| Thomar_of_Uointer08-27-07, 09:53 AM | what exchange can i offer to a vampire to bite me? I ask this question because my DM wants a really good reason to become a vampire elf:banghead: Not much, he probably already wants your blood. In fact, he might get suspicious if you offer to pay him to do it. Anyways, I'd make up a backstory about being in a vampire clan completely (or apparently so) wiped out by vampire hunters. This would give the character free will, as he now has no seniors from his clan (or apparently so), and thus a valid excuse to be an adventurer, but still enough dangling plot hooks to satisfy most DMs. Oh, you might want to include something about the character's life before he became a vampire. Due to the long lifespan of elves, it's likely that people he knows are still alive. |
| Dvus08-27-07, 10:53 AM | What reasons does your character have for wanting to become a vampire? If he were were bitten and turned, would your character not then become subject to his sire's wishes? He may not lose all free will, but you would have to obey the vampire that did you the "favor", wouldn't you? If the reasons are your characters, he would probably have to trick the vampire into turning him, and then figure some way out of freeing himself from being in thrall to his sire... unless he was turned as a free vampire. D |

| Dvus08-27-07, 11:06 AM | Ok then, are there any born free willing vampires who are LG and drink tomato juice instead blood Well, that's the more civilized vampires, like Martha Stewart and Oprah. Be careful about being bitten by them. They're weaker and it only takes a carrot stick through the heart to end their reign of terror. But, seriously, I'm a vampire freak, so your question really intrigues me. I really want to know what motivations your character has for being bitten. Is he on a quest for vengeance and wants to become undead to continue the struggle forever? Does he thirst for power, but isn't an arcane caster with the option of becoming a Lich? You could always find a weak, low-man on the totem pole vampire, beat him in combat, and then trade his life for your bite. Promise to help him defeat his sire. If your DM is a little non-conformist, you could find a vampire and drink his blood, thereby taking the curse into your own body and becoming a vampire... Lots of options, if you think about it. D |

| ToastedAmphibian08-27-07, 07:18 PM | Use control undead, or have a friend use control undead for you? You have to have so many hitdice (6?) to become a vampire, and not a vampire spawn. As such any vampire will be atleast lvl 6. If you dont want to be under the controll of a sire, just make sure your more powerful than him, or have friends kill him before you rise. |

Ya, but your paladin buddie could probably turn or seriously put the hurt on mr. vamp, unless you disabled him before hand, thus stealing all the fun. | KriegsaffeNo908-28-07, 09:31 AM | On the drinking of blood: It's a symbolic thing. Vampires were, back in the day, the medieval version of zombies: shambling undead that consumed you(r blood) and in doing so condemned the victim into rising from the grave again. They suck your blood because blood is life, and vampires are the unliving incarnation of death. On being a vampire elf: elves already live to be a good thousand or so years old. Humans and the like have more motive to become vampires despite the associated curses and such because they are, compared to other races, so short-lived, and immortality (even as a sun-loathing plague-husk fueled by darkest magic) seems pretty damn sweet compared to 80 years followed by a dirt nap. Elves, I imagine, wouldn't feel the pull of entropy as badly as humans do. Of course, there's always room for explanation. Perhaps your elven character has spent much of his life around humans and has seen how fleeting life can be, or perhaps he is acutely aware of the sword of time piercing his skin. An elf paranoid about dying of old age--who'd have thunk? Hey, stranger things have happened, and usually in template form. As for getting a vampire to bite you and subsequently axing it before you get to becomin' a slave... Like Toasted Amphibian said, your party pals are your best bet, but you'd have to explain to them carefully why you want to be fatally exsanguinated and rise again as a soulless (but super-powered!) shell--unless they presume it's for a very, very good cause and get to stake-sharpening. |
| 1 ton ghost08-28-07, 11:00 AM | what can you offer said vamp for "a bite"? usually 2 lvls of drain, your alignment, and subsequent character sheet, and the loyalty of your party companions. it's more work than you want in the WotC sense and you need to consider the burden your PC's must endure...or course when you turn CE, egocentrism takes on a whole new meaning. |
| UnrelentingHoror08-28-07, 08:34 PM | Ummm, truthfully since its not that much work for the vampire to change you then release you, assumeing the vampire you find is good for their word, you could probably just pay them something valuable and give them some sort of insurance that you won't screw them over, infringe on their territory, or anything else they may be worried about. This is alot easier with magic useing vampires as you could just submit to a mark of justice or geas or something as part of the contract. But even amongst vampires you may not think of being the type to go for this type of thing, the novelty may be enough to have them hear you out fully and then the shear logic of the situation and how easy and profitable it may be for them with next to no effort could easily win them over. The trouble is finding a vampire you would trust enough to honor the agreement and free you, otherwise you may need to go to your party and get some help fulfilling that end yourself.... at the end of a wooden stake.:D |

