Semi-Dead are very tough, but lack good conversational skills and strong personalities Medium: As medium creatures, Semi-Dead have no special bonuses or penalties due to size Monstrous Humanoid: Semi-Dead are not subject to spells and effects that affect humanoids only Semi-Dead base land speed is 30 feet Semi-Dead do not eat, breath, or sleep 3 times per day, a Semi-Dead may eat a fresh corpse, regaining Hit Points equal to the creature's hit dice Automatic Languages: Common, Gutter Bonus Languages: Any (Exept secret languages, such as Druidic) Level Adjusment: +0 [/sblock] I think this is the first time I've ever said this, but I need more flavor to effectively balance it. I get that they might be partially dead, but they have the monstrous humanoid type. Specifically, I need to know if they're a half-breed, a magical creations gone awry that somehow bred true (botched resurrection or animation), or what... If they're semi-dead, how does healing/inflicting interact with them? As is they don't have to sleep or eat or breath, which makes them immune to a lot of things, but the -4 net to abilities pretty hefty (and I'm not sure it makes much sense, without flavor). Anyway, humans and half-breeds are the only races without favored classes, so I'd have to say pick a class unless they're a half-breed. I'd suggest wizard or fighter. Otherwise it's kind of a bland race. I'd never play one (where I would play a half-vampire with a LA). To spice it up I'd recommend: Low light vision or darkvision. +2 racial bonus to some skills. No more than 3. Flavor would determine what. Maybe a +3 bonus on turn checks to counteract the charisma penalty so that they can be clerics and still be able to affect true undead. Racial resistance to death spells. Racial resistance to cure spells. Supernatural abilities on par with gnomes, but darker, like disrupt undead 1/day or something. Maybe a few 0th level or one 1st level spell 1/day. |
| ressurrector02-23-07, 02:46 PM | "I'm not dead yet!" "I'm gettin' betta'!" It just had to be said... [/OT] Possibly something like light fortification, or poision immunity or similar, to represent them not really being alive. |
| Wildonion02-23-07, 04:38 PM | "It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead." The race needs some fluff behind it and the Charisma hit seems way too large compared to the benefits, I would think that you could simulate some social problems of being a dead guy with appropraite penalties to social skills (maybe penalties for Diplomacy and such) and give the dead guys some kind of bonus against poison and disease becuase I doubt that would hurt the dead much. |
| Imsolost02-23-07, 04:52 PM | Not to tute my own horn, but I have a similar idea for a not-quite-alive race that is powered by negative energy when necromancy goes awry. The Eternal (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=788545) They need to drain the lifeforce (blood) from living beings in order to maintain their own existence so they end up being somewhat similar to a vampire in theme. |
| Thiez02-23-07, 04:55 PM | <generate random fluff> They're from a land far, far away where dark epic necromancers have killed the land itself with their magicks. There were two options for those who lived there; try and fight it, or embrace the death magic and partially become it. </fluff> Good! Now racial bonusses on saving throws against poison, disease, and necromancy. Maybe negative energy resistance 1. The magic has warped their flesh and they are monsterous humanoids now. Their skin is partially rotten, explaining a charisma penalty (I think -4 is more than enough). Consider darkvision? |
| forrestfire1502-24-07, 11:54 AM | Anyway, humans and half-breeds are the only races without favored classes, so I'd have to say pick a class unless they're a half-breed. I'd suggest wizard or fighter. i forgot to add the favored class. sorry. Low light vision or darkvision. Good Idea Supernatural abilities on par with gnomes, but darker, like disrupt undead 1/day or something. Maybe a few 0th level or one 1st level spell 1/day. Another Good idea Possibly something like light fortification, or poision immunity or similar, to represent them not really being alive Good idea, i'm giving them poison resistance The Charisma penalty is -4 because of the +2 con, and i added a +2 Intelligence bonus to justify the other -2 of the penalty |
| forrestfire1503-01-07, 09:02 PM | Also, Semi-Dead are created by a boched ressurection attempt. They are kind of like the zombies from the 'Dawn Of The Dead' Remake, although they are intelligent and lack a craving for human flesh. |
| YabaTheWhat03-01-07, 10:10 PM | Semi-dead should probably be aberrations. Just my opinion. |
| forrestfire1503-02-07, 12:30 PM | that's a really good idea. |
