| Elluin06-07-07, 07:10 PM | Hi everyone, I made a couple topics asking about classes that I might be thinking about but now I'm on to my race. My first thought was towards half-elves because I think they're pretty cool. This is going to be my first major character and I have a couple of ideas so far. Dwarf cleric - I think this is a cool combo but it's the one I will use if we don't have a healer. I'd rather play something else but I will have a lot of fun with this too if need be. Elf/Half-elf druid - Another option if we need a healer and I like this one better. Can a druid heal enough with no cleric? Anyways I read the players manual and both elf and half-elf seem cool to me. I like half-elves a bit better but I'm not sure if elves are a better choice. Elf/Half-elf bard - I heard that an elf gets to use a longbow and so I might like to be an elf despite liking half-elves a bit more. Half-elf/human fighter - Not really interested in this one but I may end up having to be a fighter. Which of these races is more suited to being a fighter? My last question is about humans. The extra feat and more skill points seems like it might be really usefull. Are those benefits more valuable than what a half-elf gets? |

| ragoftag06-07-07, 10:03 PM | Dwarf-Easily the most powerful (ask the great and wise Yaba) of the CORE races, everyone tends to look down on them (drumroll), but a +2 to Con is always good, and the stacks of bennies can tinge towards the overpowering. 'Course, if your GM never runs goblins or giants, having a +10 to hit orcs is useless. Clerics are vying for the butchest Class out of the gate. Druids start out behind, but are best described as pacing themselves. Seperate or combined, they become the dread CoDzilla! But the first Q I posit is: what kind of GM and what kind of world are you facing? A 'works well with others' is more likely to run a softer game with much less 'punish those who show up the GM' than others. A GM who makes it a point to prove their manhood by putting to his players should always be avoided. Yes, I know, I'm being chauvanist as heck, but I've never played in a female's game where paranoia was the norm. Cope. A long chat with the GM can help your choices, but figure out what role you wish to play and go that way. I love Dwarf Clerics as the Rock archetype, and would cheerfully play a rogue in most anyone's world. Fighters and Rangers are great fun (Elf Rangers are too much fun), but I have never really clicked on Wizards or Sorcerers. If you can get a handle on a GM's world view on classes, do. Races are often the rub. A local GM hates all non-humans. Darkvision and lowlight vision are nearly worthless. I have seen no critters anyone in the party gets bonuses against, save me (human ranger). So, no non-humans in his world. Another has a thing for LotR elves (ok, Orlando Bloom), so guess what the best race to play is? If you're not willing to take the heat for playing a race in disfavor, don't attract the dragon's attention. O, properly handled, the feat monster combination of human and Fighter is lethal! Good Gaming! |
| Elluin06-07-07, 10:10 PM | Well a bunch of us who are playing are going to be new to D&D. We aren't going to be powergaming and I think the DM might just pick up a small campaign for us to get into things. After that I think he'll start creating campaigns for us but my friend says he's a really good DM. |
| baby_kamikaize_kobold06-07-07, 10:43 PM | While I select the dwarf clericI do it under the protest of that you should try dwarf fighter instead. Or maybe a dex based elven fighter(might be cool) But if your limited to those specific choices then I would take the human fighter. But, if you don't want to be a fighter then don't. You gotta do what you gotta do. |
| Elluin06-07-07, 10:55 PM | Dwarf fighter is definately an option. Forgot to put him in those choices. |
| Ninjariffic06-07-07, 11:07 PM | Human is always a good all around choice. It's usually my first pick unless I've got a very specific concept in mind that another race may do better. Yeah, humans. Humans and....and...Half-Tarrasques. Those are Awesome. |
| Kaelen06-07-07, 11:18 PM | Yeah, humans. Humans and....and...Half-Tarrasques. Those are Awesome. You have no idea how much I agree with you. :D But yes, overall Half Elves aren't the greatest race out there right now due to some bad rule choices that were put to them... But in the end, technically anyone can make any character work, as long as you put a deal of work into it. Dwarf Clerics can be cool, you're a more survivable cleric due to your awesome dwarfness. And who doesn't want to be a four foot tall guy who can heal and hold his own in combat? Well, I don't have much experience with druids, as my D&D group has created a massive anti-druid taboo. Sad, I know. Bards, bards, SINGING THIEVES! You can't ask for more! Hey, fighters are good for beginners. And you know, you can run up and smash someones skull in too, that's always fun. Most of the races work for fighter too, even though smaller races like gnomes have a bit more trouble. But I've seen that even work! |
