Savage Species introduced rituals that allow a creature to permanently change itself, including changing its species. Well, my question is: What about becoming a race with no ECL (effective character level), like a standard race that has no ECL without character levels added. The book bases all the costs and time on the goal creature's ECL. I guess you would treat the ECL as a 1 for ritual purposes, but what about where you have to give up XP or levels for the change. I don't think you should have to give up a level or the equivalent XP when the new race doesn't change your ECL (like going from human to dwarf). I'm going to discuss it with my group and get their opinions, but I wanted to put it out here and see what other people think.

Flip to Savage Species pg 151, right side under "Example: Ritual Transformation that Decreases ECL."

Using the Ritual of Vitality to become a +0 LA (ECL 1) creature would only result in 1000xp loss.
