| ericSHINRA02-26-07, 11:52 PM | the RACES of LACAE Ok, some of the races for my setting have features which carry over from the standard Core Races but they're also a bit different. I'm in need of some help, however, in determining the LA for these races. EDITS WILL BE MADE IN BOLD HUMAN Humans are the most numerous of the races that make their home in Lacae. They are highly adaptable and able not only to survive but prosper in some of the most inhospitable corners of the world. Though their lifespan pales in comparison to other races, quite a few have left a lasting impact on the world. Humans stand on average between five to six feet in height and have come in a variety of both skin, hair and eye color, each a sign of their ethnicity and heritage. ~ Medium size. ~ Base Land Speed: 30 feet. ~ Bonus Feat at 1st Level. ~ +4 Skill Points at 1st Level and +1 Skill Point at each additional level. ~ Automatic Languages: Common. ~ Favored Class: Any. ~ Level Adjustment: +0 BANZAN Banzan are odd-pig like creatures which stand around five feet in height and usually five-feet wide as well. Though not the smartest of creatures, Banzan are extraordinarily resilient and are quite powerful. Their skin color varies from red or dull brown hue, though any color is possible. Most Banzan have brown eyes and possess no body hair. They tend to wear loose clothing which doesn’t hinder their already restricted movement. Though not the most-likeable of folk, they love money and as such a good deal of Banzan work as merchants or other occupations where they can fulfill their avarice. ~ +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity, -2 Charisma ~ Medium size. ~ Base Land Speed: 20 feet. ~ Stability: Banzan gain a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground). ~ Sweat Glands: Banzan lack the normal sweat glands other creatures possess and take a -4 penalty to checks involving exhaustion. ~ Resilience: Banzan have a +4 bonus to fortitude saves against poison. ~ +3 racial bonus to Sense Motive and Appraise checks. ~ EDIT: +1 Natural Armor bonus Thanks to AZNsupermarket ~ Automatic Languages: Banzan, Common. ~ Favored Class: Rogue. ~ Level Adjustment: +0 GOBLIN Goblins are mischievous creatures which take pleasure in the teasing and tormenting of others. Though cowardly, Goblins work well in groups and can be a forced to be reckoned with if properly organized. They usually stand just under three feet in height and their skin can be of any color, though the members of most tribes are of the same color. Their eyes are usually bright yellow and they have little to no hair on their slender bodies. Goblins usually cloth themselves as to not restrict their movement and care little for appearance. ~ +4 Dexterity, -2 Strength, -2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence ~ Small size: +1 bonus to Armor Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on Hide checks, –4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits 3/4 those of Medium characters. ~ Base Land Speed: 30 feet. ~ Darkvision 60. ~ +3 racial bonus on Move Silently and Escape Artist checks. ~ Greater Ally: When on the giving or receiving side of an Aid Other check, a Goblin receives a +3(vs. +2) and when attacking a foe that is Flanked by an ally, a Goblin receives a +4(vs. +2). ~ Automatic Languages: Goblin. ~ Favored Class: Ranger. ~ Level Adjustment: +0 HALFLING Halflings possess an indomitable wanderlust, traveling wherever their talents can be put to good use. They stand about three feet in height and are typically slender, though the more affluent Halfling will often be somewhat stocky. Like, Humans, Halflings are a varied lot but have great comradely with one another. Halflings prefer comfortable clothing. ~ +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, -2 Strength, -2 Constitution ~ Small size: +1 bonus to Armor Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on Hide checks, –4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits 3/4 those of Medium characters. ~ Base Land Speed: 20 feet. ~ +2 Bonus on saving throws on fortitude saves against alcohol. ~ -1 on Intimidation checks. ~ +1 racial bonus on attack rolls with thrown weapons and slings. ~ Halflings receive Deft Hands as a free feat at 1st Level. ~ Automatic Languages: Common, Halfling. ~ Favored Class: Rogue. ~ Level Adjustment: +0 ORC and HALF-ORC In ages past, the Orcish clans were little more then bloodthirsty barbarians who reveled in bringing death and terror to the peaceful peoples of Lacae. Though a number of more ‘noble’ tribes have recently been working to change their reputation for the better, many still cling to the old ways. Orcs commonly stand over size feet in height, though there are exceptions and are both massively muscled and extremely tough. Their skin is always varied shades of green and their eyes can be of any color. Though their hair is naturally black, the Orcs have been known to die their hair in special paint they also use on their bodies use to appear more imposing. Orcs dress in as little as possible when and rarely if ever wear heavy armor. Half-Orcs are the product of a Human mating with an Orc and are often shunned by both societies, unable to find their place in the world. ORC ~ +4 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma ~ Medium Size ~ Base Land Speed: 30 feet. ~ Darkvision 60. ~ Predict Weather: Orcs can the predict weather for the next 24 hours with a DC 5 Survival check. ~ Orc’s receive Diehard and Endurance as a free feat at 1st Level. ~ +4 racial bonus on intimidation checks. ~ +2 Natural Armor bonus ~ Automatic Languages: Orc ~ Favored Class: Barbarian ~ Level Adjustment: +1 HALF-ORC ~ +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma ~ Medium Size ~ Base Land Speed: 30 feet. ~ Darkvision 60. ~ Orc’s receive Diehard as a free feat at 1st Level. ~ +3 racial bonus on intimidation checks. ~ +1 Natural Armor bonus ~ Automatic Languages: Orc ~ Favored Class: Barbarian ~ Level Adjustment: +0 ... more to come. |
| paladin201902-27-07, 12:50 AM | Lacae is you home-brewed campaign? |
| ericSHINRA02-27-07, 12:52 AM | Lacae is you home-brewed campaign? You are correct, sir. However, I've yet to get down much of the setting on paper apart from what you see above. Any comments on the correct LA for these races? |

