I wish you could shift more often (like 2 more times) without having to invest your hard earned feats on shifter feats (not that those shifter feats are bad, its just that they making building character combos a bit more tricky) Other than that i think they are pretty cool. I particularly like the extra Shifter types presented in Races of Eberron

-2 on 2 mental stats, +2 on Dex, +2 on another Physical stat while shifting

One of the most versatile races in that they can have +2 Str, +2 Con, or even +2 Wis. One of the very very few bace races with a plus to Wis, and the bonus abilities granted while shifting make you hardcore cool. I do also wish you could shift more often, but if I compare them to humans, it feels pretty good. Get the stats you want, and get a hell of a benefit for probably 2-3 encounters a day minimum.

I love the crazy little jerks.

I haven't played one, but read everything I have on them(RoE, and MM3 I believe it was, and the ECS) and I really like em, next character I make might be one.

Love the flavor, dislike the mechanics.

As had been said shifters either do not focus on their shifter abilities and end up with one or two off nifty little boost every now and then, or you have very few viable very feat dependant builds to utalize your shifter abilities.

People looking to make a shifter who uses their natural attacks will quickly find it limiting. Especially at low levels where you can only do it once a day for a few rounds.

A game of rumor allows extra shifts for characters taking the favored Class every 4-6 levels (different rumors, sry) for an extra 3-5 by 20th.

I really like shifters, but the dependence on feats makes them tough to use sometimes.

I also don't care for their racial mods either, as it lessens their flexibility, like the Half-Orc.

Usually, I house rule that a shifter gets a bonus Shifter Feat at 1st level. It doesn't really unbalance the race, and you can spend your standard feat on something else you want.

im interested in shifters as well, but iv got a question to ask. After looking at the PH2 and then looking at shifters, would it be to OP if i were to change the shifters "shifting" ability if it functioned like the barbarian alternate class feature?

Like i would shift if my hp went under X hp but if i went over that X hp i would stop shifting. I thought it would have been a cool thing roleplay wise, and was also thinking of the times per day you could shift. If its like the barbarian alt class feature then i can shift per say as many times per day as i want, but the trade off is i have to be low on hp to be shifted.

I dunno its just a thought i had.

Don't see a problem with that plan, Daemionn. I'm sure some people would argue, but personally I think its fine. A cool twist, the more hurt they are, the more they retreat into their more feral instinctual selves.

As for giving a free shifter feat at 1st level, Hanzo, I like that too. Not entirely sure its necessary, but think I'd use it anyway.

And my personal opinion on shifters? If I could be any race from d&d, I'd be a shifter.

I definately wana play a feral shifter barbarian with the barbarian alt class feature and the shifter house rule i jsut thought of. Me Goin under x amount of HP means me ripping you apart limb by limb lol.

The best way I found to fix that was to be a Shifter Fighter. This way you can gat the benifits of a feat progression, like the power attack or point blank shot tree, and use level feats to gain shifts. It worked really well for my last Eberron character.
