Scalable Level Adjustment Benefits? [Archive] - Wizards Community

One of the problems with level adjustments is that they become less worthwhile as levels rise. Some methods are suggested for getting rid of level adjustments, but what about increasing racial benefits as levels rise instead? Some races already have scalable benefits, such as drow spell resistance, but others don't.

I got the idea from the celestial template, which has scaling energy resistance as hit dice increase - so why is the energy resistance of an Aasamar or Tiefling fixed? If they gained +5 energy resistance every six character levels, this would help compensate for their +1 LA at higher levels. They could also gain extra uses of their spell-like abilities, or perhaps gain new ones.

You would have to overhaul each template and race on a case-by-case basis. Scaling benefits are more powerful, so they have higher level adjustment (while aasimar and tiefling have low level adjustment). This would, in general, increase level adjustment for most templates unless you took countermeasures to prevent it.

I'd amend the race at start - some races do have scaled benefits, such as the drow. It would make LA adjusted races more playable at higher level, I think, although by RAW the LA should be calculated seperately and increase as you increase the benefit, in practice this wouldn't happen because in practice the benefit is not worth more than one level increase at higher level.
