| Grimgrin02-14-08, 11:59 AM | Sugar and Spice d20 is a toolset for converting PLAYER CHARACTERS (and NPC'S) to candy coated versions. This was basically inspired by the "Shrek" movie GINGERBREAD MAN and GINGER GIANT and a videogame called "Ninjabread Man". PDF for Convenience: Sugar&SpiceD20 PDF: http://www.freewebs.com/grimgrin4488/SugarNSpiceD20.pdf Sugar & Spice d20: Not so Nice Deserts This campaign is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Only the bravest of the brave dare face the changes held within the forsaken room known as the kitchen. Those brave enough to enter are faced with a Cornucopia of deadly deserts and malicious munchies. Wicked kitchen wizards brew up delicacies beyond the nightmares of the most depraved refrigerator raider. Gourmand Alchemists push back the frontiers of the known Cooking Science and plunge headlong into the bowels of arcane cuisine. Intrepid frosted heroes battle what breeds in the deepest corners of abandoned cupboards waiting to devour the unwary. Brave cookies explore the frozen wastelands of the Artic Icebox. Misguided cupcakes experiment in forbidden recipes and make pacts with Devils Food Cakes from below. Undead snack cakes rise from their individually packaged graves and torment the sweet and sour alike. A molten lava cake erupts and engulfs all of treat territory in a swirl of boiling chocolate. Creature Confection Template A creature confection is a template unique to “S&S d20” adventures. It is an uncomplicated template that can be added to any corporeal creature to change it into a candy version. The template is designed with a CR +0 adjustments so it will not change the CR of the standard monsters of the D&D monster manuals. The only two changes are additions to the special qualities and vulnerabilities of the monster based on its “Flavor” and “Candy Texture”. Flavor provides the theme and game mechanics of the creature confection. Candy Texture provides a guideline for what type of candy the monsters are made. The candy confection is not intended to be a construct (except for candy golems) and in general does not have any of the traits common to a construct such as immunity to critical hits or magic. Player Characters are created as the standard creature then this template is layered on top. Mundane and magical items are easily converted to candy themed variants. Since the scale of the game is proportional to the size of the player characters, candy confections can interact with meat and blood creatures or exist in a kitchen world of their own were furniture and appliances form continents and islands to explore. Pick a Flavor (Choose One) The flavor of the creature confection serves two purposes. First is defines the creatures basic outlook on life and the symbolism within the flavor. Secondly the flavor provides each creature with a color profile, a racial benefit, a racial drawback, and it favored class if the creature pursues any type of character class. The “flavor” of the creature is considered a special quality. Apple: Apples appear in many religious traditions, often as a mystical or forbidden fruit. One of the problems identifying apples in religion, mythology and folktales is that the word "apple" was used as a generic term for all (foreign) fruit, other than berries but including nuts, as late as the 17th C. CE.; For instance, in Greek mythology, the Greek hero Heracles, as a part of his Twelve Labors, was required to travel to the Garden of the Hesperides and pick the golden apples off the Tree of Life growing at its center. The apple has a strong association with pentacles, stars, and the number five. Apples are a seasonal fruit but the many varieties of apples each have a different season through the year. Cider (or Apple Jack) is a drink made from fermented apples. Some bitter apples are good for baking while others are intended for eating. Common Color: Light Green Benefit: Five Fold Path (Ex): This creature can re-roll any d20 roll. This new score is substituted for the previous roll even if it is lower than the number it replaces. This ability can be used once by creatures with 1 HD and again for every 5 HD the creature gains each day. Drawback: Bad Apples (Ex): Apple candies are subject to a historical prejudice that they are untrustworthy. All apple confections must suffer a racial -2 penalty to all Bluff and Diplomacy checks. Favored Class: Monk Banana: Bananas come in a variety of sizes and colors when ripe, including