My group is starting up a new campaign with a Gladiator setting and I wanted to have a race that used a special class that allowed Bull-rushing with melee attacks.

What medium race do you know has a really high strength bonus? preferred intelligent race.

Can be anything as long as it doesn't have anything higher than a +8 LA

Edit: Templates are also in as long as they pass +8 adjustment.

Goliath and Half-Giant are pretty good, I think. Only +1 LA each.

Why do you need to be Medium, though? Because Large size gives lots of bonuses to Bull Rush, etc., and Centaur could be a good option with 4 HD and +2 LA...

Also, any LA above +2 is probably a really bad idea. My God, an LA of +8 would be absolutely crippling to you. :yuck:

Mostly I want it to be medium for flavor, since I find the idea of being able to push back larger foes at meduim size interesting.

We were required to make 3 Gladiators and I have 2 right now who are I like and am about to make

A Yuan-ti Abomination with a level in Dark Prowler ( Class I made)
And a Monk/PrC I also made myself who is a race I made myself. Noticing a pattern? heh.

It's a low-magic campaign to, so having Characters with naturally gifted powers and ability modifiers help. Were going to have limited access to both spells AND magical items.

A Half-Dragon Orc (medium, LA +3) would have +12 Str, +2 Con and -2 Wis, not to mention 3 natural attacks, natural armor, one energy immunity and breath weapon 1/day. Hook THAT up with some barbarian! :D

Haha, that's a great combo. I'm liking the Half Dragon. Maybe Half-Giant for Powerful Build instead?

Half-Giants have lower strength and higher LA. They're good for some things, but for Strength builds you should probably just stick with Orc. Also, Orcs can take the Orc Paragon class for another +2 Str if they so chose.

Also note that if high LA isn't a problem, then you can stack the Half-Dragon template multiple times. A Half-Red-Dragon Half-Blue-Dragon Orc has Str +20, immunity to two popular energy types, and a whole bunch of other goodies. Or, do the whole process on a Centaur - that hits LA +8 on the nose, and gives you Str +24 and wings. You do count as Large though.

As for maxing bullrush specifically.... check the Buffetting Fist Air Elemental graft from Magic of Eberron, and I believe there's a Maug graft in Fiend Folio that gives you spiffy bullrush stuff too.

Thanks for the tip! Can you have wings and still be Medium?

Is a graft a magic item? I'm not to familiar with Eberron.

Unless you're going psionic, the goliath is hands-down more powerful. The barbarian racial sub level Mountain Rage from Races of Stone is exceptional, and the extra +2 Str is always nice.

I would sort of recommend a Half-Dragon Half-Ogre, for Large size, immense Strength, great natural armor and wings, all at +5 LA.

You can have the wings, but not from Half-Dragon. That template only provides wings for things of Large size or larger, which stinks for the smaller races but the template's pretty nice as it is.

Grafts are basically replacement body parts. For Buffetting Fist, basically your hand is replaced by Air Elemental hands, which permantently costs you some HP, but allows you to use them as normal and gain some awesome abilities, like Deflect Arrows multiple times per round, and a 1/day (I believe) ability to make a Bull Rush at a big bonus vs everyone adjacent to you. The Maug one I believe is implanted in your chest, and gives you a third arm that can't weild weapons or anything, but can be used for Bull Rush checks or any time you need to push something heavy. So.... it's magic, sorta, but it's not really an item, and it does function in an AMF if that's a concern.\

How much HP would I lose? It's gonna be a melee type so would it cripple me in anyway?

Edit: Any advice on how I can counter my problem with my BaB? it's gonna be real low since I'm using a template

Well, the Half-Fey entry shows are really gross-looking flying centaur too, and there's always the flying unicorn-zerbra-pegasus from Zebraman which, while not technically a flying centaur, is just as messed up.

Also, sig'd.

As for hp, you lose some because of the huge LA, but gain some back on having a +8 Con modifier, and your AC will be pretty huge from +4 Dex and +11 NA. BAB is counteracted by high Strength; you won't get many iterative attacks, so focus on Tome of Battle strikes and other Standard Action special attacks. Saves will be an issue though.

I know this is about the race, but for a PrC if they are allowed reaping mauler isnt to bad.

Its in Comp Warrior.

A friend of mine won 1st place in both the non-casting and free-for-all entries in a 20th level tourney with a Monk Reaping Mauler. About 8 entries in each. One on one elimination style. He even had some magic items and abilities selected for flair and nothing else.

