In a campaign world im making some animal species have been Awakened so widely that they have bred true and a re a new race. Of course this means I'll have to make racial options for some of the classes since most of the animals wont have hands.

For example: A crocodile (not one Ill be using) wants to become a fighter. As a racial variant, instead of weapon proficiencies at first level (he's already familiar with his natural attacks as part of his race ,and he cant weied weapons) he gets a list of Feats that he can also choose from as Fighter Feats. This list will be tailored to the individual race and probably include Monstrous Feats based on their body type.

Second Example: A crocodile wants to become a Barbarian. At first level instead of weapon proficiencies he gains the following ability: His Barbarian levels and Racial Hit Dice stack for purposes of determing how powerful his rage is. I.E. a 3 HD croc/8th level Barbarian gains Greater Rage.

What do you think?

Racial substitution levels.

These have shown up in several books. They give a small block for variations on the class features of about three levels of a 20-level class. They almost never apply to a class that is a favored class for a race, as they tend to fix a suboptimal or oddball character niche.

It sounds fine to me, just remember that you should not use substitution levels to make a race more powerful in a role, you should only give them more options by replacing suboptimal class features with equivalent ones that play to the race's strengths (such as a level 1 dwarf barbarian replacing fast movement with a +4 bonus to checks against tripping and bull rushing). Also, there's no such thing as "monster feats", the SRD is a bit misleading because that's how it organizes the feats that appeared in the Monster Manual. They're just feats with prerequisites most characters cannot meet, and have no special descriptor. You have to be specific about which feats your allowing to be on the list.

Was gonna specify a list of feats for each animal race. It isnt really intended to make them more powerful just give them some sort of option since they're limited by not having hands. So the weapon proficienceies each class gets are largely pointless to them, and since they'll need help getting in and out of armor or someone to carry their spellbook and components or what not I was going to work out some sort of options to make people interested in palying them instead of thinking what a pain in the *** they might end up being.
