What template would you recommend for a human cleric?

Only one that doesn't have an LA of any sort. Cleric is juuuuust fine by itself. :)

As a caster, I would warn you to don't pick templates - I don't reckon one with LA +0, the majority of them being LA +1 or more.

For +1 LA, Draconic Creature is interesting. +2 to STR, CON and CHA (key abilities for a melee cleric) and other goodies; better yet if your DM applies the template bonuses AFTER the point/dice distribution :)

-Aasimar (not a template, but +1 LA vs a human)

-Phrenic Template (if you're not against psionic: +2 LA, +2 INT, +2 WIS, +4 CHA, many psi-like abilities)

-Take 1st level as a bard, it's equivalent to a +1 LA; you get Bardic Knowledge (which you can improve with 5 ranks of Knowledge History), many skills ranks to spend in cleric skills, access to some arcane spells (which mean you can use arcane wands), a good Ref and Will save.

-Half-fey: +2LA, +2 DEX, -2 CON, +2 WIS, +4 CHA, DR 5/Cold Iron, Wings, and many spell-like abilities.

*gasp* I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned the Saint template yet. Of all the templates worth taking, this is by far the best.

Book of Exalted Deeds, around page 182 or something.

Wis to AC, some neat SLA, CON and CHA bonuses, extra damage against evil outsiders and undead, DR/evil, fast healing, and a **** load of resistances.

My favourite template in the game.

I think the reason many people don't suggest it is that you need to be exalted in order to get it, a high order for many players, and typically the only way to get it is not "Hey, I'm starting as a saint, deal Mr. DM" but rather, you need to actually talk with him, get your 3 exalted feats (of which there are precious few good ones) and do miraculous deeds.

And sometimes a evil/neutral cleric could be funnier than a very goodie one :)

better yet if your DM applies the template bonuses AFTER the point/dice distribution :)

Of course any DM will apply them AFTER the point/dice distribution, that is how you do that sort of thing! I will refer you to the DMG p169 on alternate character building.

I suggest the Saint template. In my own personal experiences, any time I play a good cleric I play them like they've already achieved sainthood, so the template was just a bunch of power to back it up.

Necropolitan.
And be evil.
You can heal yourself and damage you enemies.

Screw the party, you are evil.
Or you can make them take Tomb-Tainted Soul.

God Blooded template from MM5.......AWESOME! just make sure when you make the variant thing for a specific deity that you want, make sure you do the whole DR 5/magic instead of i think it was DR 10/-(whatever you want) because ifyou go with the DR 10, as soon as this takes away 40 points of damage that would've been dealt to you, you loose the entire template, if you go with the DR 5/magic, it doesn't.
