| ragoftag03-26-07, 10:24 PM | Campaign race from stories I have written (mercifully, never published) that I want to make available to play. Of course, they're perfect, as is, but I would like a touch of polish...hehe Rulik Wandering the vast plateau south of Mahoud of the world are a Centaur-like race known as the Rulik. Smaller than other ‘centaur’ races, the Rulik are still quite physical and mobile, if much less rugged individually as a race. Rulik ‘Kopas’, or tribes, can easily run into the high hundreds of warriors with double that many noncombatants. Tight cooperation and an overwhelming sense of the whole mean that Kopas are near Stalinist in their communal life. The Rulik Kopas are less cooperative amongst each other, raiding, cheating and constantly jockeying for status. Nominally non-lethal, the rivalry is staggeringly physical and dangerous. Games are just short of homicidal and the timid are to be scorned. Interestingly, prowess in these inter-Kopas conflicts is one of the few, excepted, forms of individuality approved in Rulik society. Even then, a Rulik would never boast of personal achievements, rather other Rulik would proclaim deeds to any outsiders. Other Rulik would be expected to know already. Only the fact that most Rulik are virtuous and noble keeps them from being insufferable. Honor is foremost in the average Rulik’s life, followed by duty to Kopas and a level of personal self patience and resolution that rivals an Elf's. Indeed, the Rulik unflappability has spread beyond the High Plateau. Rulik seem massive at first, with most of them being about 7' feet tall, they dwarf most civilized races with the size of their lower bodies, but most run under 400 pounds as adults. Their lower bodies most closely resemble some form of powerful goat, with their broad cloven hooves and thick coats. upper bodies are much shorter than one would expect from a 'centaur', literally ribcage and up. Rulik are not as fast as horses, although their maneuverability is vastly superior. Most Rulik have fur over much of their bodies, lengthening over the legs and dorsal centerline. For most, this is a brown in a wide range of shades, but can run the gamut between a mahogany brown to sand, short to long, smooth to shaggy and downy to coarse, depending on age, how cold the region or even diet. All these can change over even short periods of time. All wear their ‘manes’ long, braiding and decorating them in highly individualized ways. Rare Rulik sport actual patterns in their coats, usually gradations of color lightening towards the belly, but notably faint striping or spotting over the back. Even Rulik without such patterns practice f’Tejii, or paint-and-dye, to decorate their coats. Rulik upper torsos best resemble powerfully built humans with incredibly dominant noses and large eyes. Rulik are often viewed with contempt by the less civilized peoples due to their rigid social structure and selflessness, but respected due to their honor and fighting ability. The more civilized races see their oppressive culture as repressive, failing to realize the harsh world of the High Plateau demands no less. Nomadic, Rulik ‘own’ no more than can be carried, leading others to think them more primitive than they are. The rare Rulik who leaves the Kopas to travel the world is a curiosity to most and is accepted in most places. Wandering Rulik tend toward neutrality concerning Law and Chaos, as opposed to the rigidly lawful Rulik life they left behind. Evil Rulik are not unknown, but all are exceedingly rare outcasts. Rulik roam the vast plains of the High Plateau, south of the Mahoud and often visit and trade with the established border cities of the area. It is believed that their territory ranges from the Roof of the world to the Far Sea. No organized entity exists, as Rulik rely mostly on their tribal system of government. They share the plateau with other creatures in varying accords. Many Rulik Kopas concern themselves little with religion, although most see a form of nature-worship and Druidism as prudent. Several Nature gods do rate observances, but no organized structures exist among the Rulik. Cuthbert picks Paladins from the Rulik with regularity, and an order known as the Cuthbert Rilatik, roughly ’the horsemen of the Judge’, mediates blood disputes between Kopas. Rulik who adventure tend to be the more individualistic, those who just don't feel accepted and others that don’t fit in. All are struck with a wanderlust and a disproportionately high number of these Rulik become adventurers. Capable combatants and solid allies, such Rulik are welcomed into most companies. Racial Qualities: * +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity: -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma. The rustic Rulik are big and strong, but perhaps a bit too imposing and awkward for most folks. They are a bit clumsy in a world of bipedal creatures. * Rulik suffer a -1 to AC if wearing medium armor or at medium encumbrance. This increases to -2 at Heavy. Rulik fighters reduce the penalty by one. * Large Size: Rulik are Large, but with certain exceptions, while they still gain the -1 to Attack and Armor Class, they do not gain reach, nor can they wield weapons as Large Creatures, though they have all other benefits and penalties that come along with large size. * Monstrous Humanoid: Rulik are Monstrous Humanoids. * Equipment Considerations: Although Rulik are large creatures, their upper torsos are those of a medium-sized humanoid, meaning they can wear head, shoulder, neck, chest, wrist, hand and waist items of medium size. A Rulik can wear robes and vestments, but cannot wear a suit of armor fashioned for a medium-sized humanoid (since a centaur has a very different lower body). A rulik uses weapons scaled for a medium-sized creature even though it is technically a large creature. Full armor for a rulik costs five times the amount the same type of armor could cost for a medium-sized humanoid creature, and weighs three times as much. Rulik can't wear normal magic boots or horseshoes, but custom versions can be made however. * Rulik base land speed is 30'. Rulik start with the Run feat. * Rulik have a -10 circumstance penalty to Climb checks, and may not make Ride checks. * Senses: Rulik have superior vision, in some ways, having low light vision and gaining a +4 racial bonus to Spot checks in daylight, but are unable to distinguish color in the dark. They suffer a -2 to all night spot checks and a -5 to any save affecting vision. They often take the feat Blindsight. * Mounted Combat: A centaur qualifies for the feats of Ride-By Attack, Spirited Charge and Trample, as if the centaur had the Mounted Combat feat, and as if the centaur were "mounted" for purposes of performing these feats. * Quadruped: As a Quadruped, Rulik have a +4 Bonus to resist Bull Rush and Trip attacks. They have a carrying capacity of 1-1/2 times greater than normal for their strength. They must wear barding instead of normal armor and they cannot wear boots designed for humanoids and may not wear normal style horseshoes. Their cloven hooves and vision allow them a +4 to all balance check as long as they gain the vision bonus. * Mounted: Rulik are always considered mounted and are never required to take ride checks, additionally they are not required to take Mounted Combat as a prerequisite to any feat. Although they do not take penalties to attack for firing or attacking while mounted, Rulik do not gain the usual bonus to attack for being mounted. * Weapon Familiarity: Rulik do not start with any weapon training, but gain the WEAPON GROUP (Rulik), if they are able to select any weapon group, as their first choice. Replace light crossbow in their simple weapons with bow. * Removed 'Imposing', Ruliks may be big and a bit rustic, but are not belligerent or rude. * Natural Weapons: When making a full attack, a centaur may make its regular attacks with a melee weapon, and then make two hoof attacks. These attacks use the centaur's base attack -4 to hit, and do 1d6 points of bludgeoning damage, with only half Strength bonus (rounded down) applied to damage. maybe a feat for ftrs? |

