| Sulacu11-15-07, 03:04 AM | Okay, I made this a long while ago, but only recently did I start really editing it and making it tighter. First it was a 'medium giant' with 3 giant HD, which made so little sense it was unpleasant to the eyes. So, I shooped it a bit, but I'm still in LA quandary. +3, even for such ability adjustments and regeneration 1, seems both correct and somewhat steep. I would welcome your criticisms on this Trollkin Before you stands a very stocky figure with a veridian skin, the taint of Trollkin resounding throughout an otherwise dwarven constitution. The result of a no doubt unholy union, shunned by everyone and often eager to chop people up for it all the same. Personality: A trollkin is well known for its lack of trust in those they do not know. Having been violently shaped by a lifetime of contemptuous treatment and dismissals by either their dwarven or giant ancestry, the trollkin that survive are often socially inept. The phrase 'scarred for life' leaps to mind, although there is the odd Trollkin that shows great premise and doesn't allow herself to be put down. Trollkin love battle just as much as their close family, using their toughness, muscle power and dextrous bodies to their advantage over their peers. Any display of weaponized fire or acid however may nullify their desire for battle quickly. Physical Description: Trollkin are dwarf-like creatures with the blood of trolls flowing through their bodies, the result of a vile union of cave-dwellers. Extreme toughness and strength befits them, and they are surprisingly agile for their stocky build. They are averaging just an inch taller than your average Hill Dwarf, and weigh in at about 20 to 30 pounds heavier of stocky build. They have pronounced green skin and crimson eyes and live as long as a normal dwarf, but reach adulthood twice as quickly. Surprisingly, they have not inherited the Troll's ugliness, and can hold fair Dwarven and even humanlike complexions. Despite this, they do inherit from their troll ancestors the tendency to sprout bigger females than males. Relations: It's hard to overstate exactly how socially inept Trollkin tend to be. To be fair, they start out in an unmanagable social environment as it is. Most dwarves don't want anything at all to do with them. Their troll ancestors would more likely bake them in a large pot, together with the foul troll that is responsible for the offspring. Only dwarves indifferent to the circumstances under which the Trollkin came to be may treat them as anything other than an enemy. Ironically enough, their initial predicament tends to force the Trollkin further down the underground cities and into the recesses of Dwarven culture, where some Trollkin forge a companionship with the Duergar or even Drow that live there. Even more rare and awkward than accepted Trollkin are Trollkin that lives on the surface, amidst human society and gnomes, elves, half-lings and half-orcs. Still, the mayfreak Trollkin living in human cities does not have to deal as much with the stigma of being the result of some vile union and may actually find acceptance and appreciation there. Alignment: Because Trollkin are basically dwarves with troll-tainted bloodlines, they exhibit lawful and good tendencies as well as chaotic and evil tendencies, leaving their alignments scattered over both axis. Any. Lands: Trollkin, like both dwarves and trolls, often prefer the lure of the deep. The feeling of the clam air against their hard green skin and the cool air sailing up from underground crevasses are considered homely touches to them. When they do not live in dwarven lands, they dig themselves in even deeper. Some even venture in the underdark and others, shunned away by the Dwarves, take their chances topside throughout Faerūn. Religion: Like they renounce the Dwarves that tend to shun them, they often renounce their gods as well. Although some Trollkin still revere Moradin and other dwarven deities, some favor gods of Giantkind. Most however revere gods that are popular in the area that they inhabit. Language: Common and Dwarven. Names: Those that the dwarves care to name before disowning them acquire Dwarven names. Others might be given names by the being that mentored or adopted them. Some create self-styled names, which are often more titles than names but are mostly rife with Dwarven influence. Racial Traits Trollkin possess the following racial traits. +4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +4 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma. Humanoid. Medium size: Trollkin don't receive any bonuses or penalties for their size in combat. Trollkin base land speed is 20 ft. However, they may move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor and when carrying a medium or heavy load. Darkvision out to 60 ft. Regeneration 1 (like Troll), scent. Trollkin are exceptionally stable on their feet. A Trollkin has a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground). +3 natural armor bonus. +2 bonus on Craft and Appraise checks that are related to stone and metal items. Automatic Languages: Common, Dwarven. Bonus Languages: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, Undercommon. Favored Class: Fighter. Level Adjustment: +3. |
