I'm designing variants of aasimar and tiefling based on what their fiendish or celestial heritage. Let me know what you think of them, and how high their LA should be. I am kinda new to making races, so if anything is just not right in terms of how their spell-like abilities work and such, let me know.

Aasimar Traits
Aasimar traits range depending on their celestial heritage. While aasimar have a blend of celestial heritage, one is always predominant. However aasimar can have vestigal signs of having a mixed celestial heritage.

Universal traits
Native Outsider (planetouched) type
Medium size
Darkvision, 60 feet
+1 racial bonus to saves against poison and petrification
Daylight 1x a day
+2 spot, listen and diplomacy
Favored class: Paladin

Aasimar Varieties

Leonal
Aasimar that have leonal heritage often have cat like eyes or particularly thick mane-like hair, powerful deep voices reminiscent of a lion‘s roar, some even have soft fine fur, or lion‘s ears. Leonal aasimar have powerful builds and despite their slightly feline appearances they usually seem anything but feral, born with a visage that commands respect, and often regal dispositions, they are like natural born leaders, and usually treated that way by their human kin.
Traits:
+2 strength, +2 charisma
The aasimar can roar once a day, which causes those in a 30 feet radius to be deafened. A successful fortitude saving throw negates. The deafness lasts for 1 minute per level.
Resistance to electricity, cold, and sonic 5

Avoral
Avoral aasimar often have long white feathers for hair, or large bird-like eyes, and sometimes fine scales on their hands and feet, they sometimes inherit the hollow bones of an avoral, thus they are often lighter weight than a human of the same size. It is not uncommon for them the have wings like their avoral ancestors which are an extention of their arms, though they are often smaller than an avoral’s and the aasimar’s flight muscles typically are underdeveloped. These aasimar have particularly keen vision like their celestial ancestor.
Traits:
+2 Dexerity, +2 wisdom
Resistance to electricity, cold, and sonic 5
The aasimar can cast Gust of Wind 1x a day

Hound
These aasimar often have dog ears like their ancestors, other times their ears are merely larger and pointed, they may have large canines, or fine fur, and they tend to be powerfully built. Hound archon aasimar have a keen sense of smell.
Traits:
+2 strength, +2 to wisdom
At third level the aasimar can cast aid 1x a day
Electricity resistance 10
Can take the scent feat

Astral
Aasimar of this type are often very tall for humans, they sometimes have feathery white wings, or simply radiate an aura of inner power about them.
strength +2, charisma +2
Acid, cold, and electricity resistance 5
Remove Fear 1x a day

Planetar
These aasimar can be quite tall and muscular, some have emerald color skin, or feathered white wings, others simply look like completely hairless humans.
+2 strength, +2 wisdom
Acid, fire, and cold resistance 5
The aasimar can cast Lesser Restoration once a day

Solar
Some have silvery or golden skin, or topaz eyes, they may have large feathery white wings, often they are very tall.
+2 strength, +2 charisma
Acid, fire, and electricity resistance 5
The aasimar can cast Resist Energy 1x a day

Tiefling

Tiefling Traits
Range depending on their infernal heritage. While tiefling have a blend of infernal heritage, one is always predominant.

Universal traits
Outsider (planetouched) type
Medium size
Darkvision, 60 feet.
+2 racial save against poison.
+2 bluff, hide, and disguise
Darkness 1x a day
+1 LA
Favored class: rogue

Tiefling Varieties

Erinyes
These tiefling are often very beautiful beings, sometimes with feathery wings. Some of them have reddish colored eyes, or pale flawless skin. Sometimes tiefling with erinyes heritage have an angelic enough look to them that they can pass for aasimar, or even be confused for celestials themselves.
Traits:
+2 charisma, +2 to dexterity
fire, acid and cold resist 5
The tiefling can cast Mirror Image 1/day

Balor
Descended from among the most terrible fearsome of fiends these tieflings often have horns, reddish colored skin, the scent of brimstone, or leathery wings.
Traits:
cold, fire, and acid resistance of 5
1x a day the tiefling can emit a burst of flame, which functions as burning hands.
+2 Strength, +2 intelligence

Succubus
Succubi and Incubi tiefling are among the most common since their fiendish ancestors are notorious for seducing mortals. These tieflings appear as almost inhumanly beautiful people, they are usually on the tall side for humans, have black hair, and an eerie glow to their eyes sometimes they even have leathery wings or a long sinuous tail.
Traits:
cold, fire, and acid resistance of 5
Charm Person 1x a day
+2 charisma, +2 intelligence

Vrock
Descended from the vulture like demons, vrock tieflings have traits hinting at their heritage, such as feathery gray wings, grayish feathers for hair, scales on their hands or feet, a stubby tail, or purplish skin.
Traits:
+2 strength, +2 constitution
cold, fire, and acid resistance of 5
1x a day the tiefling can emit an intimidating scream that leaves foes that hear it (and are within a 30 foot radius) shaken unless they make a will save. Those that fail take a -1 on their next action.

