| nightmaredragon10-06-06, 07:23 PM | Rashasa #5 and myself have collaborated and created a race all our own... may I present... The Keloth A creature with a very bizarre anatomy stands before you. Its face is featureless except for a pair of large red eyes and a pair of feelers like a moth’s. Its chest is dominated by a mouth filled with sharp teeth the size of scalpels. Its skin is covered in tiny scales and slightly wet to the touch, and a tail drags behind it. PAST: Keloth are a race of alien creatures created by the mad elder evil Shothotugg. The Eater of Worlds had begun to feed faster than it could move to consume new things. It realized that it was eating itself into a corner and decided to create a race of worshippers on the material plane. Thus the Keloth were born, charged to feed their god and creator. MOTIVES: Keloth were created solely to feed their god. It dominates their life, the search for food for their progenitor. Their secondary goals mostly consist of killing the other eaters of their underground world, the Mind Flayers and the Grell. RELATIONS: Keloth are at odds with any creature whose head is edible. Their constant search for food puts them on bad terms with Mind Flayers and Grell, who are competition for food in the underground. However, they have truce with the aboleths, who share their respect for Shothotugg. The Keloth provide the Aboleths with the slime necessary to easily reproduce, otherwise, they undergo a painful prosess that is risky and much slower. LIFE: Keloth enter life through one of two ways. The way their god intended them to reproduce is long, painful, and asexual. It involves a Keloth entering a six-week long period, at the end of which the Keloth regurgitates a new, fully-grown Keloth. During the six-week period, the Keloth swells to twice its size, becoming totally immobile. The other method involves aboleth slime and half the time. The Keloth's life is forfeitted in the process, drowned in the pool of slime, but no less than 1d6 new Keloth spawn from the corpse. Keloth are technically immortal unless eliminated by violence, disease, or poison. Keloth transformed into undead are ghouls, ghasts, or vampires. ADVENTURES: The odd Keloth adventures to bring glory to their creator and locating new and strange beings to yup, you guessed it, EAT. Some odd individuals also quest to spread the word of Shothotugg to other races who might worship him. Thus most human cannibal tribes are formed. RACIAL TRAITS Medium Aberration Base Speed 30 feet Bite 1d8: If this is used to perform a coup de gras, the target's head is bitten off and its soul sent to shothotugg. The target may not be returned to life except by a wish or miracle spell. The Keloth gains 1 temporary hit point per two HD of the target. Hit points gained in this way last for ten minutes per hit point gained. A keloth must have its armor fitted or lose its bite attack. Having armor fitted adds 1/25 of the armor's base price to its cost. -2 on Climb checks and checks made to avoid being disarmed. Keloth are covered with a layer of saliva that makes them somewhat slippery. +2 on Escape Artist checks and grapple checks made to escape a grapple. Keloth are covered with a layer of saliva that makes them somewhat slippery. +3 on Spellcraft checks made to identify potions. Keloth take only a -2 penalty when using weapons to deal nonlethal damage. Keloth are practiced at taking captives alive to be ceremonially eaten later. For some strange and unknown reason, Keloth are succeptable to spells, spell like abilities and supernatural abilities that would only work on humaniods, like charm person or enlarge person Darkvision 120ft. | Shedeo10-08-06, 03:42 AM | A very fun and interesting race indeed. However, one thing. They seem as if they would be balanced for LA +0 if they weren't of the Aberration creature type. I understand why they are of the Aberration creature type, but regardless it makes them immune to such spells as Dominate Person and Charm Person. I'd say make them Humanoid (Keloth) (Aberration). Again, I understand that Aberration isn't a subtype, but used in this way it keeps their Aberration flavor (they can still be targeted by Aberration-only abilities and whatnot.) You could also give them a +2 to Will saves made against Aberrations. Again, seems like a good race, just that one bit. |
| nightmaredragon10-08-06, 10:24 AM | What if I said they had a +1 bonus on saves against those effects, instead of immunity? |
| Shedeo10-08-06, 02:07 PM | Well, the problem is that by being an aberration, they are automatically immune to them. Charm Person says that it can only target Humanoids. Since the Keloth isn't a humanoid, they are automatically immune to them. If you wanted, make them humanoid, and give them a +2 racial bonus on all will saves. The problem isn't that you made them immune to it by choice, so much as its something that is commonly overlooked with non-humanoid races. |
| nightmaredragon10-08-06, 06:05 PM | But what if I said they were considered humanoids for Charm Person, Dominate Person, and Hold Person? New subtype (soon to be applied to this race) (Humanoid Aberration) (Insert race here) counts as a humanoid for the purpose of spells that only effect humanoids. |
| Qube10-09-06, 05:12 AM | But what if I said they were considered humanoids for Charm Person, Dominate Person, and Hold Person? New subtype (soon to be applied to this race) (Humanoid Aberration) (Insert race here) counts as a humanoid for the purpose of spells that only effect humanoids. nah, just give them an ability (like orc-blood): "for some strange and unknown reason, Keloth are succeptable to spells, spell like abilities and supernatural abilities that whould only work on humaniods, like charm person or enlarge person". the 'for some strange and unknown reason' really brings out aboriation, no? |
| nightmaredragon10-09-06, 12:14 PM | Indeed. Will do. |