yellow, purple and red and grow in emense bunches. Bananas can be eaten raw though some varieties are generally cooked first. Depending upon cultivation and ripeness, the flesh can vary in taste from starchy to sweet, and texture from firm to mushy. Unripe or green bananas and plantains are used for cooking various dishes and are the staple starch of many tropical populations. Banana sap is extremely sticky and can be used as a practical adhesive. Sap can be obtained from either the pseudostem, the fruit peelings, or the from the flesh. While the original bananas contained rather large seeds, triploid (and thus seedless) cultivars have been selected for human consumption. These are propagated asexually from offshoots of the plant. The plant is allowed to produce 2 shoots at a time; a larger one for fruiting immediately and a smaller "sucker" or "follower" that will produce fruit in 6–8 months time. The life of a banana plantation is 25 years or longer, during which time the individual stools or planting sites may move slightly from their original positions as lateral rhizome formation dictates. Latin Americans sometimes comment that the plants are "walking" over time. A “Banana Republic” is a country usually economically dependent on the export of a single cash crop and ruled by a dictatorship or oligarchy. Common Color: Banana Yellow Benefit: Prat Fall (Ex): Banana can use the Perform (Comedy) skill to reduce the damage inflicted by a fall. The DC of the skill check is equal to 10 plus the number of feet fallen. If the performance check is successful, the fall damage is reduced by 50% (round down). Drawback: Humorous Appeal (Ex): No one takes a banana confection seriously and it suffers a racial -2 penalty on all CHA based checks not related to performing. Favored Class: Bard Blueberry: Blue was called "azure" by heralds, and represents the color of an eastern sky on a clear day. It also corresponds to the metal tin. The word, “azure” was introduced from the east during the Crusades. It signifies piety and sincerity, and is equated with autumn. In engravings it is represented by horizontal lines. Berries of all kinds are a symbol of good luck. Berries are considered to be evidence of divine kindness and a symbol of the goodness of providence. The largest producer of blueberries in the world is Chile. Huckleberries are technically the fruit and plant of Gaylussacia, but also colloquially applied to the closely related blueberry. Huckleberry has a slang meaning of "person of little consequence". Common Color: Blue Benefit: True Blue (Ex): A blueberry can add its CHA modifier to its massive damage threshold and so becomes less vulnerable to death by massive damage. Drawback: Blueblood (Ex): Many see blueberry confections as snobs and initially view them harshly. NPC encounters with a blueberry are initially always one step less “friendly”. Favored Class: Paladin Caramel/Toffee Flavor: Caramel is the natural taste of sugar when it is cooked to a high level of heat. The brown color is a natural result of the sugar being cooked. Toffee is caramel with butter, milk, and sometimes flour added to it. Butterscotch is toffee with vanilla added. These candies can be shapped and allowed to cool into candies or used as a sauce to coat fruit, nuts, or other deserts. Common Color: Brown Benefit: Sticky Fingers (Ex): A caramel candy gains a +2 racial bonus to resist disarming attempts and gains a +2 racial bonus on all “Sleight of Hand” skill checks. Drawback: Fingerprints (Ex): A caramel confection tends to leave a residue on all objects it touches. Any creature attempting to track the candy gains a +2 bonus. In addition, scrolls and potions carried by the confection have a 10% cumulative chance of spoilage per day (DM rolls after the object is used to see if it activates). Favored Class: Rogue Cherry: The cherry symbolizes the sweetness of character that is derived from good works. It is often referred to as "the fruit of Paradise" in reference to the destination of those who perform good deeds. The word cherry comes from the French word “cherise” which means "maidenhead, virginity, and chastity". Cherries have long been a symbol of the fleeting quality of life's pleasures. A “Cherry-picker”, in the pejorative sense, is a person who only takes the finest things in life and scorns the rest. Common Color: Red Benefit: Cherry Blossum (Ex): A cherry candy knows that life is fleeting and that it must make the most of each day. Once per