OK, two questions, both relating to Shifters.

First, what book are the from?

Second, can anyone give an overall summary of the race, what it's role is, and so forth? Thanks muchly!

Question 1: Eberron Campaign setting, Races of Eberron, and MM3

As for the second one, I guess it varies.

Without getting too detailed, basically Shifters are to Lycanthropes as Aasimar are to Celestial beings. The "curse" of lycanthropy has diluted itself in unselective breeding enough that Shifters are basically much weaker versions (and thus much lower in LA) of classic lycanthropes. While they always look bestial, they can "shift" and get some more bestial qualities of whatever stock they came from.

In Eberron there is this strenuous relationship between the Shifters and one of the prominant churches who viewed ALL lycanthropes as unforgivingly evil, sysmatically slaughtering all they could find. Shifters' rights to live, sharing some of their heritage with Lycanthropes, was hotly contested but ultimately the church and governmental powers that be decided that they were their own beings and were left to live.

As the above posters have said, the shifter race is from the eberron campaign setting. They have a a ranger favored class, and a plus to dex with minuses to int and cha.

As was also previously stated, the church of the silver flame went on a crusade to wipe out all of the lycanthropes in the land, and there is much controversy with shifters, as well as much tension between them and the church.

I'm running an eberron campaign next month, and if I can find someone to play a paladin of the silver flame, I know I've got someone who's playing a shifter. It'll make for a very interesting campaign backstory type thing.
