Spent a couple of hours working up a viable version of an intelligent cat as the BBEG for an adventure I'm on. Decided to throw it out here for everyone.

Awakened Cats
Caused by the interbreeding of generations of feline familiars, the Felis are on the prowl.

Personality: Felis are, in general, fascinated by the other intelligent races and magic. They are also secretive, preferring to let people believe they are simple pets.

Physical Description: Felis appear to be normal cats, though if one looks closely they can see the intelligence in their gaze.

Relations: Felis get along with anyone who admits that the Felis is amazing and is willing to give them treats. They are very protective of their friends.

Alignment: Felis can be of any alignment, but their very nature means that most are chaotic.

Felis Lands: Felis are currently few in number and are generally only found in cities with a large arcane magical presence, but some have been known to wander.

Religion: Felis generally profess to have a live and let live relationship with deities, but typically revere a minor deity known as the Cat Lord. Some are fond of Bast, though they can worship any deity.

Language: Felis have developed their own language, combining vocalization and physical movements. They are capable of learning to understand any language. Due to the inherent magic that allowed them to evolve, they are also capable of speaking languages other than their own as if the Awaken spell had been used on them.

Names: Felis are fond of dramatic names such as Frenzy or Scratch Fury, but the people who imagine they own a particular Felis generally give them names like Fluffy or Mr Tibbles.

Adventurers: Felis take to the adventuring lifestyle generally out of curiousity or wanting to help someone who has been nice to them. Many also adventure due to their fascination with magic. Most become sorcerors due to their magical heritage, but many have also become rogues.

Felis Racial Traits

-8 Strength, +4 Dexterity, and +2 Wisdom: Felis are quick, agile, and a measure of insight inherited from their familiar ancestors, but are tiny and physically weak.

Animal (Magical Beast): Felis are virtually indistinguishable from their nonintelligent counterparts.

Size - Tiny: As Tiny creatures, they receive +2 to hit, +2 AC, -8 grapple, +8 on Hide checks, but use smaller weapons than humans and their lifting and carrying capacity is 3/4 the listed amount. They also have no reach.

Base Land Speed 30'

Low-Light Vision: Felis have the Low-Light vision ability.

Scent: Felis have the Scent ability.

Racial Bonuses: +4 racial bonus on Climb, Hide (+8 in tall grass or heavy undergrowth), and Move Silently checks. +8 racial bonus on Jump and Balance checks.

Automatically start with Agile Athlete and Weapon Finesse feats

Favored Class: Sorceror

Level Adjustment +0

Level Adjustment is 0 due to the -8 to Strength and the lack of hands.

Any one have any suggestions?

Racial Substitution Levels

The felis sorcerer focuses on combining his innate magic with his

Hit Die: d4

Requirements
To take a felis sorcerer substitution level, a character must be a felis about to take the 1st, 5th, or 10th level of sorcerer.

Class Skills
Felis sorcerer substitution levels have the class skills of the standard sorcerer class plus Bluff and Move Silently.

Skill Points: 2 + Int modifier (or four times this number as a beginning character).

Class Attack Fort Ref Will
Level Bonus Save Save Save Special Spellcasting
1 +0 +0 +0 +2 Felis Magic I; Summon Familiar Same as sorcerer

5 +0 +1 +1 +3 Felis Magic II Same as sorcerer

10 +0 +0 +0 +2 Felis Magic III Same as sorcerer

Felis Magic I: A felis who focuses on bringing out their innate magic does not require hands to make somatic gestures.

Summon Familiar: This works as standard for a sorcerer but if a cat is chosen as the familiar, the Speak with Master ability is gained at 3rd level due to the nature of the felis.

Felis Magic II: A felis who takes this level learns to conceal their spellcasting by making a Bluff check equal to 10 + the level of the spell. This will obviously not conceal the origination point of spells such as Magic Missile or Lightning Bolt.

Felis Magic III: At this level, a felis sorcerer who takes this substitution level can sacrifice a 5th level spell to summon a dire lion. This ability functions as the spell Summon Nature's Ally.

Change the strength penalty to -8, nothing has odd ability adjustments in 3rd edition.

Any other suggestions on how to refine them?

This is pretty cool. I don't know if you have seen it, but there is another thread relating to cats. Some of it is moslty just for the laughs, but some of it would help out this race greatly. I am sure that Bhu, the creator of this thread, would have no qualms about you using some of his ideas.

They are very well thought out, too. For example, there is a feat in there that allows you to make attacks when you don't have reach without provoking AoO's.

Here is a link to this awesome thread: Death by Overcuteness (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=853487)

Yeah, it's a good thread. It is what made me finally get off my butt and actually write out the race instead of just keeping it in my head.

Working on some racial substitution levels, but time is at a premium right now with the holidays coming up.