day, the confection can add its one half its HD total to any single d20 roll. Drawback: Death Before Dishonor (Ex): A cherry confection that strays from the “lawful” alignment must atone for its sins or suffers a 10% penalty on all experience points earned. For a successful atonement, the confection must defeat or overcome a challenge with a CR equal to its HD total single handedly. Favored Class: Samurai (or Monk) Cinnamon: Originally stripped from the bark of a tree in the avocado family. Ceylon cinnamon, the true cinnamon, is used in Britain, but American cinnamon is almost always from the related cassia tree of Southeast Asia and is stronger and sweeter. Cinnamon is commonly used in spicy-hot candies and is symbolic of passionate desire. “Allspice” is a spice made from the berry of the Jamaican pimento, 1621, named so because it is supposed to combine the flavour of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Common Color: Red or Reddish Brown Benefit: Passion’s Fury (Ex): Once per day the Cinnamon can “rage” like a barbarian. This ability stacks with any other “rages per day” gained by class or prestige class. Drawback: Obsessive Desire (Ex): The cinnamon confection must make a Will Save (DC: 10 plus half its HD total rounded down) to prematurely end its rage or it will continue to attack the nearest target whether friend or foe. Favored Class: Barbarian Cocoa Bean: The cocoa bean is one of the ingredients of chocolate. The cacao tree may have originated in the foothills of the Andes in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America where today, examples of wild cacao still can be found. However, it may have had a larger range in the past, evidence for which may be obscured because of its cultivation in these areas long before, as well as after, the Spanish arrived. It may have been introduced into Central America by the ancient Mayas, and cultivated in Mexico by the Toltecs and later by the Aztecs. It was a common currency throughout Mesoamerica and the Caribbean before the Spanish conquests. Cacao trees will only grow in a limited geographical zone, of approximately 20 degrees to the north and south of the Equator. Nearly 70% of the world crop is grown in West Africa. The world chocolate comes from the Nahuatl word xocolatl, from xococ "bitter" + atl "water" due to the taste of unsweetened ground cocoa beans. Chocolate was brought to Spain for first time 1520. Common Color: Any shade of brown Benefit: Invigoration (Ex): This confection can hold off the effects of fatigue for an extra number of rounds equal to its CON modifier. This ability can only be used once per day and after it is used, the creature suffers the normal effects of fatigue. Drawback: Hyper (Ex): This confection has a short attention span and finds it hard to focus on a single task for longer than an hour. The creature must make a Concentration check to perform any skill that takes longer than an hour. The Concentration DC is the same as performing the intended skill. A failed roll inflicts a -10 penalty on any further skill checks using the attempted skill for the rest of the day. Favored Class: Fighter Coconut: Fossil records from New Zealand indicate that small, coconut-like plants grew there as long as 15 million years ago. Even older fossils have been uncovered in Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, (India) and the oldest known so far in Khulna, Bangladesh. Regardless of its origin, the coconut has spread across much of the tropics, probably aided in many cases by sea-faring peoples. The fruit is light and buoyant and presumably spread significant distances by marine currents. Fruits collected from the sea as far north as Norway have been found to be viable (and subsequently germinated under the right conditions). In the Hawaiian Islands, the coconut is regarded as a Polynesian introduction, first brought to the islands by early Polynesian voyagers from their homelands in the South Pacific. They are now ubiquitous to most of the planet between 26ºN and 26ºS. The coconut provides food, milk, and a hard shell that can be crafted into tools or jewelry. The word “coconut” comes from the Portuguese word coco meaning "grinning face," based on the resemblance of the three holes at the base of the shell to a human face. Common Color: White Benefit: Tough Nut to Crack (Ex): A coconut confection gains a +2 bonus to resist Intimidation or Bluff checks and gains a +2 Will save to resist mental probe or