If I have a Satyr and 100,000 xp, how many class levels can it take?

check out the table in the PHB.... then subtract the ECL of the satyr

EDIT: yeah sorry that was a bad day for me. :(

That is not really helping. Satyr's are LA +2 and 5 HD. I see that their ECL could be 2 or 4. So I am confused.:weep:

La 2 and 5HD = 7th level character

Think of it this way. The 5HD that a Satyr has is like having 5 levels in a "Satyr Class." So, just by HD, the Satyr would have 5 levels. The Satyr also has a level adjustment of +2.

5+2 = 7

So, a Satyr is effectively a 7th level character.

Now, look in the Player's Handbook. What level would a normal character be at with 100,000 experience?

I'm not allowed to state that information because I believe it violates the terms of service. Do the math and figure how many levels the Satyr would be able to take after already being 7th level.

Ask you're DM if you have to take racial hitdice

If not- you are lvl 12 of any class of you're choice -ecl 14 with +2 la

If so- you have 5 racial hitdice, and 7 levels you're choice- ecl 14 with +2 la

lvl14- 91,000

100,000- you are here
lvl 15-105,000

Thanks, yeah that was what I was looking for/thought. Sorry I did not intend for you to give me the levels in the sense of the brackets I have those. I was a little confused on the HD and LA issue. I knew they counted as levels. I was not sure how to calculate it.

I can take 5 class levels if I have to take into account HD and LA.

OR

I can take 7 class levels if I have to take into account just HD.

OR

I can take 12 class levels if I have to take into account just LA.

Is there a precedence for just using LA?

Personally I'd beg your DM to make a toned down satyr. ECL 7 for what they have is horrible (notice they're CR 2 or 4). And it all depends on the pipes too. They're extremely underpowered for a PC, but they should be awesome.

If you have the savage species book it goes into great detail about ECL and LA's Its kinda complex how it works, but it makes alot of sense...

There is no official precedence for using "just LA". The game takes into account racial hit die and LA when calculating ECL.

It is an extremely stupid scenario in cases where the ECL of a creature is much higher than it's CR.

A satyr is ECL 7, CR 2 or 4.

What you need to figure out is what portions of "Satyr" do you need and go from there.

Racial traits:
1) +2 dex, con, int, wis, cha (everything but str)
2) 40 Base speed
3) Low-light vision
4) +4 natural armor
5) Natural Weapon: headbutt (1d6)
6) Special attack: pipes
7) Special qualities: DR 5/cold iron
8) Alertness
9) +4 hide, listen, move silently, perform, and spot
10) Fey type

According to the ECL calculator (in my sig) all of this is a +4.4 LA without the hit dice. If you add 5 hit dice, the LA drops to +2 (ECL 7.1).

This means if you really want to you can play a satyr without the hit dice as if they have a LA of +4.

But guess what. If you drop the pipes it goes to +3.4 LA, If you drop the natural armor it goes to +2.6. If you drop the completely ludicrous stats you get down to 1.9. Drop DR and reduce the skill benefits to +2 instead of +4 and you have an ECL 1 creature.

That means that this:

Fey type
40 Base speed
Low-light vision
Natural Weapon: headbutt (1d6)
Alertness
+2 hide, listen, move silently, perform, and spot

is LA +0.1, as playable as any other race and it is still a "satyr". If you want to make it a bard with 25 point buy (that's the point buy equivalent of the satyr), a chain shirt (+4 armor), and a spell/feat of damage reduction 5/cold iron, and you've basically got a standard satyr.

Consequently, I used just such a method for my satyr in my campaign (with modifications) and for nymphs as well. The races were really well-balanced, but nobody wanted to play one. . .

Wouldn't he be ECL 8 when you factor in his first class lvl?

Wouldn't he be ECL 8 when you factor in his first class lvl?

Which part?

I mean, yes it would obviously be ECL 8 when you factored in his first class level, but that's what it means to be ECL 7 with 5 hit dice and 2 LA.

When you factor in your first class level it becomes ECL 8. . .

With his XP he could be up to 10th level class and a +4 LA for satyr abilities (using my suggested LA).

Or he could be 7th level class, 5 racial hit die, and +2 LA.