| Bahumut11-15-07, 06:31 AM | NOTE TO READERS: this is not related to my Trollkin (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=943702), take a look at it, why dont ya? :D Racial Traits Trollkin possess the following racial traits. +4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +4 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma. Automatic Languages: Common, Dwarven. Bonus Languages: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, Undercommon. Favored Class: Fighter. Level Adjustment: +3. going from the Savage Species criteria, ill attempt to break this down... Unbalanced ability scores: +1 (overpowered) or +2 LA; the large bonus to both Str and Con lend to this. Regeneration: +2 LA; Characters with regeneration are, for the most part, unkillable. Nat armor bonus: +1 LA; a bonus from +1 to +5 nets a +1. so, all in all, either an overpowered +4 or a +5 LA. hope this helps. |
| Sulacu11-15-07, 06:36 AM | Wow, never thought the LA had to be that high, really. Woe the poor Trollkin that runs afoul of a character carrying an Alchemist's fire or acid flask. :/. I minimalized the regeneration speed to 1, so I hoped that a +1 to LA in that regard would be sufficient. Edit: Oh, and I didn't know someone else made a race named Trollkin on this board. Sorry about that. |
| Threefists11-15-07, 08:06 AM | I did one way, way, way back, about eight or so months ago. Reposted for the OP's pleasure: Troll-Kin (Medium Giant) This creature is slightly stooped at the shoulders, with long, gangling arms and long legs bent in a permanent half-crouch. Possessed of pale Green skin, the creature's face is a mixture of a Humanoid and a Troll, with a long nose like that of a Troll but possessed of the rigidity of a Human's, with long, curving ears and a pair of ivory tusks that jut forwards from the lower jaw. A untidy mop of lank black hair crowns the creature's head and sloping brow, but it's eyes dance with savage merriment. It's garments consist of a loincloth made from some indeterminate hide and a bandolier containing several throwing knives, and it's skin is patterned with dozens of old, faded scars that look self-inflicted. Some notes on the Troll-kin (I apologise if I fudge anything in advance) Medium Size: Gains no benefits to AC or Attack, nor any penalties. Speed: 30 feet. Darkvision: 60 feet. Abilities: +4 Str, +2 Con, -4 Int, -2 Wis, -2 Cha (Troll-kin have some of the tremendous strength and endurance of their Giant ancestors, but also suffer the same mental weaknesses as well) Special Qualities: Giant-Blooded: Can use any item that is specific to the [Giant] type. They are affected by spells as if they were a Humanoid, however, despite having the [Giant] sub-type. Light Blindness: Abrupt exposure to bright light (Such as sunlight or a Daylight spell) blinds the Troll-Kin for 1 round. On subsequent rounds, they are dazzled while operating in bright light. Superstitious:Troll-Kin are barbaric, savage and have a Shamanistic culture, and as such must make two successful saving throws to resist Illusions or Spells with similar effects such as Charm spells, or double the saving throws required by the spell in question. Illiterate: All Troll-Kin are illiterate unless they spend 2 skill-points to learn to read and write all the languages they can speak. Natural Armour: +1 Fast Healing: Troll-Kin heal like certain varieties of Trolls, within certain limits: A Troll-Kin gains Fast Healing 1/Acid at level 6, Fast Healing 3/Acid at level 12 and Fast Healing 5/Acid at level 18. Languages: Giant. Bonus Languages: Common, Draconic, Goblin, Orcish. Alignment: Commonly Chaotic Neutral or Chaotic Evil. Favoured Class: Barbarian. Level Adjustment: +1 Created by a mad archmage centuries ago who sought to bind the ferocity and healing powers of a Troll with the mind and tractible nature of a Human to make the 'perfect' warrior, Troll-Kin are torn between the savage nature of their Troll ancestry and the half-understood longings of their Human blood. They are not a half-Race such as Half-Orcs, -Elves or -Dragons, but a separate race with it's own cultural and social tabboos and laws. Found in areas abundant with plant and animal life, though they prefer areas with swampy terrain or at the very least