telepathic effects. Drawback: Life’s a Beach (Ex): Coconut candies are in no rush to due anything and have extremely poor time management skills. A Concentration check is required (DC equal to task attempted) to finish any task at the appointed time. Failure means performing the task late 1d4 TU late. “TU” in this case means “time units” and usually means minutes for a timed assault, hours for a scheduled meeting, and days for a crafted object. Favored Class: Spirit Shaman (or Druid) Coffee Bean: A coffee bean is the seed of the coffee plant (the pit inside the red or purple fruit). The fruits, coffee cherries or coffee berries, most commonly contain two stones with their flat sides together. Coffee may be named after the Kaffa region of Ethiopia, a home of the plant (coffee in Kaffa is called “buno”). Coffee was also called Kahveh by the Turkish, Qahwah by the Arabs, and Chaoua in Yemen. Much of the initial diversity of spelling is due to an effort to protect the secret botanical source of coffee beans. Yemen was the first great coffee exporter and to protect its trade decreed that no living plant could leave the country. In the 16 century, a Muslim pilgrim brought some coffee beans from Yemen and raised them in India. Coffee first appeared in Europe (from Arabia) c.1515-1519. It was introduced to England by 1650. By 1675, England had more than 3,000 coffee houses. Coffee plantations established in Brazil 1727. The word “caffeine” comes from the German, kaffein, coined by chemist F.F. Runge (1795-1867) after modern latin coffea "coffee" + chemical suffix –ine. Common Color: Dark Brown Benefit: Adrenaline Rush (Ex): For a number of rounds equal to its CON modifer plus 1 (1 rnd. Min.), the confection gains an extra attack based on its BAB score with its primary natural weapon or any hand held weapon. For the rest of the combat encounter the confection suffers from “fatigue”. This ability can only be used once per day. Drawback: Addictive (Ex): The confection becomes addicted to adrenaline and will take needless risks. In combat encounters, the confection has a racial -1 AC penalty due to its reckless nature. Favored Class: Ranger Ginger Root: The name ginger is based on its shape “a horn body” root. Historically it was commonly baked into gingerbread cookies and cakes which was a way of preserving the ginger flavor for a long time. The age of the ginger root determines its flavor. Young ginger is mild and juicy. Mature ginger is dry, fibrous, and extremely bitter. The medical form of ginger historically was called "Jamaica ginger"; it was classified as a stimulant and carminative, and used frequently for dyspepsia and colic. It was also frequently employed to disguise the taste of medicines. Ginger may also decrease joint pain from arthritis, though studies on this have been inconsistent, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties that may make it useful for treating heart disease. Ginger has been found effective by multiple studies for treating nausea caused by seasickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy,[6] though ginger was not found superior over a placebo for post-operative nausea. The characteristic odor and flavor of ginger root is caused by a mixture of zingerone, shoagoles and gingerols, volatile oils that compose about one to three percent of the weight of fresh ginger. In laboratory animals, the gingerols increase the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and have analgesic, sedative, antipyretic and antibacterial properties. To “ginger up” a object is to add spice or pizzazz. “Gingerbread Work” is slang for fancy painting or decorative trim added to a ship or house. Common Color: Pale Yellow or Pale Green Benefit: Ginger Extract (Ex): The confection is immune to nausea and can’t be “nauseated”. Drawback: A Taste for the Finer Things (Ex): The confection prefers fine and exotic foods that cost ten times what a normal meal or travel ration would cost. If the confection fails to feed its appetite, then the candy creature suffers a -1 morale penalty to all saving throws for the rest of the day. Favored Class: Druid Lemon/Lime: Limey is an old American and Canadian slang nickname for the British, originally referring to British sailors. The term is believed to derive from lime-juicer, referring to the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy practice of supplying lime juice to British sailors to prevent scurvy. The benefits of citrus juice were well