. In the long run, I think a hobgoblin War1/Ftr19 is pretty much on par with say, a Human Ftr 20.

If, like you said, your only looking for oficall rulings on your idea, then , well, i think you already know the answer.

No, that does not, oficially, work. A character with a lvl in any class, even an npc one, and a +1 LA has an ECL of 2