large bodies of water, Troll-Kin are a study in nature's attempt to cure magic's perversions. They are savage, yet live within the means of their environments, cruel yet capable of great sacrifice for members of their Tribes, and have been taught the ways of Druidism by those Fey that looked beyond their monstrous appearances. Barbarians make up the greatest number of their warriors, although Rangers and, curiously, Rogues make up the secondary ranks of defenders. Clerics, Shugenja, Monks, Paladins, Fighters, Bards and Wizards are all but unknown to the Troll-Kin, but Druids, Spirit Shamans and Adepts are often found in specific tribes, although Sorcerers appear with less frequency. Troll-Kin are savage, barbaric and superstitious, and while normally hostile or at the very least indifferent to strangers (The words 'Not of my Tribe', 'Enemy' and 'Food' are nearly identical in their dialect of Giant), those who display great martial power can earn the respect of the Troll-Kin, though perhaps not their trust or friendship, while those who wield magic, specificly Necromancy (Undead are regarded as both tabboo and a form of ultimate power over Life), Illusion (Due to their penalties to Illusion magic, those Troll-Kin who do become Sorcerers generally take a large number of Illusion or Enchantment spells to take control of their Tribes, and thus Troll-Kin consider such spells powerful gifts from their ancestors or the Spirits to a worthy individual) or Druidic Magic (The magic of the Land, and the Spirits), are reverred by the Troll-Kin, who typically lack high-level magic due to their trollish blood, as powerful messengers of the spirits. Curiously, Troll-Kin refuse to eat or harm Fey unless in dire straits, and sometimes a Tribe of Troll-Kin will apoint themselves protectors of secluded groves that hold Dryads or the pools of a Nyphm or Glaistig. As such, they are oftimes strange bedfellows for Druids seeking to stop hostile creatures, such as Orc tribes or logging opperations, from harming the forests. Hope it helps! ((like the idea of cursed Dwarf half-breeds....very nice, not something that crops up regularly!)) |
| Bahumut11-15-07, 08:58 AM | Wow, never thought the LA had to be that high, really. Sorry about that. dont worry about it, im sure there's been over a hundred before yours or mine...about the regen, its an automatic +2 LA for regeneration. you can get Fast Healing 3 for about a +1 LA though. i wanted my trollkin to have Fast Healing at first, but i know most DMs wont even allow that, except in high powered hack-n-slash games. the re-posted troll-kin above my post is a good example of balancing penalties and bonuses to keep LA low. literally, the only thing i would change mechanically is that i would have fire also bypass their fast healing. for another example of balance, a small race with 20ft. speed, a net penalty on stats, and no other bonuses with Regeneration 1 would still be a +1 overpowered LA. |
| imakuni6711-15-07, 11:41 AM | You could make them have the Wookie's slight regeneration wgere they heal 1 HP per hour, which wouldn't be worth a full LA bonus. Also you could give them mind over body (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#mindOverBody) as a bonus feat. Here's how I'd put it: +4 STR, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha Medium monstrous humanoid +2 Natural armor Speed 20 (as dwarf) Stonecunning Dwarven stability Giant Blood, Dwarf Blood +1 racial against poison Minor Regeneration (ex): A trollkin regenerates 1 hit point per hour. Damage dealt to the trollkin by acid or fire only heals with a night's rest. A trollkin may reattach a lost limb if held for 1 hour to the stump. Darkvision 60, low-light vision, scent Light sensitivity Proficient with all simple weapons 2 claw attacks, 1d4 damage each. Illiterate Bonus feats: Power Attack, Mind Over Body +2 racial bonus to climb, intimidate. Climb and intimidate are always class skills. favored class: Barbarian LA: +2 I listed it as monstrous humanoid, because I don't think that giants are allowed to be less than large. I remember seeing a tree troll that was medium size as a monstrous humanoid |
| Bahumut11-15-07, 12:34 PM | try taking a look at my Trollkin imakuni, it has about the same abilities, except it isnt from dwarf stock =D link is above in my first post...i tried to make it comparable to draconic vs. half dragon...enough fluff and minor benefits to tie into its heritage, but not enough for the LA to get out of hand. |
| imakuni6711-15-07, 01:42 PM | I made them dwarven because that was the original concept the OP presented. |
| Bahumut11-15-07, 06:31 PM | ahh, gotcha, just an exercise in showing balance. if you threw that together on the fly, that's pretty darn good :) |
