How many subraces are there of Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Halflings and Goblinoids?

What is the real differences between subraces within the confines of a given race. Does it make a difference at all as far as mechanics or is it merely cosmetic?

Thanks.

Generally a subrace will have a mechanical difference from the normal version of the race, but they don't have to.

As Lokathor said, some differences can just be cultural rather than mechanical. In my game, I refer to different cultural groups with the same stats as ethnic groups whereas those with mechanical variations are subraces, but that's just my preference.

There's 4 or so elf subraces, 4 dwarf subraces, 3 gnome subraces, and two halfling subraces- just in the MM (I'm including the default subraces here by the way). The link given by zook1shoe666 is a compilation of all WotC published material, I believe. Don't use all those subraces in your game (obviously); pick 1-5 for every race and make sure they all have a point, in my opinion.

Thanks for the help so far. The link was very helpful. I was wondering though about Hobgoblin subraces do they exist?