known at the time thanks to the acute observations of surgeon James Lind who noticed that the cabbage eating Dutch had fewer problems with scurvy. Limes were used over lemons due to limes being more readily available from Britain's own Caribbean colonies. The term is thought to have originated in the Caribbean in the 1880s. A false etymology is that it is a derivative of "Corr-blimey" ("God blind me!"). Common Color: Yellow or Yellow-Green Benefit: Tropic of Capricorn (Ex): The confection is unaffected by hot or humid weather and does not need to make a Fortitude check to resist heat exhaustion if it is receiving its normal water ration. Drawback: Tropic of Cancer (Ex): The confection does performs poorly in cold weather and suffers a -2 Fortitude save to resist frost bite or cold energy based attacks. Favored Class: Swashbuckler (or Ranger) Orange: The orange is an ancient Asian citrus fruit connected a harbinger of good luck. The Emperor of China distributed oranges to his court on the second day after New Years. It is also used as a Chrismas gift for European children. An orange is the name given to a tawny roundle, a roundle being any circular ball of color or metal used in heraldry. It is supposed to represent a tennis ball. Tennis was once a game played strictly by royalty and nobles and the orange indicates that the bearer was a member of that class. Common Color: Orange Benefit: Mandarin’s Favor (Ex): The confection gains a +1 luck bonus his armor class bonus. Drawback: Strident Service (Ex): The deeds of this creature draw the notice of others. Any attempt to Spot or Listen for the confection gains a +2 bonus. Favored Class: Knight (or Paladin) Peach: A peach is a fleshy, fuzzy fruit that grows around a large, hard seed. See the peach as a symbol for fertility, immortality, secrets, and beauty. The hard seed shell resembles a treasure chest that guards the seed of the plant from ingestion. Peaches originally came from China but spread to Europe and throughout the world. Slang meanings of a peach are a beautiful woman, a good person, general excellence, or a treasured skin complexion. In Chinese mythology, the peach confers immortality on the heavenly court that eat it. Common Color: Peach (Yellow-Orange) Benefit: Ageless Beauty (Ex): The confection suffers no STR, DEX, or CON penalty from aging. Drawback: Internal Alchemy (Ex): The confection must maintain its health by a rigorous series of exercises, diet, and meditation. Every day the character must exercise for 1d4 hours, meditate for 1d4 hours, and must eat seasonal foods (no trail rations or other preserves). Failure to maintain the regimen results in a cumulative “-1 penalty” to all saving throws per day the routine is violated. Each day the routine is faithfully maintained will reduce this penalty by one. Favored Class: Sorcerer Peppermint: Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is a hybrid mint, a cross between watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). It is native to western, central and southern Europe from the British Isles east to southern Scandinavia and western Russia, south to Iberia, and southeast to the Balkans, being found wild occasionally with its parent species. Peppermint, like many spices and herbs, is believed to have medicinal properties when consumed. It is said that it helps against upset stomachs, inhibits the growth of certain bacteria, and can help soothe and relax muscles when inhaled or applied to the skin. Other health benefits are attributed to the high manganese, vitamin C and vitamin A content; as well as trace amounts of various other nutrients such as fibre, iron, calcium, folate, potassium, tryptophan, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, riboflavin, and copper. Common Color: Red and White Benefit: Mint Fresh (Ex): The confection gains a +4 bonus to save against disease. Drawback: Freshly Minted (Ex): The creation of this confection is tightly controlled and allowed little tolerance for deviation. The thought processes of this creature are rigid and uncreative. This creature suffers a -4/-1 penalty to all skills ranks earned due per Hit Die or character level. Favored Class: Ardent (or Cleric) Pineapple: The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant and fruit (multiple), native to Uruguay, Brazil, Puerto Rico, or Paraguay. Unless the arms described were granted in connection with a pineapple growing country, the term pineapple, in heraldry, actually refers