What about other settings? Can you pull one of the Elves out of MM1? What about the enviromental books? How about Third Party source Material? Or 'Dragon'? Can you use Races with LA+1,2,3,4,...? Out of all of it I would say Spellscales from Races of the Dragon make great Sorcerers. |
| snakeman83011-15-07, 03:25 PM | Kobolds. Rite of Draconic Passage is just awesome. Putting yourself one level hihger on spellcasting is incredibly nice, especially on a scorcerer. Notice I haven't even mentioned Dragonwrought cheese. |
| FrostWolf11-15-07, 07:01 PM | Catfolk are good. speed, dex, and cha bonuses. |
| YamiShinobi11-15-07, 07:28 PM | either an adult catfolk or a venerable dragonwrought kobold catfolk +4 dex +2 cha Dragonwrought Kobold Str-4 Dex+2 Con-2 (Venerable after this parenthesis) +3 in +3 wis and +3 cha capable of taking epic feats at level 1 ( at level 1 epic toughness, at level 3, extended lifespan) |
| YamiShinobi11-15-07, 07:33 PM | out of my suggestions, i would go with the "Venerable" Dragonwrought Kobold epic feats at level 1, no level adjustment or racial hit die but this comes fom venerable age the cheese is good but broken |

If role-play is more then just a minor feature in the game, then the changling could be fun. The human gives you the customize feature with the feat. With gnomes their suitable only if you plan to focus on illusions as a Sorcerer. Elf, the bow profs are decent at times, thou not a reliable means of combat due to the 1/2 bab progression. |
| FrostHammer11-16-07, 01:41 AM | Catfolk is great with LA buy-off. |
| CrimsonDeath11-16-07, 01:46 AM | Of the options mentioned by the OP, I'd say Sorcerers are feat-starved enough that Human is probably the best option. (But then, Human is the best race for almost any class.) If you'd like to focus on Illusions, Gnome is probably better. They have a racial ability that's as good as Spell Focus: Illusion (and stacks with it if you make room for it in your build), plus Small size (AC and attack bonus) and a Constitution bonus (more HP), both excellent bonuses for a primary spellcaster. Plus, if you have access to Races of Stone, you can go into Shadowcraft Mage (although Wizard or Beguiler is probably a better base). The Elven weapon proficiencies may look good, but a longbow isn't a lot better than a light crossbow at level 1, and by level 12 (when the longbow is finally strictly better for a Sorcerer) you won't be using a weapon anyway (unless it's a gish build). Meanwhile, that Constitution penalty hurts forever. If you're asking for the best race, period, I'd say Kobold. And no, not because I think a Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold qualifies for Epic feats. (I don't buy that the Dragonwrought Kobold is a True Dragon. They have the Dragon type and age categories, and one may even argue that they "gain [...] greater power as they age", but they do not "gain more abilities [...] as they age", part of the defining characteristic of True Dragons according to the Monster Manual.) No, I'd say Kobolds because of the Greater Draconic Rite of Passage (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20060420a), which lets them get new levels of spells at the same rate as a Wizard. |
| FrostHammer11-16-07, 01:52 AM | If you're focusing on Illusions, why not go with Beguiler? |
| JulesCARV11-16-07, 02:10 AM | I'd go human. Maybe an Aundairan human with some low-level connections to the Arcane Congress (if you want to eventually go into Mage of the Arcane Order). Gnome could also be good -- heck, you could be an Aundairan gnome (perhaps for the same reasons you might be an Aundairan human) with a patriotic chip on his shoulder who gets really testy if people assume he's from Zilargo (maybe he thinks Zils are backstabbing scumbags or something, not like decent, upstanding Aundairans like him). Or perhaps a somewhat older (maybe middle aged or old) Karrnathi human who was once a mighty cleric (maybe level 5 or so, with animate dead) of the Blood of Vol, but lost his faith when he discovered the connections between the Blood of Vol and the Order of the Emerald Claw, so now he doesn't believe in anything and is trying to build up his magic repertoire again without faith, but has gotten knocked back to level 1 sorcerer, basically. That was an idea I had for a Karrnathi sorcerer. (http://forums.gleemax.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-752649.html) |