I mean after they are already death why they have to eat they even don't have any con score and in this way I don think they have blood:confused: Could be a compulsion or physical adiction, they may not NEED to do anything. Then again who knows, it may come down to DM decision on that. |
| RazielK08-28-07, 08:46 PM | what exchange can i offer to a vampire to bite me? I ask this question because my DM wants a really good reason to become a vampire elf:banghead: Normally you wind up exchanging your free will for it. Some vamps only turn others for slaves. Or you could just get Lestat to turn you. He might screw you for a bit and let you go, waiting for you to come begging back to him. He likes doing stuff like that... |
| ToastedAmphibian08-28-07, 09:34 PM | Well, about the deal making and such. Dont ask the big vampire to turn you. Make an offer to the big vampire in return for him having one of his little vampires turn you. No chance of him not releasing you that way, as youll never be under his controll anyways. (Or the little vampire if your bigger than it is) |
| Krusker08-28-07, 11:36 PM | In my opinion as a great monster fanatic, if you were to become a Vampire you should have a Blood Lust rule. Also if you were a Vampire traditionally they have super str., speed, accuracy, senses, etc. The list goes on but sunlight kills you, garlic turns you off, holy water permanantly burns ur skin. Crosses turn you off, and thats all can think of right now. I have my own stats being made as I type.....:D |
| Dog_O_War08-29-07, 12:06 AM | What could you offer a vampire in exchange for him to bite you... Your neck! Seriously though, you'd want more than for him to just bite you; you want him to drain you dry (0 constitution) and you want to be 5 or more hit dice when he does it. What could you offer him? That is more of a question of what you have and what the DM deems this particular vampire would view as an acceptable exchange. You also must be aware that you will be his thrall whether you like it or not, and that the vampire whom bit you has to release you of his own free will. Also note that even if you seemingly make a bargain for him to simply release you from his control apon arising as a vampire, it will most definately not happen as vampires (including yourself when you rise) are CE. Also, vampires suck (perhaps that was too cheesy). |
| KriegsaffeNo908-29-07, 01:06 AM | Also, vampires suck (perhaps that was too cheesy). Wise words indeed. To be plain, I think that attempting to become a Dungeons and Dragons vampire is not a wise way to go for powergaming, if only because 1. Vampires are full of juicy weak points that everybody knows about and 2. There's the whole "ravenous blood-thirsty monster" bit. Of course, if you think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, go ahead. Boldly go! Embrace your Dungeons and Dragons destiny! Also, it helps if you pump up the dramatic performance. "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!" |
| Legdiwena08-29-07, 06:38 PM | Does your DM allow evil characters? Your alignment changes to evil when you apply the template. |

