JANGO

I have always wanted this race here, so here is a race I had created in my head telling it to 2 of my friends 3 in the morning while I believe I had consumed something high in sugar or otherwise energy inducing. Otherwise Modern based, which is kinda the idea. At the same time they could fit in a fantasy setting of D&D, so I guess they are kinda versatile.

So please check out the Description first, otherwise the racial traits won't make sense. Also please tell me what you think of it, and of course why. Also tell me of any improvements that could be made.

Modern based race, that are Baboon faced, short furred, humanoid race that share a strange culture of all things. Have superb survival skills in any non-cold environment. Bodies naturally tough to take punishment if ever attacked, have natural fighting abilities with manufactured and natural weapons

Personality:They are rude, crude, in their behavior, however there personality is no more than that of a common Gnoll hunter. They all share strange habits, such as the like to hunt, but not kill their prey. They also craft strange objects to accomplish the same task as another tool, such as the creation of a trap that is Rubber circular object, that common of the modern day Car tire, attached with a rope, used to trap or trip a humanoid.(in a modern setting, they merely just steal car tires) Also like to gather trophies, to determine superiority, these usually are the head or teeth of the prey. When they catch humanoids, particularly large amounts of these humanoids, they will celebrate with a small ritual or feast, usually killing the humanoids for food during this strange celebration. Jango also hate and fear to wear metal, and as such, will never wear metal armor under any circumstances

Physical Description:Head has Baboon like facial features, crossed that with a bear, also have a nose almost like that of bears, dogs or even Gnolls. Have short light brown black or even gray colored fur on their bodies Torsos are otherwise similar to that of hyenas or bears in shape and color. They have powerful limbs, such as their hands, similar to that of a human, however their thumbs are at the opposite sides, making it look like they are backward handed, however this strangely does not impede their natural dexterity in any way. They also bear claws, as well as three talon like claw appendages at their elbows used to combo with their claw attacks, or in use when grabbed. Feet resemble that of a bear, however are slightly larger than their normal size. Since their body size can skinny or wide, they can as tall as 5ft to even as tall as 7ft. Average being about 5ft if skinny, and 6ft if wide like that of a bear(use the table for half orcs for the appropriate gender, however males starting height is 5'0). Eyes range of glowing colors of yellow,,light green, or shades of purple, otherwise brown eyed, which obviously gives off no glow of it's own. Also other than height and weight, there is little differences between the male and female.

Relations:Jangos don't really get along with anyone, even at times to harm each other. They will only trade with other humanoid races in disguise if they have entered urban territory. Due to food scarcity or to stay in disguise to otherwise overthrow the humanoids "Stone Jungle". Otherwise are allies with the Gnolls due to such close relations with them. They trade and at very rare times will fight with or against the gnoll, usually only occurring if Gnolls provoke them or food is too scarce otherwise.

Alignment:Jango have a strange way of doing about things, as such, they are not actually evil in any sort. They usually tend to be chaotic neutral, as they have no understanding or care of laws and do not necessarily do acts of good nor evil unless serves a purpose.

Jango's lands:They commonly live in jungles, thick forests, or any other non-cold climate that holds wildlife. If needed, they will even live in urban locations such as hamlets towns or big cities. Prefer the jungles since it can keep them hidden from other races while they hunt animals and other humanoid races. In a urban locale they will try to stay in the most hidden of areas, such as the sewers, or dark alleys of a city. while the Leaders, otherwise smartest of the group disguise themselves as merchants and such to trade or otherwise spy on the other humanoid races. Superiority in Jango society is based on hunting ability, thus the amount of animals or humanoids caught, which they then keep something from their prey as a trophy to prove their catch. When they hunt in groups, unless the chief is present, the whole group gets part of the glory of the catch, the one who did the most work gets the biggest part of the trophy such as the head or set of teeth it has. In their culture, they usually kill their prey if it is of small size, if food scarce, or once the chief of the village commands so. Jangos crafts are common to that of most barbarian or Indian like cultures. Commonly wielding spears with a fighting style which the spear points behind them so that they can parry before dealing a deadly blow. Also wield curved weapons, such as the Falchion, scimitar, kukri, khopesh, sickle, and other curved like weapons, even at times a scythe. Also wield The Great bow, a very big, nearly unwieldly bow without the knowing of how to control it properly like the Jango know at birth.

Religion:Jangos worship the Bandicoot species, believing them to avatars or reminince or their god. Which is a giant bandicoot with a quadruple bladed axe mace like weapon. Which they capture and never execute unless to use for a divine sacrifice to their god, even that is only done if truly needed. Also ALWAYS choose a bandicoot as their familiar if they ever get one.
( in a Modern setting, the Crash Bandicoot video game character would be the Jangos god which they would collect anything that shows him, such as his video games, costumes, toys and etc.)