to a pinecone. The pinecone is symbolic of the inexhaustible abundance of life in nature, burgeoning life and fecundity. The association is derived from the fact that the pine tree remained green in the winter when others appeared dead. But real pineapples also exist in the armory as a slang term for hand grenades. Occasionally pineapples were granted as a symbol of distinguished service in a country where such fruit grew. Common Color: Yellow or Waxy White Benefit: Explosive Punch (Su): With a single successful unarmed attack the confection can inflict an additional amount of “force” damage equal to its CHA modifier. The explosive punch is a full round action and takes the place of any other actions during that round. Drawback: Incensed Combatant (Ex): During a combat encounter, the candy will fly into a frothing fit in which it suffers 1 HP lose per round until the combat encounter is concluded. Favored Class: Totemist (or Druid) Pomegranate: The pomegranate is the true “forbidden fruit”, and is one fruit never used for religious sacrifice. The reason is because it is considered to be too seductive. If you see a pomegranate on an old sash or cap of office in an ancient painting, the meaning has nothing to do with the seeds of this fruit, rather, it is saying or maybe praying to keep the title or rank from generation to generation in the same family. The seeds are symbolic of birth in Chinese in two ways. The Chinese word “zi” means both seeds and sons. The Chinese word “shi” means pomegranate seeds as well as generation, poetry, ten, and is a gender neutral pronoun for a scholar or monk. Common Color: Red or Blue-Red Benefit: Generation (Ex): This creature confection is extremely prolific. Anywhere it goes it is likely to encounter a friendly relative or family contact. For PC this means that any diverse community of encountered, there is a NPC that is a “friendly” relative of the character. For non-sentient creatures this means that these creatures hunt in larger than normal group (10+) in the area. Drawback: Blood Feud (Ex): Your large family has many enemies and you will often attract their notice while traveling. Your ignorance of ongoing feuds can be dangerous and costly. Every time you enter a new community, when you meet a family contact you must make a successful Gather Information check (DC: 10 plus your current HD total). Failure results in reigniting a simmering feud that will make the rest of the town hostile to your character. Favored Class: Archivist (or Bard) Nut: Nut is a general term for the dry seed or fruit of some plants. While a wide variety of dried seeds and fruits are called nuts, only a certain number of them are considered by biologists to be true nuts. Nuts are an important source of nutrition for both humans and wildlife. The peanut, or Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), is a species in the legume family Fabaceae native to South America, Mexico and Central America and is the most commonly used “nut” in candy. Evidence demonstrates that peanuts were domesticated in prehistoric times in Peru. Archeologists have thus far dated the oldest specimens to about 7,600 years before the present. Cultivation spread as far as Mesoamerica where the Spanish conquistadors found the tlalcacahuatl (Nahuatl="smirf cacao"=peanut, whence Mexican Spanish, cacahuate and French, cacahuète) being offered for sale in the marketplace of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City). The plant was later spread worldwide by European traders. Cultivation in the English colonies of North America was popularized by African Americans, who brought the Kikongo word "goober". Common Color: Honey brown Benefit: Candy Shell (Ex): Your character gains a +1 Natural armor bonus for every 3 HD it possesses. Drawback: Nutty (Ex): Your character has a fetish for a household object or animal that is impractical for an adventurer. Every class level you gain you must add an extremely rare, valuable, or enchanted fetish object to your personal possessions or suffer a -1 morale penalty to all d20 rolls per fetish object required. The same penalty applies if your collection is stolen or destroyed until you restore it. Some common examples of fetish objects are spoons, clocks, musical instruments, paintings, mice, cats, bells. Armor, clothing, jewelry, and weapons do not qualify as fetish objects since they provide an obvious benefit to the confection. NPC creature confections will value junk rather