It will help balance out the penalty to dex pretty nicely. |

Ah, good point there. Can't believe I didn't think of that. Oddly enough, I like the Banzan the most out of all the above races. Mechanics aside, are they decent flavor wise? |
| Kolbane_Ferretmaster02-27-07, 02:11 AM | I also like the Banzan. It encourages a different type of rogue to your normal sneaky type. Flavour-wise, all is solid |
| ericSHINRA02-27-07, 02:01 PM | I also like the Banzan. It encourages a different type of rogue to your normal sneaky type. Flavour-wise, all is solid Thank you. I wanted to break the stereotype that rogues are all stealthy thieves-types. |
| AZNsupermarket02-27-07, 04:14 PM | Nice flavor, but mechanics are more my thing. I have a few more nitpicks here and there. GOBLIN ~ +4 Dexterity, -2 Strength, -2 Intelligence ~ Small size: +1 bonus to Armor Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on Hide checks, –4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits 3/4 those of Medium characters. ~ Base Land Speed: 20 feet. ~ Level Adjustment: +0 +4 bonuses to any stat at LA +0 is rarely given. If you plan on giving a +4 bonus to dexterity, I would suggest that you make it hurt a bit more than a -2 str -2 int. I would suggest a -2 str -2 con because for many classes, int is a dump stat, while con almost never is. 30 move speed wouldn't be bad either. If you would like a reference point to compare your race to, check out the air goblin from Unearthed Arcana. Air Goblin: +4 Dex -2 Str -2 Con, small, 30 ft., rogue, humanoid (goblinoid), unearthed arcana pg.16 HALF-ORC ~ +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma ~ Medium Size ~ Base Land Speed: 30 feet. ~ Darkvision 60. ~ Orc’s receive Diehard as a free feat at 1st Level. ~ +3 racial bonus on intimidation checks. ~ +1 Natural Armor bonus ~ Automatic Languages: Orc ~ Favored Class: Barbarian ~ Level Adjustment: +0 I was on the fence about the +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma. A bonus to two physical stats for a penalty to two mental stats isn't really balanced, but the PHB half-orcs really need a power boost. The +1 natural armor in addition to the unbalanced stat modifiers makes me want to say that this is a little overpowered. I'm going to leave it up to you what you want to change, but this half-orc seems significantly more powerful than some of your other races (Banzan for instance). Your Halfling is pretty powerful, yet balanced. I like! |

In terms of the Halfling, I admit I stole some ideas from the Core Rule Books as well as the -1 Intimidate from Heo1780's 'Hobbit' race. |
| AZNsupermarket02-27-07, 05:12 PM | Yeah, it is a bit powerful... Suppose I could always keep the -2 Dexterity of full-blooded Orcs. This works out well balance-wise IMHO. If you ever want to get rid of one of those stat penalties, I suggest getting rid of the Natural Armor. My only criticism is that it currently steps dangerously on the Banzan's territory. In terms of the Halfling, I admit I stole some ideas from the Core Rule Books as well as the -1 Intimidate from Heo1780's 'Hobbit' race. +2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, -2 Strength, -2 Constitution is my favorite part of your halfling. IMHO you can ditch the Int penalty completely from the goblins and still maintain balance. |
