Ok I never run non-standard races. So this adding templates to PC's is new territory for me.
But I've got a player, who's been doing well, and really wants to run a half-fiend. So I figured I'd cave and let him finally play one.

I'm reading over the d20srd page and looking over the Half-fiend info. Its all clear except what about starting hitpoints?
The group is starting at level 5, so he's going to be a halffiend and a level 1whatever (Probably rogue). as the LA is 4.

What does he roll for HP? 1 die (1d6 +con)
Or does he roll die for each level? I looked over at the orgre which specifies that the person rolls 3d8. But I didn't see anything like that for the half-fiend

You always get max HP for first HD. The ogre has 4 HD, he gets max for the first, then he roles 3d8 for the rest of his hp. If he takes one level of barbarian he rolls 1d12 for the level. In the half-fiend's case his hp will be 6(if a rogue) + Con modifer.

So if everyone else is level 5 and have 5d(whatever)+con hp. And he's a half-fiend rogue 1 he has 6+con hp?
Is that right, sorry if I'm being dense.
That just seems kinda harsh.

Yeah, it is really harsh. You've just stumbled upon the bright new world of "Wow, WotC did a pretty bad job designing that, didn't they?" Although, admittedly, the LA system isn't too bad. It's just that the inherent system underlying it is screwed up.

A Half-Fiend Rogue1 is going to spend a LOT of time completely avoiding enemies. Or dying.

Of course, with all those natural weapons, if he concentrates on setting up melee sneak attacks he'll be able to dish out some hurt too.