than treasure useful or valuable to the adventurers. Favored Class: Wizard Strawberry: A strawberry bush signifies perpetuity, or that the just man shall never wither. Madam Tallien, a great figure of the French Revolution, who was nicknamed Our Lady of Thermidor, used to take baths full of strawberries to keep the full radiance of her skin. Fontenelle, centenarian writer and gourmet of the 18th century, considered his long life was due to the strawberries he used to eat. “Strawberry blonde” is a light reddish-blonde or orange hair color, a cocktail made with vodka, brandy, and cola, and a breed of sunflowers. A “strawberry” is slang for a skinned knee or elbow. Common Color: Pink or Rose Red Benefit: Well Preserved (Ex): Double the normal lifespan of the creature Drawback: Strawberry Blonde (Ex): The confection is a constant source of gossip. Anyone wishingto learn about it gains a +2 bonus on Gather Information, Bardic Knowledge, and Sense Motive checks. Favored Class: Favored Soul (or Rogue) Raspberry: Raspberries are an important commercial fruit crop, widely grown in all temperate regions of the world. The earlier form of the word “raspis berry” (1548), possibly is derived from raspise "a sweet rose-colored wine" (c.1460), from Anglo-Latin. The slang meaning of raspberry as a "rude sound" (1890) is shortening of raspberry tart, rhyming slang for fart and is likely based on the word “razz” which mean to hassle or annoy. Common Color: Dark Red Benefit: Razz (Ex): The creature can provoke rash attacks from its opponents. As a full round action the creature can make an infuriating taunt. The target of the taunt must make a Will save (DC= 10 + CHA modifier of the raspberry + 50% the total HD of the raspberry) or the target will make a wild swing at the confection (+2 Damage but -2 AC for the round) as its next action. If the wild swing misses the sly raspberry can immediately make an attack of opportunity on the target for which the target is denied any AC dodge bonus. If the raspberry has any sneak attack damage bonus it can apply this damage on a successful strike. Drawback: Tarted Up (Ex): The raspberry is emotionally and mentally blind to subtlety. This creature suffers a -2 penalty to Disguise, Decipher Script, and Search checks. Favored Class: Spell Thief (or Rogue) Vanilla Bean: Vanilla is named after the green sheath that encases the seeds. Vanilla beans must be dried to recreate their strong flavor. The first to cultivate vanilla were the Totonac people, who inhabit the Mazantla Valley on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the present-day state of Veracruz. According to Totonac mythology, the tropical orchid was born when Princess Xanat, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded. Where their blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical orchid grew. The current largest producer of vanilla is Madagascar. Vanilla is slang for plain or ordinary since vanilla is the most common flavor of ice cream. Many deserts that claim to be vanilla actually use artificial flavor instead of the expensive vanilla bean extract. Common Color: White or Off White Benefit: Blend Into the Crowd (Su): A vanilla character can blend seamlessly into a crowd to hide from anyone looking for it. This ability is magical since no mundane search will detect the creature so long it remains in crowded areas. This ability will not function in areas with less than 30 people and requires an average density of 2 people per 10x10 feet. This usually means that the ability only functions in urban streets, crowded rooms, and civic events. Drawback: Delicate Constitution (Ex): Vanilla confections suffer a -2 Fortitude save versus diseases. Favored Class: Factotum (or Rogue) Watermelon: The image of a melon is a symbol of good luck. The watermelon named after the watery thin juice that fills it. Africa is believed to be the source of Watermelons, but they were grown in Vietnam and China before 100 BC. Jars of watermelon seeds were sealed within the Burial tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs. Unique varieties of watermelon include square watermelons, seedless watermelons, yellow watermelons, orange-glo, moon and stars watermelon, and Russian melitopolski watermelons. A pumpkin has a wildly different taste but has the same game statistics. Common Color: Pink or Red Benefit: Seed Spitter (Su): This confection can fire a stream of seeds at its enemies once per day. The seeds effect a 15ft cone