Names:They names of which the jango call themselves are that of the Gnoll language, otherwise similiar to goblinoid and orc. Males usually favor the letter Z in their names while the Females favor a V in their names
Male Names:Abartz, Barchezo, Carez, Donk, Fauuz, Gariz
Female Names:Mirtivi,Bervest, Carev, Divi,Hoviti,Vieera,

Language:Other than the high pitched screams they so commonly make, their own language is that of the Gnoll. Since they are a crazed variation of the Gnoll, it is why they are naturally allies.

Adventuring:Very little reason to venture away from the tribe, but at times young Jangos are told to go off alone to scout out any new more habitable areas, or to make a name of themselves. Such Young Jangos become foolish enough to get lost or team up with other races to go off and do what they will in life. Also might spawn from knowing little about other races and may wish to know more about their ways. However Greed is rarely something that ever comes to them, unless in the form of prey trophies. Also Jangos might Adventure to get many trophies so once it comes back to it's village, it will become a potentially great chief.

JANGO Racial Traits:

Ability:+2 str, +2 dex, -2 cha

Size:Medium, despite that there bodies can be wide liket that of a bear. also have a base land speed of 30ft

They have darkvision out to 60ft due to their glowing eyes, they seem to slightly glow in the dark.

Natural weapons:Claws 1d6, Bite 1d6, Back claws 1d4

Racial Proficiencies: Proficient with the Scimitar,Falchion, and Treat the Greatbow and a curved bladed exotic weapon of their choice as Martial weapons.
(Note: DM has full judge on what qualifies as a curved Exotic weapon in their games. Fine examples are the Khopesh, and the Great Scimitar/falchion)

Natural armor of +2, and DR 5/Piercing, also Automatically make saves for taking massive damage due to their very tough bodily hides.

Rake:When a Jango hits someone with both claws, makes a rake attack that deals one step lower than the claws damage, plus 1.5 Str mod. Also when in a grapple, they automatically deal rake damage if they hit with both claw attacks.

Close Quarter specialist:due to their inborn nature of combat, especially in close confined areas, they only take half the penalties and do not lose their dex mod to AC for fighting in close defined areas such as squeezing through tight spaces, Fighting in a grapple, and so on. Further more, they gain a +2 racial bonus to grapple checks.
Of course they lose these benefits if they are immobilized or otherwise completely helpless.

Jango Code:Code of Jango is a strange code to honor your kills and embrace nature. They cannot and will not under any circumstances, wear metal, Thus cannot wear any metal armor like that of the druid. Also prefer to not attack those who wear metal, thus suffer -4 to attack rolls and on will saves vs fear against them. Also the Jango worship the Bandicoot and AlWAYS choose it as their animal companion. Thus must always do so. Also a Jango must always take something from what it kills as a trophy such as the teeth and the like. This code is built into the minds of the Jango at birth, as thus, would never break it, even if charmed to do so, they are allowed another save every time they are doing something that would break their code. If they wear metal, every round they can make another save to break the mind infuencing effect otherwise. If they should ever wear metal armor for any reason, they suffer the penalties as if non-proficient with it, even if there class says otherwise, Also thrown into fear, or become worse depending on their current fear status, and they only move at half movement while wearing metal armor. However armor that is mostly non-metal is acceptable, such as studded leather.

Versatile Survival:They can track or otherwise use survival checks in any type of terrain, even Urban areas such as cities, except in cold wasteland areas. Otherwise have Survival as a class skill, and if they already have it as a class skill, they gain a +2 racial to survival checks.

Also gain Profession(taxidermy) as a class skill, and a +2 to hide, spot, and move silently checks.

Languages:automatically know Gnoll and they favor to know the languages of their enemies.
Bonus languages:Common,Elven,Orc,Goblin,Giant, Halfling, Gol-kaa(language of the Goliaths)

Favored class:Ranger

LA+1 ???

Bandicoot God: Domains are;Plant,Animal, and Travel,

Unbalanced stats, 5 natural weapons + rake, skill bonuses.
Definately +1, maybe even a +2. I wonder how well these things would play as rogue's.
5 or 7 sneak attacks a round, at every level.

Glad at someone likes my crazy idea. So, any more comments?

Does anyone think I should post this on the D20 Modern board?

Also gain Profession(taxidermy) as a class skill,
I know it's in the fluff, but... what's the selling price for a stuffed Kobold war party?

I know it's in the fluff, but... what's the selling price for a stuffed Kobold war party?

I am unsure, I would go with the prices for taxidermy from the Trophy Collector (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Trophy_Collector,PH2) Feat from the PH2. However, take the price and make it 25 or 50, Per each kobold.

so what do you think of the Jango? Any other comments?

How about a Jango based off the race found in the Predator series?A spiked buckler that can cast a blur spell on the user. Good for concealment of Jango features, usable as defence and offence.A double headed weapon similar to the orcish double axe but with one axe head and one mace head. Gives you 2 types of damge for dealing with undead? Based off holy weapon of god.Steel throwing wedges similar to the crystalline wedges used by Thri-keen,can be caught and thrown again.Just some random thoughts.