Do they still need to take ranks in Ride to qualify for mounted feats? Otherwise, it's a weak LA +1. I think you could make it solid LA +1 by removing the weapon size restriction. Also, why can't they use Ride? You could conceivably strap a centaur onto a war elephant and have it guide it and everything. |

Actually, I was trying to get them down to a +0 like a recent entry by someone else. He solved so many mechanical problems I nearly whooped for joy. Then I pulled these up and started a mean update. Unfortunately, I didn't get the whole entry saved, but his Centaurs are much nicer than the Rulik, seeing themselves as peacemakers. Rulik are more primitive and awful edgy. Some of the mechanical entries are suggested by old players who read the original stories but don't play D20, so their advice is suspect (Oooo, I hope none are reading this!). Hoof damage is too high in my eyes, and I wanted to make it a racial feat, but was overruled. The 'Senses' entry is a particularly rewritten part, and no one seemed to believe that 'Monstrous Humanoid' is in any way better than 'Humanoid". There should also be a note that they have a rather short lower body than prevents a normal carry load as a Quadruped. And they are weak craftsmen, generally over sized or heavier than normal. And thanks for the help so far, I'm supposed to get fed for this Saturday! |
| obrysii03-28-07, 09:52 PM | obrysii Er, could you elaborate? What is a better Flavortext format? Put spaces in between paragraphs. That's the best way to format things on a message board, as message boards do not easily allow indentation. |

The 'Senses' entry is a particularly rewritten part, and no one seemed to believe that 'Monstrous Humanoid' is in any way better than 'Humanoid". What? You cared what other people thought about something that you had made? Shame! :D Okay, Monstrous Humanoid is actually a bonus, many spells do not affect them. It's about on par with elvish sleep and paralysis immunity. You really want a LA +0 centaur race? Okay, make them Large (Long), as it's like Powerful Build but with all the penalties. There's no problem with that because they get about +1 damage per attack but suffer -1 to attack rolls and AC (unless you really need the penalties to fit other abilities in), and the other bonuses for size are just another trait. Just give them a flat 30' base land speed and Run as a bonus feat to represent their speed. Don't bother with natural attacks, their increased size already gives them good damage. Aaand... That's it. You can probably fit a small racial skill bonus in there and keep it balanced. |
| ragoftag03-31-07, 11:03 PM | Thomar_of_Uointer What? You cared what other people thought about something that you had made? Shame! Ya, the cook tonight read the originals decades back and demands 'authenticity' in exchange for fajitas. I am slave to the belly beast. |
