Hey All,

I have some queries about the race known only as "The Spell-Scale"
This race can be found in the Races of Dragons, source book

My query begins with a power level rating.

First off though.

1.) Favoured Class Sorceror
2.) Dragonblooded
3.) +2 cha, -2 con
4.) Blood-Quickening (99% of my queries focus here).

Ok, so favoured class is sorceror, personally, a spellscale wizard...much better.

Assume player chooses wizard, and decides to focus on metamagic feats. Due to him being a spell-scale, he ESSENTIALLY has many of them for free. Here is my example of how I could do this.

First Note: A wizard who prepares a spell, and does not cast it, need not prepare it the next day. Hence, he could prepare several spells on day 1, yet not cast them until day 5, with little to no rest or any of that stuff.

Second Note: Most spell-scale blood-quickenings give use of metamagic feats, this use was likely thought up in terms of the sorceror, who cannot "save" uncast spells.

So, A wizard spellscale could say, use blood-quickening to get extend spell, prepare some extended spells, not cast them and go onto day 2.

On day 2, he could use blood-quickening to get empower spell, prepare some empowered spells, then not cast them and go onto day 3.

Note: His extended spells are still prepared, he used the feat say, once, and so did not go over any daily spell-scale limit. He doesn't actually have to cast the spell that day though, as per wizard.

Note: It is true, that he cannot prepare an extended, empowered spell in this way, since he only has access to the feats on seperate days.

Does this not make a spell-scale wizard too powerful? I realize most speeches on power relate to that ONE combat he'll have with X class, or that ONE fight he'll have with X monster. I'm taking into consideration, the long-running use over a campaign.

For instance, barring a time-constrained campaign, the PC's getting used to long-ingame encounters, realize that allowing the wizard 3-4 days of extending his spells prior to going anywhere is a smart idea. Normally a wizard would have to take the feat, or somehow find a rod. The spell-scale wizard sits down for a few days, and does it, then goes on normally.

Does this make the spell-scale more powerful than, well, any other race. I have actually allowed two spell-scales in my games, but both played spontaneous casters so this problem did not occur. I am simply asking in case a player wishes to combine this race with a preparation class. Cleric, Wizard, Druid, Wu-Jen, Spirit Shaman. I realize many threads talk about "CoDzilla" or "Super Wizards". I don't care, please post in those threads.

I simply wish to know the general feeling of spell-scales and preparation based casters that gain higher level spellslots.

Please Enlighten Me, Is this race too powerful/broken? Are it's abilities balanced simply because he can only use one at a time? Or is this race too powerful for an LA + 0? Would it be balanced to give an LA of say +1 or +2 to this race? Obviously, with regards to spell-scale non-casters, none of their racials apply. With regards to spell-scales who don't gain higher level spell-slots, this ability is hardcore nerfed.