A note on the half-dragon centaur's nat AC: A highlight of the half-dragon template is that instead of granting a nat AC, the description reads: "Natural armor improves by +4." No stacking issues, eh? :D Try a Half-Dragon Kobold for a barrel of fun.

I'd advise against it. Insane strength works better with a good old two-handed weapon, ideally one with reach.

Agreed. EWP: Scorpion Claws (Sandstorm) works better than the entire Reaping Mauler class. Especially if your DM lets you dual-weild.

I'm somewhat surprised there has been no mention of Stonechild from Races of Stone, large bonuses to both Str and Con and a bonus to Int. Also gives Outsider HD.

Oh gods. Can't we all just collectively decide to forget that ludicrously unbalanced "Mineral Warrior" template ever existed? The stupid thing should never have existed in the first place.

Mineral Warrior '08.

OP? Yes. Ridiculously so? Perhaps. Proof that deep, deep down Wizards actually cares about Melee just a little bit? Without a doubt.

WAIT WAIT WAIT STOP THE PRESSES MAN!

Why do you need a PRC to bullrush with melee attacks? All you need is large size/ powerfull build, and a feat. Knockback in races of stone. Pretty much gives you a free bullrush attempt everytime you hit something, and you dont move with 'em, you just send them flying like ragdolls.

Oh, and natural Goliath were Guard Bat from MM2 (Unfurtunatly you would be large in hybrid form. But large with powerfull build...... Huge if you where to use mountain rage)

You end up with +10Str, +10Dex 100ft blind sense, The entire spring attack tree as BONUS FEATS, a 40ft fly speed, dr 10/magic and silver, a blood draining attack....... (All before rageing or whatever)
For 4 Racial HD and a +4 LA

Sigh..... if only goliaths where giants like they should be... stupid monstrous humanoids not being able to be lycans :{

Half-dragon grimlock. LA 5, 2 HD. But they're full BAB hit dice (+2 BAB total not +1), they give you spot and listen (and more) as class skills and thanks to half-dragon they're d12's.

So basically for LA +5 you get:
+12 Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con, -2 Wis, -2 Cha, +2 Int
+8 natural armor
40' blindsight (see perfectly w/o eyes)
Breath weapon.
+10 to hide checks underground.

If your DM doesn't count the HD towards the LA, slap on another half dragon template.

Grimlocks special brand of blind sight comes with HEAVY penalties that requier concideration.....

Grimlocks can sense all foes within 40 feet as a sighted creature would. Beyond that range, they treat all targets as having total concealment.

Grimlocks are susceptible to sound- and scent-based attacks, however, and are affected normally by loud noises and sonic spells (such as ghost sound or silence) and overpowering odors (such as stinking cloud or incense-heavy air). Negating a grimlock’s sense of smell or hearing reduces this ability to normal Blind-Fight (as the feat). If both these senses are negated, a grimlock is effectively blinded.

A silence spell and a scented candle makes you completly blind, without any kind of save. You basically have a 25% chance to miss attacking the wall if someone around you wears too much perfume. Dont adventure with elves.....

Fortunately 95% of monsters aren't prepped. The 40' limit is a bugger, but shouldn't be too bad with some party members. You can always carry an eversmoking bottle everywhere for greater effectiveness, too.

Have you considered the Half Ogre template from Dragon #350?

If your base creature is Medium you become Large gaining every thing in the DMG for changing size + some nice stat changes! All For +1 LA!!

Its outlined in the template pdf here: Crystal Keep (http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php)

Half Minotaur(crystal keep or dragon) Goliath (races of stone) Mineral Warrior (some underdark book) +18 STR, +8 CON, +0 WIS, minuses in everything else.

Huge natural armor, good DR, scent, gore attack, loads of other nice stuff.

ONLY +3 LA!

The problem is that you're large and VERY VERY cheesy. Although multiple templates DO decrease in power so all 3 are less broken than each taken individually.

04-22-08, 04:18 PM
Half-Dragon Lolth-Touched Orc, perhaps? +18 Str in total for +4 LA, and only semi-cheesy.

Instead of Orc, you could also try a Half-Ogre. Sure, it's Large, which you may not want, but it gives bonuses, too. +2 Str more than an Orc does, and extra Con. Plus, you're Giant type, so Hold Person and such don't affect you.
