Whoever gets the reference gets a cookie, by the way.

If you're a member of a race that has the Flight extraordinary ability, and if the description says nothing about whether you can or can't fly in medium or heavy armor or while carrying a medium or heavy load, is it assumed that you can?

Likewise, if your description doesn't say one way or the other whether you can use the run action while flying (but only in a straight line), is it assumed that you can or that you can't?

:cookie: as promised.

Why do I have the impression that I derailed my own thread?
5 posts and all I have is one guy saying that running while flying is an automatic attribute.

C'mon, keep it coming.

The SRD states that you cannot fly if carrying more than a light load.

The above link has the answers. You can only fly if carrying no more than a light load, and you can run in a straight line when flying.

This does not apply to the fly spell, which has different rules.

CryoSilver and Morwen, thank you for your input. Although I always like to check things in the hard copies as well as the SRD, now I know where to look.

M1kh43l_P4r4d1s0, yeah, the thread got derailed, but then it got back on track. The person here doing the most work at derailing it now is you. Congrats.

However, it should be noted that it also states that Medium Armor does not constitute a medium load (unless the actual weight of it does put you into medium).

Thus, you CAN wear medium armor while flying.

Thus, you CAN wear medium armor while flying. I like the concept of mithral full plate that includes wing covers. :)

As stated by others, natural (winged) flight requires that the creature's burden not exceed a light load, and allows them to use the run action in a similar manner to running on the ground. Wearing medium armor (as part of a light load) does not prevent flight, but it does reduce their movement rate as per the standard encumbrance rules.

The SRD about Barding however sais:

Flying mounts can’t fly in medium or heavy barding.

So, what do we learn from that:

-That part of the rules is stupid and should be ignored.
-The other parts of the rules are stupid and forgot to mention, that you can't fly in medium or heave armor.
-Only mount-like shaped creatures can't fly in medium or heavy armor
-Creaturs can't - fly, wear medium/heavy armor and carry a rider - all at the same time.
-Winged creatures can't fly in heavy or medium armor.

Choose your dash.
YabaTheWhat

04-27-07, 09:31 AM
Choose your dash. I think they just didn't want people calculating encumbrance every time a rider climbed on or off of a flying mount.

Personally I require solid-piece metal armors to be custom fitted to flying characters. They must also be at least of masterwork quality, to avoid impairing wing movement.

I'm going to go with "Can Fly in Medium armor and discard everything else"

Seeing a dragon landing in mithril full plate is a stable of fantasy: I'm not about to end that just because there's an instance where the rules don't agree.

I would imagine that, even with their improved quadraped carrying capacity, medium barding, a rider, and the rider's armor and equipment would almost always put them into Medium load.
Of course, as a DM, if my player made a convincing argument (medium barding on a mount with strength 25 carrying a naked halfling, for example) I'd allow it.

But then, that's Rule 0, not RAW!

So you three vote for

-That part of the rules is stupid and should be ignored.

Okay.
Hm, I have another interpretation ...

"Barding" differs from armor by the detail, that you don't need armor proficency to use it, just need to be "War-trained" whatever that means.

Anyway, note that there is no armored, winged flyer in the Monster Manual. Coincidence?

Why does the ground even have an AC? (of 5)

DM: you fall from the cliff. Make an attack roll.
Player: *rolls a 1* So, what do I miss?
DM: the ground.

Sorry for going a bit off topic. I personally ignore the "no flying in medium or heavy armor" part of the rules with flying characters. Flying mounts, no, but characters yes. Medium and heavy load rules still apply.

Wait, All of my characters wear light armor. What am I talking about. Seriously, I have never had a character wear medium or heavy armor.

Okay, next, the Raptoran does double damage on a dive with a piercing weapon. Can all creatures capable of flying do that, or is that a special Raptorans-only ability?
YabaTheWhat

04-30-07, 10:25 AM
Why does the ground even have an AC? (of 5) It's not actually the whole ground. A single 5 ft square of ground has AC 5 (no size bonus/penalty, -5 from dex 0).

A dive attack works like a charge attack, except the flying creature can only use claw or talon attacks, and those attacks deal double damage.

In order to dive, the creature must move at least 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet.

The ability to use any piercing weapon in a dive attack is Raptoran-only.

Sheez, I was kidding. I know it is for one square and it is used for thrown splash weapons.

I just love on how you can technically miss the ground (even if all you miss is a small portion).
Tectorman

Which actually gives you a sense of how hard it would be to fly like this. If a single 5 ft square of ground has AC 5 with no size modifiers, then a larger (say, Gargantuan) size piece of ground would have an AC well into the negatives.

Of course, you could probably still reach it if you a.) gave the ground a natural armor bonus and b.) used the variant where a natural 1 is actually a -10.

ATTENTION:

There are feats to change this!!

Races of the Dragon (p. 100 & 101)

Reinfoced Wings: Requires STR 13+ & Fly or Glide speed.
~Effect: You can fly in Medum Armor or with a Medium Load. Speed is still reduced by encumbrance due to armor or weight.

Heavyweight Wings: Requires STR 15+, Reinforced Wings, & Fly or Glide speed.
~Effect: You can fly with Heavy Armor or a Heavy Load. Speed is still reduced by encumbrance due to armor or weight.

While we're on the topic... may as well throw this in-

Complete Adventurer (pg. 110)

Improved Flight: Requires Ability to Fly (Magical, Natural, or via Shapechange)
~Effect: Maneuverability increase one step. (Clumsy > Poor, Poor > Average, Average > Good, Good > Perfect.) This can mean the difference between being able to Hover or not, or change direction for free, etc if you're a flight-heavy character.

OMFG. You guys are quoting stuff from the book this rule is in! Races of the Wild. Stormtalon PrC. Unecumbered Flight allows you to fly while carrying a medium load.

BTW...It's Raptoran only. could be modded for other races though, I suppose.

Actually, it's mentioned twice. We hear it from the narrator in So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, but Trillian hears it from her copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

So there.

Talking about the book inside the book. (cheap).

It still isn't mentioned in the first book of the series...

Besides, I didn't say I got the cookie. I just said they didn't.
