Hey, as the title says I am starting a Maug PC. ECL 6 so one class level TBD. I was wondering if anyone could help me sort out what stat bonuses (I think I got these) and so forth I get.

I see they have a +30 hp but no CON score, so I was trying to figure out where that came from as well.

Or what they're speed is normally since they are wearing Full Plate and it's 40ft (can't run).

I assume the fact that the Exotic Proficiency Feat was left out was a mistake, but I also seem to remember that anything that is in a creature's description in a book it is assumed to have proficiency in.

I think that's everything for now. I am going to keep searching for the info, and thank you in advance for anyone who posts some help. Feel free to PM me as well if you would prefer.

Ok, found two answers where I should have looked first, the SRD.

The +30hp are for being a large Construct, and the EWP for the Two-Bladed Sword is a result of since it is mentioned in the entry he is assumed to have a proficiency in it.

Still have no idea about the speed. Help appreciated.

Stat Mods = +10 Str, +4 Dex, No Con, +2 Int, +2 Cha.

Their speed is probably 50 feet, since they have no ability saying they can move in full plate normally. So 50 feet and you can't run.

Thank you!

That's about what I thought too concerning the speed. The attributes seemed off, though of course it was a +3 LA and 2HD, so I suppose that's pretty reasonable.

Well, the Maug is large sized. Its not too much more than an enlarged human.

When it comes to ability scores, you're supposed to subtract 10 from even numbers and 11 from odd numbers to get the modifiers. Thats generally how its done unless stats are already given.

I found a Maug "monster class" that looks good by searching Yahoo.
I'll see if I can find it again and post a link...;)

it's not a bad class but leaves out the speed issue. It's not a big worry... I'm starting at ECL 6, so I don't really need a progression. Thanks a lot though!

Note that IIRC also speed of 60ft is reduced to 40ft when in heavy armor. So the speed is somewhere between 50 and 60 ft. Maug is overall a very, very powerful being as a PC, so maybe 50ft is enough.

Med/Hev armor reduces a persons speed to 2/3 of base.

Which means that 50 in speed = 35 in med/heavy armor, not 40. 55-60 = 40 in spd.

In my campaign the maug has 40. I put it like that mainly for balance. The maug is a very powerful race, no point of making it more powerful than it already is. As maugs don't get tired they can hustle indefinetly, meaning they can run som 350km a day with 40 in spd and 440km with 50 in spd.

My summary of the maug:
2 bonus feats (alertness, two bladedsword)
prof in heavy armor
1 HD feat
SR: 12+HD

I have run into two maugs thus far, one is a fighter/monk/Warblade trip-monkey the other is a pure fighter trip-monkey. Both with reach weapons and high dex.

Sure 40 feet may seem like much, but Maugs cannot run. So they probably can move 60 feet, which is kinda broken, given the low LA in comparison and benefits... But what if you need to run? The other PCs will just dart right past you!

Though I'd probably house rule it at being 40 to balance it, you can probably try to go for 60 feet, even though a huge chunk of stone moving that fast is a bit silly.

Just a note, I don't think they have two bonus feats. I suppose you could call it one since they have proficiency in their two-bladed swords as a result of being a construct, but their 1HD feat is alertness. There is no other indication that it isn't. And while I think that 60ft is supposed to be the base speed, I don't care since I'll be wearing full plate day and night without sleep issues.

I'm actually thinking about running him as a Crusader for story purposes, and the fact that it allows me to heal in an environment without a mage who can repair me.

Wrong!

The Maug in Fiend Folio has a total of three feats:
Alertness (with a B behind it, indicating it as a bonus feat)
Two Weapon Fighting
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Two Bladed Sword). This feat isn't mentioned, but: Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry
This means that a Maug is proficient with Two Bladed sword and its Slam attacks. Nothing else (except from classes and blablabla). One could say that the Maug starts with a racial proficency (Two Bladed Sword), thus it starts with only one bonus feat: Alertness. Plus feats gained through its 1 HD.

Corrected! Lol.

Math is Hard it would seem.

I'm thinking the more I look that the Maug really is quite good for ECL 6, but that he will be much less potent at higher levels, which is good.
