Zaistars69 04-06-07, 12:18 PM	Are the sun elves the same as the Grey elves just as the moon elves are the same as the high elves? If I remember right all of the other elven types have the same racial ability adjustments and such as the ones in the MM just with different names. The aquatic elf (appears in the races of Faerun) has the same racial adj as the ones in the SRD and MM. It seems like the newer material should supersede the old 3.0 stuff unless I'm missing a 3.5 FR book (which is easily possible).

The confusion dates back to the fact that their are less 10 races ever published by wotc with a bonus to int and LA +0; three of them are elven sub-races. With the plethora of elven sub-races, this will of course lead to some confusion. The three elven sub-races with a bonus to int are: Sun Elf: +2 int -2 con (Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting) Gray Elf: +2 dex +2 int -2 con -2 str (Monster Manual) Fire Elf: +2 dex +2 int -2 con -2 cha (Unearthed Arcana) Note that they all have different stats, have different names, and come from different books.

Gray elves are great, but I have always had a predisposition for fire elves because of the whole fire instead of hair thing (it just looks so cool!:cool:). From my own experiences, I have found that sun elves are almost never a better choice than fire elves or gray elves.

The Forgotten Realms campaign does not have Grey Elves (as per the MM); Sun Elves are the FR equivalent to Grey Elves just as Moon Elves are the equivalent to High Elves (FR doesn't have "High Elves" either, they have Moon Elves which just so happen to have the same racial abilities of the Core-D&D "High Elf"). To be technical about it, a Sun Elf should not be allowed in non-FR campaigns, just like a Grey Elf shouldn't be allowed IN an FR campaign.

Sun Elves and Grey elves used to be the same stats back in 1e/2e ... similar type of culture too (stuck up, haughty) the analogy went something like this: Grey Elf ... Sun Elf ... Silvenesti Elf (your uppity-elfs) High Elf ... Moon Elf ... Qualinesti Elf (your not-so-uppity elfs) (that was from the 2e Book of Elves)
