| strenoth11-19-07, 09:57 PM | I'm running a multi-genre game, and oen fo my players is thinking about playing a shadowrun character, namely a troll. So I'm trying to figure out what would make a good DnD representation of one. here's what I'm thinking so far. Humanoid +4 STR -2 DEX +4 CON -2 INT -2 CHA Powerful Build Darkvision 60' natural Armor +2 level adjustment: +1 alternatively: Humanoid +8 STR -2 DEX +8 CON -2 INT -4 CHA Large Size Darkvision 60' natural Armor +4 level adjustment: +2 What do you think is the better representation? |
| zenlike11-19-07, 10:01 PM | Why not just use the stats for the Ogre. Large size, reach, natural armor. Seems pretty close to the SR Troll (maybe a little on the strong side but close enough). Do you play SR? 3e or 4e? |
| strenoth11-20-07, 01:47 AM | A little, and 4th edition, and the ogre is very stupid, I'm aiming for less-than-bright, not "guhh, Me smash!" :) |
| zenlike11-20-07, 03:02 AM | You could reduce the Int. penalty and lower the Str. bonus of the Ogre. I try to avoid a lot of homebrew stuff as I worry about balance issues. Of the two options you have posted, I'd use the second. I'll let you know if I find any other races that fit the bill. I've had years of experience playing SR 2, 3, and 4. I tried running a SR campaign with the D20Modern and Urban Arcana rules and it was horrible. What kind of game are you running exactly? Is it a modern setting, fantasy, steampunk, or some other hybrid world? Actually, what about the Half-Ogre from Savage Species. +6 Str, -2 Dex, + 2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha. Large/10ft reach/DV 60ft/+4 Natural Armor...all for the low, low price of +1 LA. Seems like a good fit. |
| CrimsonDeath11-20-07, 03:50 AM | Half-Ogre was updated in Races of Destiny. |
| zenlike11-20-07, 04:04 AM | see next post...I messed this one up |
| zenlike11-20-07, 04:05 AM | Half-Ogre was updated in Races of Destiny. The +1 LA did seem a bit low. Still, I think it works for the character concept he has in mind. |
| strenoth11-20-07, 04:55 AM | well, the primary setting is a dimensional-nexus/city of home brew design that is both highmagic and high tech. I bled it together as best as I can, such as Hospitals don't really exist for normal injuries and sicknesses, adn clerics can do it better, but general research and preventative medicine/health care are done in small medical facilities. so for his character's class and feats, I'm probably going to be drawing on the star wars D20 RPG for fire-arms related feats and equipment. It's going to be fun trying to describe AR overlapping with everything else this place has. His character will be a recent accidental immigrant from the shadowrun-earth. |
| Ogrebear11-20-07, 09:05 AM | If you do a google on D20 Earthdawn and find Talon's excellant site then there is some Earthdawn Trolls converted on there, that should do most of what you need I think. |
| Ogrebear11-21-07, 08:21 AM | Found it! Here's Steve Kenso aka Talon's take on Earthdawn in D20 which should give you the SR style Trolls your after: Dungeons and Dragons in the Age of Legend here (http://members.aol.com/talonstudio/earthdawn/) Steve's main site is here (http://members.aol.com/talonmail/) and well worth the visit for anyone whos insterested in roleplaying as Steve really does know his stuff! Alternative take on Earthdawn D20: here (http://earthdawn.20m.com/) And heres a take on Shadowrun D20: Here (http://www.geocities.com/grinningkat/) |
| Derren S.11-23-07, 08:32 AM | You could also use the Goliath stats. Powerful Build seems to fit rather well. |
| 1 ton ghost11-23-07, 12:28 PM | nice call on the Nat. Armor for "Dermal Plating". i guess the only way to incorporate "Reach" is to make Size/Space: Large. still, you're idea is progressive which is refreshing around here. i've seen a few ppl cannibalizing Cthulhu and a few other RPGs for D&D here, but not so much SR to which i say well done. big fan myself. any plans on further fleshing it out? formorians, giants, etc (Paranormal Animals of Europe) and the like? |

Not unless a player is specifically interested in playing one of those. The game keeps me busy enough as it is. :) I had to do race creation & feat tweaking just so one player could be a 'leech' from FFXI (and is playing as the familiar of another player). I also have a Dire-ape monk, and a wererat halfling rouge. And then there's the modified (powered down) nymph, and... yeah, it's a bit of an interesting menagerie in this game. :) Only thing keeping ti sane is that it's play-by-post and I've got 3 separate threads for ongoing storylines. |
| FrostWolf01-31-08, 06:44 AM | Hmm... Interesting. |

The first one is better, it's pretty close to Half-Ogre in SS as others have stated. I think +1 LA is fine... I'd just up the NA to +4 LA +2 I don't think is out of the question for this either |