Odd, BLUR BUCKLER doesn't even make sense how it would function, at least to me. Otherwise wouldn't be that useful of an item, as it just gives 20% concealment.

DOUBLE HEADED MACE-AXE, interesting variant to the religious weapon I had in mind, as mine was pretty much a big mace, with 4 axe blades coming out of it, combining the weight with the cutting edge of axes would make a decent weapon. Although yours is something that looks interesting, but I think the Ax mace I had in mind would be preferred. Maybe I'll use them both, this double weapon for some elite guard to the priests or something.

throwing wedges, don't know anything on thri kreen, besides the Jango got big bows, so throwing wedges probably wouldn't be all that useful.

Of course any of these ideas are possible, given any Jango that travels out more solo style for chiefdom could change their arsenal of weaponry.

So, got any ideas for the Ax-mace, their LA, and what to use for the Bandicoot species?

Edit: Thank you much for replying, I'm in definite need of feed back for this race!

The buckler offers a +1 to Ac,the spike can be used as a weapon or to lock up an enemies shield. I forget what the manuver is called, shield pin? Plus for staging purposes it allows the Dm to reveal the bestial features for dramatic value? And 20% concealment is nothing to sneeze at for a race with an aversion to metallic armor. Still,I'm not married to the idea, liked it in warhammer 40,000k and adapted it. Your idea of putting four ax heads onto a mace makes the weapon a little cumbersome,I'd probably go with a Greataxe or Halberd. The double headed weapon I suggested could unscrew in the middle and be used as two seperate weapons? Perhaps it could unscrew and be linked by a chain or rope to give a martial arts type weapon? Just a thought. I see these as being easier to make and carry than the great bow. In a modern setting saw blades could be folded and given a wooden spine to allow throwing like a boomerang? The curve fits in with curve themed weapons. For a Bandicoot I'd probably just go with dire rat stats. I also think the LA for a Jango should be +2. Still the are just my thoughts, antbody else want to chime in?

Glad ye like it, got an idea on the Ax-mace, What Bandicoot should be, and LA for this creature?

On the fett man, in fact the story of mine in the modern sense was that the Jango code was developed from the "Jango Fett" agreement! So in fact I had something fett esque when I created this race in my head.

Man I love this race, crazy, and makes little sense, just the way I like these guys.

They hate and fear metal, and yet...

Racial Proficiencies: Proficient with the Scimitar,Falchion, and Treat the Greatbow and a curved bladed exotic weapon of their choice as Martial weapons.

I would give them proficiency in clubs, and other non-metal weapons, instead.

I would also agree that this race is a solid +2LA. Pretty powerful, all in all.

I can see where one would make such a mistake, I was quite vague in my wording of the code it seems, as I had to go back and find the thing that kinda answers it vaguely.

They cannot and will not under any circumstances, wear metal, Thus cannot wear any metal armor like that of the druid. Also prefer to not attack those who wear metal, thus suffer -4 to attack rolls and on will saves vs fear

Although to be fair, I didn't say wield, and only wear, which would imply wearing armor and not wielding weapons. Well then I guess I will update the code so as to ensure it states weapons are cool.

LA +2, well I've got 2 for +2 and one or so for +1, unsure really. Although I think a LA+2 will be appropriate, I should probably go through the +2 LA races and compare and see if it's worth it's +2.

So then, What about the Ax-mace and Bandicoot?

My guess from others input and mine that Ax-mace could just be a warmace that deals slashing damage and Bandicoot I could use rat for them, as they were kinda called pig rats or something like that I believe.

I'm not sure what to say about the axe mace It doesn't seem like a bad idea and its based off an existing one so it shouldn't pose a problem.

And this whole time I was thinking of the movie Django... You know, the western where the guy drags around the coffin full of guns. I was thinking of one of these guys whipping a machine gun up out of his coffin and mowing down his enemies.

Not really in keeping with the race, however.

Suppose you took a curved wooden shaft (3ft long) and added a scimatar or falchion to each end. This would give you a double -headed weapon that could be used like a klingon batleth(sp?).
Aryxbez

JANGO strike again!!

Nonetheless, sorry Taradusis, I don't think I'm going to be mimicking the ways of the Star treks klingon, or predator movies, as that is simply not what they are I feel. Otherwise a double weapon might be considered, as the priest guardians or some such.

Otherwise that just leaves the Bandicoot, of course I've said a many times, that rat would work. However I ponder on what others have to say.

I can only hope in the end, that this race will be makeable for 4th edition, of course I wonder if I would even have a reason to do so.

In time of due of the new edition, I'm gonna try to make the 4th edition JANGO.

I apologize to post it here, I've done so, due to this being the orginal thread. I'll probably create another 4th ed thread elsewhere for this.