Also, you are NOT always going to be the vampires thrall! Agian, from the SRD Create Spawn (Su) A humanoid or monstrous humanoid slain by a vampire’s energy drain rises as a vampire spawn 1d4 days after burial. If the vampire instead drains the victim’s Constitution to 0 or lower, the victim returns as a spawn if it had 4 or less HD and as a vampire if it had 5 or more HD. In either case, [B]the new vampire or spawn is under the command of the vampire that created it and remains enslaved until its master’s destruction. At any given time a vampire may have enslaved spawn totaling no more than twice its own Hit Dice; any spawn it creates that would exceed this limit are created as free-willed vampires or vampire spawn. A vampire that is enslaved may create and enslave spawn of its own, so a master vampire can control a number of lesser vampires in this fashion. A vampire may voluntarily free an enslaved spawn in order to enslave a new spawn, but once freed, a vampire or vampire spawn cannot be enslaved again. Therefore, if the Vampire dies, your free. If you have more than twice his HP, your free. If he has other spawn, and their HD + your HD > 2x His HD Your free. Now assuming it takes more than a free action to free a vampire spawn that isnt present, and that you didnt kill all his minions in the process of reaching him, you have a fairly good chance of being free (Although reasearching Mr.Vamp and his associates may be in order.) And a Lawfull one might very well keep his word. (All vampires are CE? You must be kidding right? Surley you have heard of Monk vampires right?) However the +8 lvl adjustment does kinda hurt. Talk to your dm and show him how the +8 is mostly because of the ability to creat spawn. If you dont plan on making an army of your own vampire family mabey you can work something out to lower teh LA in exchange for not spaming your spawn? Also, another way to get a vampire to turn you: Find weak vampire Grapple said vampire Pin Vampire Prevent vampire from talking Use your neck to prevent him from talking He shouldnt be able to escape by turning gaseous. Nowhere in the grapple rules does it say that you can use a supernatural ability or take any standard action you want. |

Surley you have heard of Monk vampires right?)Sorry, I am so used to the 3.0 MM vampire, where they were CE all the time. Quote: Create Spawn (Su) A humanoid or monstrous humanoid slain by a vampire’s energy drain rises as a vampire spawn 1d4 days after burial. And a Lawfull one might very well keep his word. Also, you are using "rules" to make it sound like a guy could get away with becoming a vampire as a spur of the moment decision. Any lawful or neutral vampire worth his salt wouldn't just create another vampire on the spot without making it his thrall, let alone making a more powerful vampire than himself; it is just foolish to think otherwise. CE vampires would do it on the spot, but they'd also make you their thrall. Lawful and neutral vampires most likely would make you their thrall as after careful planning and negotiation, the alignment shift on the charcater part tends to put a null/void stamp on any deals made. You can't trust any vampire with your freedom, let alone your life, so if you go into this sort of arrangement, you'd better be prepared for some servitude (lawful ones would be most accepting of a time served agreement), or have something that the vampire wants more than you as its slave. Evil is paranoid beyond belief, as allies are few and far between (in case you didn't know). |

