09-24-07, 05:37 PM I acid tested a Spine devil from Tyrants of the nine hells page 136 and came up with LA +5 I was just hoping for a little back up on this.

That would give them an ECL of 8 according to the rules. Their spell like abilities, racial abilities, and stat bonuses, combined with the low HP for only 3Hd make them hard to place.

The abilities make them too good at low levels, and the lack of hit points make them too weak at higher levels.

I guess if you stated your reason someone could make changes to bring the ECL down to a playable level depending on what you wanted from this race.

09-24-07, 07:50 PM I believe when I first did the Spinagon, I got a similar result.

However, I also showed a little mercy, with low HD and Small size somewhat against it (according to SS, so I'm probably wrong :D ), I ended up sticking the LA at +4.

I don't get the chance to test things out, especially my own projects, but it sounds right compared to other monsters I've played.

I believe the "LA chart" in MotP also placed the (much more powerful) spinagon at either 7 or 8, so the estimates we've gotten are fairly close to what WotC may actually think....:eek:
