| reaper508109-14-07, 11:02 AM | This is a new race I made and I need advice on it. Is the LA about right? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Edited to reflect the responses of the board users A stunningly beautiful Woman walks towards you, she looks to be no more than 25, how old are you? You ask. She replies, two thousand five hundred and thirty three years old tomorrow. The timeless are a race of extremely beautiful, powerful humanoids who are outlived only by the mightiest of Dragons. Nobody is sure where they come from or how their race came to be but some scholars say that they are the result of the breeding of gods and dragons. The oldest of the Timeless are rumored to be over 4,000 years old. The Timeless are very few in number because most other races everywhere shun them and some are even hunted once their community finds out the truth of their longevity, assuming that they must be Devils in disguise. The problem is even more compounded because the Timeless women only become fertile once every 1,000 years. A few of these rare peoples have taken to living with the dragons, who seem to not be disturbed by their almost immortality. Appearance The Timeless appear to be incredibly attractive humans. Lands The Timeless are so few in number that they have no lands of their own. Language The Timeless speak the language of whatever people they live around. Timeless Racial traits Size: Medium. As medium creatures the Timeless take no penalties or advantages for their size. Type: Outsider (Native) Base land speed: 40 feet. Senses: Darkvision 120', Low light vision four times as good as a human, +2 on spot and listen checks. The Timeless have incredible sight and hearing. Immunities: Paralysis, poison, magic sleep effects. Abilities: +2 str. +2 dex. +2 wis. +4 cha. Spell resistance: 15+ class levels Fast Healing: 5 Long Lived: The maximum age for a Timeless is 4,000 years old plus their Constitution score. Also, the timeless do not suffer the affects of aging. LA: +4 Automatic languages: Common. Bonus Languages: Any. The timeless gain speak language and Knowledge (History) as a class skill. Untouchable: Timeless gain a deflection bonus to AC equal to their cha. bonus. Timeless Feats The ability to take these feats are dependant on the con. score of the Timeless in question. Aquatic prereq: Lived in/around aquatic environ for 200 years, Con. 15 The Timeless has lived in/around aquatic conditions for so long they gain the ability to breathe water and a swim speed of 40 feet. Tundra* prereq: Lived in Tundra like conditions for 150 years, Con. 13 The timeless has learned to live in freezing cold conditions and takes no penalties for being in cold temperatures and can walk their normal speed even in deep snow. Desert* prereq: Lived in desert conditions for 150 years, Con. 13 The timeless has lived in the hot, dry, and arid conditions of the desert for so long that they no longer take penalties for heat conditions and can move their normal speed in areas of deep sand. * This is based on a house rule I use that says that in deep snow/sand, a character's speed is reduced by on step. |

| xXOblivionXx09-14-07, 03:43 PM | Don't like it. |
| reaper508109-14-07, 03:45 PM | Any particular reason? Is it balanced for it's LA? |
| Malek299109-14-07, 03:58 PM | The only suggestion I have is if they are decendant from gods or dragons, you might want to instead make them Outsider(native). But that pretty much won't change anything else. |
| reaper508109-14-07, 04:00 PM | Technically, you are right, but I want this race to be specifically native to the material plane. |
| xXOblivionXx09-14-07, 05:30 PM | Any particular reason? Is it balanced for it's LA? I don't know, it's pretty well balanced but theres something I don't like. But overall it's fine. |
| reaper508109-14-07, 05:53 PM | I don't know, it's pretty well balanced but theres something I don't like. But overall it's fine. Thanks for the input. If you think of anything let me know :) |
| yrogerg09-14-07, 06:43 PM | Technically, you are right, but I want this race to be specifically native to the material plane. Outsider (native) creatures usually are. |
| reaper508109-14-07, 06:45 PM | oh. but can't outsider (native) creatures be banished? |
| yrogerg09-14-07, 07:05 PM | oh. but can't outsider (native) creatures be banished? No. They're not Extraplanar. Native Subtype: A subtype applied only to outsiders. These creatures have mortal ancestors or a strong connection to the Material Plane and can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be. Creatures with this subtype are native to the Material Plane (hence the subtype’s name). Unlike true outsiders, native outsiders need to eat and sleep. Spells Dismissal Abjuration Level: Clr 4, Sor/Wiz 5 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: One extraplanar creature Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will negates; see text Spell Resistance: Yes This spell forces an extraplanar creature back to its proper plane if it fails a special Will save (DC = spell’s save DC – creature’s HD + your caster level). If the spell is successful, the creature is instantly whisked away, but there is a 20% chance of actually sending the subject to a plane