in front of the character and render anyone within range “dazed” for one round if they fail a Will Save (DC:10 + CHA modifier + 50% HD of the confection). Drawback: Obese (Ex): The confection suffers a -10ft penalty to speed and can not run at any time. Favored Class: Warlock (or Sorcerer) Choose a Candy Texture (Choose only One) The candy texture reflects the type of candy it is and provides guidelines to the nature of the creature it symbolizes. The candy’s texture is achieved by cooking the sugar it is made from. Hard skinned monsters become hard candies which are made by cooking the sugar at high temperatures. Fleshy creatures become soft candies which are cooked at lower temperatures. Unlike normal creatures, creature confections will melt if exposed to heat or boiling water but can often be reshaped if allowed to cool. Rather than a pool of blood or a pile of bones these creatures will leave a pile of crumbs or a pool of syrup behind when they are killed. Bubble Gum: Bubble Gum is soft and elastic when warm and hard when cold. Favors: Fruit flavors and Peppermint Sugar Consistency: Soft Ball but dries out to Hard Crack Example: A candy spider may spin a bubble gum web. Butterscotch: Butterscotch is a softer form of Toffee flavored with vanilla Flavors: Butterscotch Sugar Consistency: Soft Crack Example: A butterscotch “clay” golem may guard a candy cleric Brittle: Brittle is hard but shatters with a hard blow. Flavors: Any but most commonly peanut Sugar Consistency: Hard Crack Example: A Peanut Brittle fortress is the home of the Ninjabread Clan. Cake: Cakes are baked in an oven and allowed to rise like sugary bread. Flavors: Any due to frosting or fillings Sugar Consistency: Firm Ball Example: A carrot cake cloaker drops from the ceiling Cookies/Biscuits: Cookies and biscuits can be soft or hard but are generally flat. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Hard Ball Example: Goblinsnaps frost the town. Cotton Candy/Candy Floss: Cotton Candy is spun up sugar crystals. Flavors: Any but commonly none Sugar Consistency: Thread Example: A cotton candy specter floats across the moors. Fudge: Fudge is most commonly flavored with chocolate but other favors are also used. Flavors: Any but Cocoa Beans are most common Sugar Consistency: Soft Ball Gum Drop: A gum drop is a jelly coated in sugar crystals. Flavors: Fruit Flavors Sugar Consistency: Hard Ball Ice Cream/ Gelato /Sherbet: Ice cream is made from milk, cream, and sugar. Sherbert has no milk. Gelatto is an Italian variation of ice cream. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Hard Ball only at freezing temperatures. Thread otherwise. Jawbreaker: A jawbreaker is formed from multiple coatings of different colors. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Hard Crack Nougat/Jelly Beans/Gummi: Nougats are often flavored with chocolate or caramel. Jelly Beans and Gummies are soft and chewy fruit flavored candies. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Hard Ball Licorice: Licorice is often shaped into ropes and cords. Only black licorice is made with the flavor of a licorice seed. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Firm Ball Lollipop/Candy Cane: A lollipop is a hard candy wrapped around a stick. A candy cane is a hard brittle candy shaped like a stick or bent into a hook. Suckers are lollipops without a stick. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Hard Crack Ice Pop: An ice pop is frozen water, sugar, and flavoring. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Hard Crack at freezing temperatures. Thread otherwise Salt Water Taffee: Salt water taffee comes in a variety of flavors and is extremely chewy. Flavors: Any Sugar Consistency: Soft Crack Hard Toffee: Toffee is very hard and must be suck on to soften it. Flavors: Toffee Sugar Consistency: Hard Crack Sugar Stages (Determined by Candy Type) The final texture of candy depends on the sugar concentration. As the syrup is heated, it boils, water evaporates, the sugar concentration increases, and the boiling point rises. A given temperature corresponds to a particular sugar concentration. In general, higher temperatures and greater sugar concentrations result in hard, brittle candies, and lower temperatures result in softer candies. |
| M-bark02-14-08, 02:34 PM | When I first saw this thread, I honestly thought it had something to do with the Powerpuff Girls. :P Converting PCs (and NPCs) into candy sure sounds like a nice idea.
