| NorthWind10-24-07, 10:22 PM | A race of magicians by NorthWind The Umbrial, millenia ago, had a grand kingdom in the Otherlands. A tribe of magicians with potent racial magic, they held sway over a vast tract of the Otherlands for centuries. However, the other fey banded together for once, and forced a cross-planar exodus of the people...that survived. The Umbrial fled to the Prime Material, hiding in hillsides and shying away from contact in general for a long while. Eventually, they began to speak with magicians, and taught them their own secret of magic - that of conjuring fairy spirits. Relations: today, they live either as extended families in enchanted hills, or dispersed among the population of the Northern States, many of them making a living with their magic as any other magician. Their connections with other fey are tenuous - although so many thousands of years ago was their empire and fall, most fairies are still uneasy around them, and vice versa, though few remember why. Many years away from the intrigue and petty wars of the fairies have changed their outlook on a whole - the few hundred that survived suffered a crushing defeat, and today, few (if any) lust for political power, preferring to pursue more peaceful goals. Umbrial (subtype to be announced) Racial abilites: +2 Intelligence, -2 Strength. Base land speed 30' -2 on Diplomacy checks made with fey +2 bonus to Knowledge [arcana] and Spellcraft checks With a successful level check against a DC of 15 + 2(spell level), an Umbrial may slightly alter a spell's effect in one of the following ways: increase range by 110%; increase duration by 110%; add one to the spell's DC; or with a successful check and full-round action, cast a spell without using a verbal component. Detect magic (10' range, suppress at will) Read Magic at will An Umbrial's soul is made of magic. Upon the character's death, nothing short of a Wish, Miracle or similar intervention may raise an Umbrial. Avg. Lifespan of 700 years (650 + d%) Languages: (I haven't made any yet!) That's the nuts and bolts version, without any fluff or fancy wording. I suspect it needs alteration. No time for proper background information, I'll edit later. What's most important is that the L.A. is +0, and I'm willing to change abilities to make it have no LA |
| NorthWind10-26-07, 06:09 PM | Bump? C'mon, nothing guys? |
| jradd77710-27-07, 02:15 AM | When you say "increase by 110%," are you sure that's what you mean? When talking about %'s I can understand getting confused, it's a minor mistake, but do you mean that if the original number is 50 the new one is 105 or that if the original number is 50 the new one is 55? The first example that I asked would be an increase of 110%, the second is 110% of the original, which is "increased" but not an increase of said amount. Let me know if that's just confusing. |
| NorthWind11-02-07, 07:55 PM | Sorry, I meant to say "110% of the original", yeah. It's (original number) + (1/10th of the original). |
| jradd77711-03-07, 06:47 AM | Personally, I might also give them a +2 to WIS to balance the penalty to STR, because I kinda think the other stuff balances itself out, in general... but I'm not an expert on some of those things (aka, I'm not sure how sweet/or not sweet Read Magic at will is etc. compared to only being able to be revived by wish etc.) |
| NorthWind11-03-07, 10:09 PM | Mmm...good point. I might wait for a second opinion on that, but it's in keeping with their theme. Thanks for the response, by the by. |
| jradd77711-03-07, 11:29 PM | Yep, no problem, since you hadn't been replied to yet, I figured I'd do some small suggestions and help keep it bumped. I agree on waiting for other opinions, since, like I said, I'm not really sure if it would be too much, but it did seem to be kind of along their line of things. |
| Aleolus11-04-07, 12:42 PM | Looks interesting. I'm no good at figuring out LA, so I won't comment on that, but they do seem fairly 'underpowered' (going by the various ways that people on these boards will min/max to get the most abilities for the lowest LA), but I like them. |