And just becuase they are evil dosnt mean that they are ALL untrustworthy. Also, why do you assume that every vampire in the campaign world is smarter/crafter/more powerfull than his PC? I meant on the vampires' part. A not-so spur of the moment thing would be for it to just kill him. Also, the int and wis bonus are a good start towards being smarter, as do the aging bonuses. And I assume that every vampire I'll likely run across in a game is smarter/crafter than myself because it gets the survival gears turning, as I plan on remaining alive when we part. I do have a question for you, Toasted; why do you treat vampires like trading cards? If all else fails, find a vampire with less than half yoru hitdice. Corner him in a building during daylight hours and beat the crap outa him. Then, before he goes to 0hp, tell him if he dosnt turn you, you'll destroy him. It's not like there is a vampire store where you can just go out and say, "I'll take the scrawny, imaciated one." Generally speaking the vampires you're most likely to 'find' are well known and thus 'experienced' as people have heard of them. What you propose is really not up to the player as to what he finds, but rather the DM. And as the DM, what would you have the player, whom stands to gain a significant jump on his party mates (and the challenges you've prepared for you campaign) find? |
| Dvus08-30-07, 09:45 PM | I believe that you are much more likely to "find" a lower level vampire as a powerful vampire will surround himself with minions. What's the point of having servants in thrall if you don't use them? Wouldn't he/she send out the cannon fodder to take care of a nusiance than to take care of it him/herself? D |
| locustechpriest08-30-07, 10:16 PM | A not-so spur of the moment thing would be for it to just kill him. Killing someone is just about as spur-of-the-moment as giving him a "kiss". If your vampires are as circumspect as you make them out to be, they will thoroughly consider the options. If you make a good offer, they are probably going to do what best serves them, generally taking you up on the offer. They won't waste "human resources" any more than give a weakling, with an equally weak concept of reality, all the vampire powers he could ask for and his freedom. You drive a good point, but it's important to hit the nail, not the board. It's not like there is a vampire store where you can just go out and say, "I'll take the scrawny, imaciated one." Generally speaking the vampires you're most likely to 'find' are well known and thus 'experienced' as people have heard of them. It's been said, but everyone like mindless repetition, so I will reword it in my (doubtless) uniquely artistic fassion. Research will uncover those "diamonds in the rough", aka. weak vampires, and it may not even be a difficult dig. Vampire lords tend to have weaker minions, weaker minions might even have second-tier slaves. While you may not be able to directly determine a lowly slave's relative HD through research, you could make a wild guess based on knowledge of a vampire's capacity for dominance. You might even hear rumors of a recent vampire outbreak. Fresh vampires might not yet think to hide, too drunk on their new power to realize that they are comparatively weak. In short, the possibilities are endless. |
| Dog_O_War08-30-07, 11:46 PM | You forget though that unless those "minions" are free-willed vampires themselves, then they can only create spawn. Atleast that is how I have interpreted the text, as the what it seemingly alludes to. |
| locustechpriest08-31-07, 03:00 AM | A point well worth airing. I forgot about that completely. One more step in the process then. Kill it's master, then demand that it drain you in payment. Anyway, I'm not trying to write a strategy guide, just saying that it is very possible. (Not that any sane person would want to be a vampire...) |
| UnrelentingHoror08-31-07, 03:48 AM | You forget though that unless those "minions" are free-willed vampires themselves, then they can only create spawn. Atleast that is how I have interpreted the text, as the what it seemingly alludes to. It means lesser vampires as in lesser than the master vampire. Nowhere have I seen a vampire spawn called a lesser vampire or anything besides a vampire spawn in fact except as a calloqueialism used by gamers and definately not in text. So yes, he certainly could have joe 5hd vampire servitor of high baron lord Zomg1337epiclevel von Strahdendude. Besides if baron strahdendude enjoys the concept of 'dumb muscle' in his lordly superiority, even at an average starting int the templates bonus isn't gonna put Joe5hd too far ahead of the game. Also depending on how the low level vampire sees vampirism he might turn you out of cruelty while laughing his behind off and takeing your chest full of gold and gems, cause they recognise it as a curse. I'm not saying that even if you get what your after the vampire of lawful, or chaotic stance would just walk away. He might, but he also might nail your coffin shut before you rise to your new existence and toss you in a swamp somewhere so he doesn't have to deal with you as a rival. Or even tell you that you've lost your priveliges to the city the vampire lives in, and if he sees you again, your dead. |
| Legdiwena09-06-07, 01:33 PM | Would Cloak of Darkness spell from Forgotten Realms setting protect you from being destroyed by sun? |
| ToastedAmphibian09-06-07, 11:59 PM | Look, dont worry about going outside during daylight, jsut dont do it. If you want your party mates to adventuer with you still, just say "Hey, ill be here around 8:00 to go to teh dungeone. Oh, and by the way, rest up, cause if i find ya sleeping, ill eat ya." Then if they rest, no problem. If they dont, they become a vamp liek you, and no problem. Or, they kill you, and then, no problem. |
| locustechpriest09-07-07, 09:17 PM | Demons can see through supernatural darkness. If you can attain that power, then cast Deeper Darkness or the like on yourself, make it permanent. A particular epic feat comes to mind, Permanent Emanation, that way you can still show yourself when you want to. Of course, it is epic... On the question of Cloak of Darkness: Depends on the DM. (I know everyone hates that answer, but I will explain.) One could rule that any form of darkness spell will take the bite out of sunlight, even if it is incomplete darkness (such as the shadowy illumination from DD). One could also rule that any quantity of natural sunlight, even if dimmed, is lethal. Consider this, can a vampire stand in a sheltered area (that is, one not hit by direct light from the sun) and look out? If he can be hit by indirect light, or observe things illuminated by natural sunlight, then shadows should protect him just fine. |
