| Elgorfo07-30-07, 07:59 PM | This is my second time on this board with the same race, There wasn’t any change in racial traits its more of the background information that got the heavy edit. They heard a rustling in the bushes and a halfling jumped out, the fighter breathed “it’s just a halfling”. -Org the thrice disemboweled Savage Halfling A vast equatorial jungle, where tiny trading posts hacked from the vegetation dot the coast, giant vines and tree roots conceal a forgotten society. Hidden desert oasis deep in the valleys and on the wind swept plains. A race that predates human civilization preserves, struggling to both maintain their ancient traditions and improve them. Personality Savage Halflings are very territorial, and they guard their families and clans closely. They are not quick to trust strangers, but they form strong bonds with outsiders who do manage to earn their trust, which is one of the many reasons that the missionaries have been successful so far. Physical Description The Savage Halflings are about the same height and weight as a normal light foot halfling with rough, hide-sewn clothing with course hair, long dirty fingernails that are not quite claws, and fanged maw behind which lurks a purplish tongue. Relations The Savage Halfling’s are very territorial, however they interact with other frequently and engage in activates such as trading and cultural exchange. As a result they often maintain good trading relations with other races such as the Yuan-ti, Desmodu, Elves, and Rakastas these trades correspond with metal and special mounts for the halflings meat and numerous spices (halfling chefs are the best on the continent). But they have rarely traded much less had contact with “civilized” cultures until recently. The savage halflings a connection with dinosaurs using them as both mounts and protectors, a halfling is bounded with its mount (usually a Venatosaurus) at birth. Tribes that include a Vastatosaurus Rex are considered blessed Alignment Savage Halfling’s tend toward chaotic alignments, they have a strong sense of loyalty to both family and clan. The Savage Halfling’s have equal potential for both good and evil so one can encounter both good and evil halfling’s’ Lands Savage Halfling’s avoid heavily populated areas, settling in deep areas of the forest, barren plains, and hidden oasis valleys. They basically settle in large mounds constructed with mud and limber with numerous entrances and exits. These “hives” are usually abuzz with activity, with the halflings doing various jobs such as “upkeep of the hive” and “organizing hunting parties”. In addition to the hives, the halflings build numerous other structures such as thatch huts and barracks the building materials tend to depend on the environment. Religion Savage Halfling’s tend toward the worship of ancestral spirits, so they tend to be very superstitious. Their already formidable respect for nature is heightened by this worship. Nonetheless they will follow any deity that promises a full stomach. Those cults that would seek to spoil nature’s natural beauty will find themselves set upon by the halfling tribes of the surrounding area. They rely on their religious leaders (barbarians/savage bards) to give them spiritual guidance these leaders can be both male and female. Savage Halfling’s have recently had an influx of missionaries and so have adopted numerous faiths. Some have quite taken to the gnome deity “The Glutton”. They are also attracted to the worship of Erythnul. One tribe has been introduced to Yondall. Reports are that they have successfully planted their first crop of maize (corn). Languages Savage Halfling’s speak a very primitive form of halfling. Those who speak halfling can quickly pick it up. They speak all the languages of the races they trade with. They use a type of sign-language when hunting or ambushing. Adventurers Savage Halfling’s may set out into the world for a variety of reasons. Tribal elders task with retrieving an artifact of Crawling Jungle origin. Often, such a quest is only the beginning of the Halfling’s adventuring career. He may be lured away from his people by the wonders of civilized society, or she may form a bond with outsiders who will never be welcome in his tribal lands. Every decade or so the elders of a tribe send out a halfling to “check on the status of the food stuffs”. They have also seen recent and successful employment as mercenaries, for even veteran soldier’s quake at the thought of crossing blades with these cannibal midgets. Savage Halflings The Savage Halflings live a much more settled life than their normal counterparts do. They prefer to build their hives along rivers and start to blaze game trails. They gather the most abundant food source in their environment, fish, wild boar, and slaves, hunting with tooth and poison-tipped weapons. Racial Traits Savage Halflings have the following racial traits. +2 Dexterity, -2 Strength, +2 wisdom Small: As a Small creature, a halfling gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks. They use smaller weapons than human’s use, and her lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character. Natural weapon: bite (1d4) Halfling base land speed is 30 feet. Thanks to their strong noses savage halflings gain a +4 bonus when tracking by scent +2 racial bonus on Climb, Hide, Jump, and Move Silently checks. Weapon Familiarity: Savage Halflings are automatically proficient with the blowgun, macuahuitl (long sword), and the throwing axe. They treat all primitive exotic weapons (from frost-burn and dragon 331) as martial weapons and are automatically proficient with all primitive weapons in the players handbook. For jungle halflings, the axe is both a practical tool and a ceremonial item. They grow up using the other weapons for hunting and warfare. Poison Use: Savage Halflings use poison extensively when hunting, and as a result never poison themselves when applying poison to a weapon or when using a poisoned weapon in combat. Savage Halflings make extensive use of poisons harvested from vermin, various types of flora and fungi, and animals, particularly those that damage Dexterity scores. +2 racial bonus on Fortitude saying throws against poison: Jungle Halflings have adapted a resistance to their own favorite method of bringing down prey. Scent (Ex): presented in the monster manual Favored Class: Barbarian. A multi-class halfling's barbarian class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multi-classing. Jungle halflings live much closer to nature, and must rely on cunning, resourcefulness, persistence, courage, and mercilessness to survive. LA+1 |
| IdleAltruism07-30-07, 09:07 PM | I'm using these in my next campaign :D You might want to look at the poison dusk lizard man from MM3 for a comparison in power. These guys seem slightly underpowered but not to bad. You're probably going to need to add a bit more to them to make them worth an LA +1. I really can't see the bite attack, halflings with fangs. As for their nature. I would make them Lawful Evil, for the tribal feel(something like aztecs, but thats just me). They have a strict social order and generally stick to it. The strongest rule. Unless they were something like chaotic evil I just don't see them being as they are, a tribal species with chaotic alignment. However if you just want them to be a tribal people true neutral works just fine. |
| SunTzuWarmaster07-30-07, 10:14 PM | I concur, they look like a +0 LA race if you take out the Wisdom bonus (which makes no sense to me). |
| Amaril07-30-07, 10:44 PM | This reminds me of the Jerren from the BoVD and the Flesheater PrC from a corresponding Dragon Magazine article. The Jerren are an evil offshoot of halflings, and the Flesheater PrC gives them claw and bite attacks. They also tend to swarm when in groups. |
| ewancummins07-30-07, 11:16 PM | Reminds me just a bit of the Athasian halflings. This isn't the same, though. |
| Amaril07-30-07, 11:19 PM | Reminds me just a bit of the Athasian halflings. This isn't the same, though. It's funny that you mention that. A friend of mine was a huge Dark Sun fan and decided to run a 3.5 Dark Sun campaign. I think he used that PrC for the halflings. |
| Elgorfo07-31-07, 04:21 PM | allow me to explain something about these halflings they are modeled after the Jerren, Kendar, Athasian halflings, and the erabon halflings but Ive made changes to them so that these guys are entirly my own. it is a fact that these are the only halflings in my campain world so thay have to fit a wide verity of of RPG niches. |