other than its own. Extraplanar Subtype: A subtype applied to any creature when it is on a plane other than its native plane. A creature that travels the planes can gain or lose this subtype as it goes from plane to plane. Monster entries assume that encounters with creatures take place on the Material Plane, and every creature whose native plane is not the Material Plane has the extraplanar subtype (but would not have when on its home plane). Every extraplanar creature in this book has a home plane mentioned in its description. Creatures not labeled as extraplanar are natives of the Material Plane, and they gain the extraplanar subtype if they leave the Material Plane. No creature has the extraplanar subtype when it is on a transitive plane, such as the Astral Plane, the Ethereal Plane, and the Plane of Shadow. All in the SRD. |
| reaper508109-14-07, 07:07 PM | Outsider (native) added. |
| Artifact09-14-07, 09:21 PM | Well, I like them :). The idea of truly timeless beings has always been a fascination of mine. I especially would enjoy any other fluff you have on the timeless. They kinda remind me of the Time Lords, a.k.a Doctor Who. They seem balanced mechanically as far as I can see, and the LA is what I might expect, considering the fast healing and SR. The longevity of the race prolly isn't worth much (if anything). Before I go, if your looking for inspiration, check out Dragon Magazine #354. In it is an article called "Ancient PCs: Playing Elders In D&D" by Hal Maclean. It examines what it means to be immortal in-depth, including ancient backrounds, ancient feats, and even a special ability known as endless, assigned to long-lived characters. You can order back issues from Paizo.com. |
| skydin09-14-07, 09:30 PM | Each can only have one child during their lifetime, male and female? Then every generation would be half the size of the last one... Even if that only aplies to the females, that would mean just for it to keep going, they would all be related at this point. I dont know, I just dont like it. The concept is good, but the way its written feels kind of flat I guess... |
| IdleAltruism09-14-07, 10:07 PM | Appearance The Timeless appear to be incredibly attractive humans. Lands The Timeless are so few in number that they have no lands of their own. Language The Timeless speak the language of whatever people they live around. I would also make it so speak language is always a class skill. Technically if such a being existed in our own world historically they'd probably have the capacity to pick up a large number of languages. Senses: Darkvision 120', +2 on spot and listen checks. The Timeless have incredible sight and hearing. It would make more sense if they had lowlight, if they're just advanced humans darkvision is stretching it a bit. Abilities: +2 str. +2 dex. +2 wis. +4 cha. Stats are pretty weak for a LA+4. Spell resistance: 11+ class levels Again this is sort of weak for its LA. Fast Healing: 5 This is costing them alot and fast healing is a nice ability, but it really is hurting them more then helping. I'd make it 1 fast healing and some special abilities(look at other LA+4s for comparison, what might be even better look at the Unholy scion from HoH LA+5. The stats look like something you might be interested in) Long Lived: The maximum age for a Timeless is 4,000 years old plus their Constitution score. Also, the timeless do not suffer the affects of aging. So if they have a 12 con they could be 4001? Timeless Feats The ability to take these feats are dependant on the con. score of the Timeless in question. Aquatic prereq: Lived in/around aquatic environ for 200 years, Con. 16 The Timeless has lived in/around aquatic conditions for so long they gain the ability to breathe water and a swim speed of 40 feet. Tundra* prereq: Lived in Tundra like conditions for 150 years, Con. 14 The timeless has learned to live in freezing cold conditions and takes no penalties for being in cold temperatures and can walk their normal speed even in deep snow. Desert* prereq: Lived in desert conditions for 150 years, Con. 14 The timeless has lived in the hot, dry, and arid conditions of the desert for so long that they no longer take penalties for heat conditions and can move their normal speed in areas of deep sand. * This is based on a house rule I use that says that in deep snow/sand, a character's speed is reduced by on step. These feats look pretty underpowered unless you had a campaign geared towards the specific areas. Why not just give them the endurance feat? It seems like that would be the more practical solution. The breathe water one is a bit overpowered, I'd make it half swim speed and can use the hold breathe ability like a lizard folk. The race looks really weak. Drow are more powerful and thats saying something. I suggest looking at other LA+4s for a better comparison(note that most LA+4s are underpowered because of their LA so making a creature slightly more powerful then them should be ok) |
| Ecalsneerg09-15-07, 09:07 AM | oh. but can't outsider (native) creatures be banished? Actually, outsiders, while commonly banished, aren't usually stated. Extraplanar means if you're not on your home plane, you can get banished. i.e. go to another plane with a human, they can get banished. |