Cornugon
These tiefling tend to have an appearance that hints at a reptilian or even draconic heritage. Many just look like humans with unusually sharp teeth, but reptillian wings, black scales, a lizard-like tail and horns are all possible traits. Some of them may even be able to mistakenly pass for having draconic rather fiendish heritage.

Traits:
+2 strength, +2 dexterity
fire, cold, and acid resistance of 5
These tiefling have sharp teeth which do 1D6 piercing damage

Well first off, none of them should be below +2 LA. Second, you should work on the spell-like abilities, preferably making them first level or contrips. On a more flavorful note, it would be a good idea to get rid of the wings or make them extremely small. This mostly becuase it distracts from the image of a planetouched and half-outsider. With a few more outsiders, you're looking at a pretty good system.

good, +2 LA was about what I'm going for (well preferrably a bit on the weak side for what would usually be considered +2 LA, I am dealing with LA a bit differently than Wizards does generally). As for the image of wings, I personally really like it, I've always had a particular fondness for aasimar and tiefling for wings. That said most of them don't have wings, or they are vestigal. But there is the feat in Races of Faerun that allows aasimar and tiefling to have functional wings, and those that have that feat will be the ones with the massive wings.
I've been tried to find appropriate first level, or cantrips to give all of them, but I couldn't find any. I want their spell-like abilities (except daylight which is just universal for aasimar, and darkness which is the same for tiefling) to be things they inherited from their celestial or fiendish ancestor, and I want each one to have a different spell-like ability.

I'd make different powerlevels for each of them if I were you.

Like, for example, the first thing I noticed, Balor tiefling wasn't way stronger then the other tiefligs, and aren't balor supposed to be like...heads and shoulders above all other fiends (say for pit fiends)?

Just my two cents.

yeah, I've considered doing that, and I might still.

I agree that Balor tieflings should be more powerful because of their heritage, but on the other hand if it's going to be played as a PC then you wouldn't want it to have too high an LA.

What you might consider doing is divide the CR of a specific outsider by maybe 4 or five, round down, and use that number to set the level of that aasimar/tiefling type's SLA. That could show the varying levels of power.

Its just a basic idea, but some variant of it could work well for this (by the way, I love this idea! If you get a chance, you should try it with the half-celestial/fiend templates as well!)

If the Balor tieflings are going to be more powerful tieflings, then Solars should probably be the most powerful aasimar. Balance and all.

What I'm not fully understanding is why you have mixed both demons and devils with the tieflings?

As far as I'm aware... tieflings would be decendant of devils, this explaining the reason they start of knowing the infernal language, and not the abyssal. Also... apart form the succubus, most demons would probably kill their victim, rather then impregnate them...

On saying this, I am also aware that I could be wrong... it just strikes me as strange, that is all.

Tieflings can have any fiendish heritage, be it devilish or demonic. It specifically states that few if any know what heritage they possess and as often as not make wrong assumptions as to what their progenitors were.

you should come up with racial trait feats for current tieflings and aasimars so they could progress to the stat of parental type.
The current fiendish heritage feats don't take into account the parentage of the given creature. Over I found them interesting.

DC what?

When you give a creature offensive spell-likes, you have to specify what level and class they cast as; or if it's an existing spell with a set level (ie, not Druid 5/ranger 4), you can get away with a note that "the DC is Charisma/Constitution/whatever-based." But you've got to give us the formula somehow.

I rather like the concept, as I've always agreed there should be some distinction between planetouched of different heritage. These seem to have fitting flavor, but I'd worry that they move a little past planetouched, given their average power level.

I'd just like to thow in another idea for the tiefling side: Yulegoths

and as for an increase in power, I would go the route of bloodline traits from unearthed arcana. That way if you wanted to play a +4 level adjustment, my grandfather was a balor tiefling then you can, but you could also play a +1 LA maybe my great great great great aunt had balor blood in her tiefling.

then again your the one doing the work not me. Awesome ideas I'd been wondering why all tieflings had to be the same for a while now.

I think the demon-desended tieflings should have electricity resistance instead of one of the three they have now. Demons more commonly have electricity immunity.

That's one thing I need help with figuring out, what should the DC be? I didn't even know this thread was still alive, good to see some people are interested in the idea.

As for given the demon based ones electricity resistance, I have been thinking that I should be reworking what resistances some of them get.

Anyhow I'm thinking none of them as they are now are really worth higher than a +2 LA, they are pretty much on par with a fey'ri (well, actually if I remember correctly fey'ri get some spiffy things that I think make them a slightly more powerful), and I've always been of the opinion that LA's tend to most races with them on the weak side compared to those that don't have them anyhow.

As for Yugoloths, I sadly don't have any books with them in it, and have always thought they need to be given every bit as much attention as demons, and devils, but they have been given very little attention by Wizards comparatively.

Also I don't have Unearthed Arcana

yeah I've also sorta considered yulegoths a lesser evil.

however I would highl suggest unearthed arcana for this idea. the book's amazing.probably one of the best suppliments yet.
