| the_poison_elf08-04-07, 04:58 PM | From an infamous (and now forgotten) thread last night, I bring you the Porcelain Creature template. Porcelain Creature Template "Porcelain Creature" is a template that can be applied to any living, corporeal creature. Size and Type: Size is unchanged. Type changes to Construct. Do not recalculate base attack, saves, or skills. Hit Dice: Both class and racial hit dice increase to d10 if they were not allready. This applies to any future hit dice gained as well. If the base creature has to gains hit dice larger than d10, apply the larger die. Speed: Land speed remains unchanged, but any Flight or Swim speeds the base creature has are halved due to being denser than the base creature. Armor Class: Natural armor improves to +4 (this does not stack with any natural armor bonus the base creature may have had). Special Qualities: Brilliant Allure: As a standard action a porcelain creature can draw upon it's qualities as a piece of art. Attackers must make a Willpower saving throw equal to 10 + HD + Charisma modifier, or else find themselves unable to attack the porcelain creature until it takes a direct action of violence against them. Vulnerability to Sonic: Porcelain creatures take twice as much damage as normal from sonic attacks. Damage Reduction 5/Bashing Low-Light Vision Darkvision out to 60ft Construct Traits Abilities: Altered from the base creature as follows: +2 Str, +2 Dex, +2 Wis, +2 Cha. As constructs, porcelain creatures have no constitution score, and recieve extra hit points based on thier size. Porcelain creatures retain thier intelligence and independence. Skills: Porcelain creatures treat all Craft skills as in-class skill. They also gain a +4 racial bonus with one Craft skill. Level Adjustment: +2 A construct designed by and for those with an artistic flair, Porcelain Creatures are very rare. Unlike thier Golem bretheren, the creating of a Porcelain Creature requires definate artistic talent both with sculpture and paint. Many of the arcane scholars that create these creature are also proficient in any other artistic magical expressions. To create a Porcelain Creature, the character must have the Craft Construct feat. The body is formed from raw clay and other materials, combined with rare oils and powders costing 3,000gp. Crafting the body requires a Craft (Sculpting) or Craft (Pottery) check at DC 20, as well as a Craft (Painting) check at DC 20. Spells: animate objects, commune, resurrection. Minimum CL 11. Base price 25,000gp, plus an additional 2,500gp per hit die (minimum 1HD). And here's a pair of sample Porcelain Creatures: Porcelain Elf, 1st-Level Fighter Size/Type: Medium Construct Hit Dice: 1d10 + 20 [25hp] Initiative: +2 Speed: 30ft Armor Class: 16 [+2 Dex, +4 NA] BAB/Grapple: +1/+3 Attack: Longsword +4 (1d8+2) or Longbow +4 (1d8) Full Attack: Longsword +4 (1d8+2) or Longbow +4 (1d8) Space/Reach: 5ft./5ft. | Tuah08-04-07, 05:23 PM | I like the idea, but even someone not proficient with an unarmed strike could still break them, couldn't they? Or do I just not understand constructs? ^^; |
| malykoth08-04-07, 05:26 PM | I like it...but I'm not sure about the Dex increase...after all, porcelain isn't known as a very flexible material. Most tea cups just sort of sit there. The Charisma increase makes good sense, considering the artistic skills needed to create one, but why the increase to Wisdom? (not against it, just curious about your reasonings). |
| the_poison_elf08-04-07, 06:08 PM | I like the idea, but even someone not proficient with an unarmed strike could still break them, couldn't they? Or do I just not understand constructs? ^^; Well, with a +4 NA, Damage Reduction, and the large hit dice/construct bonus HP, they're not too shabby. Just not overly impressive. Figure a 1st level human sorcerer. Now compare that to a 1st level Porcelain sorcerer. Higher AC, stronger spellcasting, higher HD (s10 instead of d4), and 20 extra HP for being a Medium Construct (instead of a possible Con penalty). Now granted, a simple Shout or Shatter spell is going to cause havoc with Porcelain Creatures under, say, 5HD. But then again, that's what Brilliant Allure is for; your average fighter is going to be magically compelled not to destroy such a work of art. I like it...but I'm not sure about the Dex increase...after all, porcelain isn't known as a very flexible material. Most tea cups just sort of sit there. The Charisma increase makes good sense, considering the artistic skills needed to create one, but why the increase to Wisdom? (not against it, just curious about your reasonings). What, you never saw Beauty and the Beast? Those teacups can cut a rug. ;) Actually though, that's a good point. Though I also imagined these creatures as being flexible in unnatural ways; bending oddly, since they technically don't have bones or internal organs. And they can take "artistic license" as to how flexible they are. ;) Well, the Cha and Wis raises have to do with them being living peices of art. I imagine that if the Mona Lisa was sentient, the smiling lady would spend about as much time contemplating art as she does contemplating what it means to be art, or what "art" even means. |
