| SasoriSama06-24-07, 07:14 PM | Hello again all! Sorry to continue to bother you all! :P I've gotten my fiancee playing, and she's starting a ranger to head into "The World's Largest Dungeon", which is fine and good, but we're not sure what race to use for her character. She'll still need LA+0, but the Darkvision is a must, and Dex is her main priority for her character. Please feel free to through in any ideas you all might have! Thanks! |
| Dragonprime06-24-07, 07:36 PM | Hmmmm, you want high dex, dex, darkvision, and no LA. I made a race recently that fits all these requierements. Check it out (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=12836089#post12836089). If you want to go for the standard races then there's the dwarf. No bonus to Dex, but darkvision is there. |
| DreamerInsane06-24-07, 07:36 PM | Let her play a Hobgoblin. They're pitiful for La +1, and pretty well balanced at LA +0. They have a bonus to Dex and Darkvision. |
| Salla06-24-07, 07:48 PM | Dwarf. Darkvision, no DEX penalty, bonus to CON, penalty to the Ranger's major dump stat, and proficiency with a double-weapon, if you want to TWF instead of archery. |
| Bedlamtom06-24-07, 07:59 PM | I played a great half-orc ranger. Use the str mod to enhance your composit str bow. |
| blackjackg06-25-07, 01:05 AM | Whisper Gnome? +2 Dex, Darkvision, and a few other bonuses that a Dex-heavy ranger could enjoy. |
| Bedlamtom06-25-07, 01:12 AM | Where is the Whisper Gnome from? |
| AZNsupermarket06-25-07, 01:24 AM | Where is the Whisper Gnome from? Races of Stone Whisper Gnome: -2 Str +2 Dex +2 Con -2 Cha, small, 30 ft., silence 1/day (Cha 10 or better ghost sound, mage hand, message 1/day), rogue, humanoid (gnome), races of stone pg.96 |
| ElberethSilverleaf06-25-07, 02:34 AM | 1/2 Drow perhaps? |
| Forgember06-25-07, 04:29 AM | Dwarf! Best class race combo in the game baby! Though if she is going the Archer route I would suggest taking Crossbow instead of Bow for better dwarven flavor. Switch out the regular Range Style feats with Crossbow Sniper, Rapid Reload and Ranged Mastery. This style of Dwarven Crossbow Sniper also lets you focus on Dex over Str alot more than if you used a bow, just remember to pack Tumbling Bolts for the extra 2 Dmg (half range). |
| Polaris06-25-07, 04:42 AM | Goblin Scout (or ranger) also does very well with what you want in the WLD especially if you concentrate on archery. Dwarf is of course the obvious choice, but given that Darkvision is a must and you want LA+0 your best choices seem to be: Dwarf Whisper Gnome (if allowed...many DMs won't) Goblin (which most DMs will allow from a power-perspective) Other decent choices but definately second tier would be: Half-Orc Half-Drow Neither of this has power-issues, but both are rather weak races to put it mildly. -Polaris Edit PS: Goblins get 30' movement, darkvision, -2 Str, -2 Cha, +2 Dex, +4 Move-Silently, +4 Ride, and are small. IMHO they are second only to whisper-gnomes for ranged rogue types especially in the WLD. |
| The Livewire06-25-07, 07:28 AM | I'd add Deepwyrm 1/2 drow to the list, myself. |
| Ogg06-25-07, 09:59 AM | If you want the more unusual Kobold or Goblin. If she doesn't want to go Dwarf you can always suggest Deep Halfing from the MM. You'd basically loose the climb, jump & mov silently and pick up darkvision & stonecutting from dwarf. A decent trade off. Plus you have the halfling racial adujustments instead of dwarf. |
| Darth Sephiroth06-25-07, 11:18 PM | Depending upon starting gold, you could start with a graft to gain darkvision |
| Polaris06-25-07, 11:24 PM | Depending upon starting gold, you could start with a graft to gain darkvision If I understood SasoriSama correctly, the character in question would be starting at first level playing in the World's Largest Dungeon. As I recall, that means that characters start with starting gold/equipment only (so the graft is probably out). -Polaris |
| Von_Harbringer06-25-07, 11:32 PM | I like dwarves but I have more fun playing my half-orc rogue. I took two-weapon fighting. I used the point buy and his stats were str 16, dex 16, con 14, int 12, wis 8, cha 6 :D . |
| Dragonprime06-25-07, 11:53 PM | Half orc may not be the best option if you want good spellcasting to come from the ranger. That -2 penalty to wisdom can be a real problem. |
| Von_Harbringer06-25-07, 11:58 PM | Half orc may not be the best option if you want good spellcasting to come from the ranger. That -2 penalty to wisdom can be a real problem. Not sure if you're talking about another setting but PHB half-orc is +2 str, -2 int, -2 cha, full blooded orcs get -2 wis. |
| Polaris06-26-07, 12:05 AM | Half orc may not be the best option if you want good spellcasting to come from the ranger. That -2 penalty to wisdom can be a real problem. As Von_Harbringer stated, the PHB Half-Orc doesn't have a -2 penalty to wisdom. However for a rogue, I'd be very concerned about that -2 Int since a solid rogue lives and dies by his or her intelligence. In fact Intelligence (not Dexterity) is probably the most important stat for the prototypical dungeon-delving rogue since search, disable device, and open locks are all Int based AND rogues need a lot of skills (even more than the class provides) and Int provides skill points. -Polaris |
| WizO_Cat06-26-07, 12:14 AM | A deep halfling might be an option. The -2 on strength does sting, but you get the +2 on dexterity, darkvision, and small size modifiers. |
| jaelis06-26-07, 12:23 AM | The downside for a dwarf is that you'll be in light armor and thus have limited movement. Not that there aren't some corresponding benefits too. I think half-orc is also a decent choice though, if she's interested in the TWF route. She'd be slightly less of a skill monkey, but usually rangers can live with that. Meanwhile, pumping Str is really effective for a TWF ranger, especially if you go with a smart combo like greatsword+armor spikes. But now that I see she wants a dex-based build, a half-orc wouldn't make much sense. Goblin is a great choice. |
| MikeN06-26-07, 12:25 AM | Wood Elf with the Otherworldly feat (Forgotten Realms). +2 Str/Dex, -2 Con/Int Need to be from a certain region, but easily done. Feat grants you Darkvision 60', outsider type, and some other minor bonuses. |
| Von_Harbringer06-26-07, 12:29 AM | If the DM allows different races that have +1 ECL tiefling or aasimar may be something worth looking at. |
| Polaris06-26-07, 12:31 AM | Wood Elf with the Otherworldly feat (Forgotten Realms). +2 Str/Dex, -2 Con/Int Need to be from a certain region, but easily done. Feat grants you Darkvision 60', outsider type, and some other minor bonuses. I forgot about that one. You've have to be from Evereska IIRC (the Isle to which the Surface Elves retreated). It's worth noting that this feat also gives you proficiency with all simple and martial weapons. That's redunant if you are a ranger. It's quite nice if you are a rogue, cleric, or scout. -Polaris |