| reaper508109-15-07, 01:06 PM | Speak language class skill added. Spell resistance upped to 15+ class levels If they have con. 12 they could be 4012 Low light added |
| reaper508109-15-07, 01:50 PM | How about adding this: Untouchable The timeless gain a deflection bonus equal to their cha modifier. |
| JackSnape09-15-07, 02:43 PM | I agree they are a little weak for LA4 but will they even be played, or are they just NPC? You might add knowlege history as a racial bonus and knowlege skills to class skills. It fits well with the idea of a very old race and can be very helpful a PC trying to play this kind of race. |
| gullas09-15-07, 05:16 PM | I would say that they are lvl adjustment +3 , as far as i can read ...... pretty nice race though:) |

Mostly NPC but I want to make it PC freindly as well. I don't want to add any more racial bonuses but I could make Knowledge (history) a class skill. |

| Tequila_Sunrise09-17-07, 05:29 PM | Okay, I have a few strong comments on this idea. This is a new race I made and I need advice on it. Is the LA about right? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. The LA looks about right, but I'm no expert on LAs. Personally, I don't like LA races as a DM or as a player. If at all possible, new PC-friendly races should avoid LAs unless they have thematically appropriate abilities that simply demand one. As far as I can tell, the only thematically appropriate the Timeless possess is near-immortality, which is LA-neutral. The problem is even more compounded because the Timeless only give birth to a single child during their lifetime. A few of these rare peoples have taken to living with the dragons, who seem to not be disturbed by their almost immortality. First, it might be just me, but why does every second race have to be "stunningly beautiful"? It's nothing inherently bad, I just think it's overdone. Second, if each Timeless woman only gives birth to one child ever, the Timeless population will be reduced by at least half every generation. Now maybe that's appropriate in your campaign world, but it doesn't make sense in general purpose. Something like "Timeless women are only fertile once every hundred years" would serve the flavor that you're trying to give them without forcing the race into extinction within X generations. Thirdly, and again this could just be me, but I absolutely hate races that are supposed to be immortal or timeless, but die anyway in however many thousand years. If a race dies naturally, IT IS NOT IMMORTAL OR TIMELESS, period. "Nearly immortal", "virtually immortal", or all the other whatever-immortal is not the same as "immortal" or "timeless". So please, please either make the Timeless truly immortal or call them something else. Timeless Feats The ability to take these feats are dependant on the con. score of the Timeless in question. This is a bit of a nitpick, but ability requirements for feats are always odd numbers. Desert* prereq: Lived in desert conditions for 150 years, Con. 14 The timeless has lived in the hot, dry, and arid conditions of the desert for so long that they no longer take penalties for heat conditions and can move their normal speed in areas of deep sand. A lot of people don't know this, but deserts are not by definition hot places. There are cold deserts such as antarctica and hot deserts such as the Sahara, but a desert unless it is in such an extreme lattitude is blazing hot during the day and bone-chillingly cold at night. The only defining trait of all deserts is their lack of water, so perhaps this feat would be better if it removed penalties for dehydration. |
| reaper508109-17-07, 07:33 PM | First, they are stunningly beautiful because they are descended from gods. Second, you are right. Fertile once every X years is better, only I think I will make it every 1000 years because the race is supposed to be rare. Third, Timeless sounds better ;) I will change the number. In my world, deserts are only in hot environments (it's homebrew) but technically you are right. Thanks for the help :D |
| nonsi09-18-07, 03:17 PM | To make them a solid +4 LA, make them totally ageless (kind'a like the Killoren, but peak at adult stage) and immune to poison. |
| reaper508109-18-07, 03:20 PM | Poison immunity added, I want them to die at some point though and I kind of based age on metallic dragons. |
| reaper508109-19-07, 02:15 PM | Alright, I think it's coming along nicely, if any one else has comments please make them by Friday. I would like to have a completed version by then. |
| Lord_of_the_Bump09-21-07, 03:53 AM | The maximum age for these guys seems a little peculiar. I mean, they get older and older and they're just about to die when they get a Constitution increasing item and they're fine for a couple more years... as long as they don't remove the item. It's a bit arbitrary for my taste. Couldn't they get to 4000 years of age and have to make steadily more difficult Fortitude saves (or Constitution checks) before succombing to the ravages of time? Maybe if they fail the test, they would have a random amount of time before death? |
| reaper508109-21-07, 03:19 PM | I should have said, only permanent con. bonus counts. I hate the fort save system. |
