| Rylnma11-03-07, 05:44 PM | Hey everybody, I have recently re watched Underworld Evolution and was wondering if a half vampire half lycan could work and if so what would the legistics of it be? thanks guys. Sincerely Rylnma |
| IdleAltruism11-03-07, 06:45 PM | If I remember correctly there is a % that lycanthrope will be transmitted to non-fullblooded lycan children. But the Half-vampire template with the Lycanthrope template added to a base creature seems like the most logical choice(level 5 adjustment along with 2 racial HD=ECL 7+) |
| Spikes01k11-03-07, 09:20 PM | To go with the story line here it would be a straight combination of full lycanthropy and vampirism which mechanically possible if they were first a full blood lycanthrope and then contracted vampirism. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph11-03-07, 09:35 PM | Half-Vampire (Libris Mortis) Shifter (Eberron). It's LA +1 and the abilities compliment each other. |
| Neutronium_Dragon11-03-07, 10:16 PM | The standard templates work perfectly well for this. Take a human, apply the lycanthrope template (presumably werewolf), and then apply the vampire template. You will need to apply lycanthrope first, since applying vampire first changes the type to undead and the lycanthrope template can no longer be applied. However, keep in mind that this would be utterly impractical to play as a PC; the level adjustment/ECL involved is enormous. It might work as an NPC villain, however. |
| rampant11-04-07, 02:20 AM | The Vampires of 3.x DnD are based on The big bad Undead Guys like Dracula ala the Castlevania games, basically the older versions. Alot of the newer material regarding vampires tends to emphasize the LIVING in Living dead showing Vampires to quite similar, if a tad more ritualistic, to therianthropes. The 'thropes on the other hand have gone from a two-form being to a three form system, Man-hybrid-beast rather than the simple Man-beast rig. In addition they are credited as being able to learn to control their powers, and being related to the berzerkers of old in some cases (not surprising since alot of the old legends were inspired by berzerkers to begin with). Unfortunately this means that alot of the vampire stuff in DnD is unsuitable to portray "modern" Vampires. While Therianthropes are largely much easier to work with, due to the relative consistency of their abilities vs. the rather varied interpretations of the vampire. If you want an underworld vampire, I'd suggest making a class or Prc. Or at the least changing the vamp template. |
| deathbane11-04-07, 06:24 AM | Lycanthropy is a disease, and vampires are immune to diseases, so unless you or your DM makes a house rule you can't have both. However, if the person were a natural(born that way) lycanthrope, then it should apply if the base creature is a human. |
| SiuiS11-04-07, 08:17 AM | Rules-wise, this was covered in an article here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fc/20070323a). It depends though, if you want to look at it from a non-numbers point of view. Personally, I tire of the 'vampires as romantic yet tragically evil people' and want more of the old fashioned 'vampires are malicious corpses who hunt the living for foul pleasure and satiation'. Fom this point of view, no, a half-vampire, half-lycanthrope person would not work very well (although, technically, you can be full vampire, full lycanthrope, and full whatever you started with, since lycanthropy is an augmentation/curse, and vampirism is a condition that adds to your corpse). For the full flavor, however, I'd say; Remove the vampire's alternate forms. Remove the lycanthrope's full animal form. Alter the hybrid form to resemble a bestial, black-skinned, maybe sorta furry version of the original form. With lots and lots of claw. Apply both the vampire and lycanthrope ability adjustments (if you're one o' those folk who don't quite like the "dead" in "undead" then I'd suggest that you retain the original CON score of the base creature. in humanoid form, it becomes 10- Nothing special. In hybrid form, it goes back to the original (or stays at 10, if the original was less) and then includes the lycanthrope adjustment). only allow all of the spooky vampire powers to function while in hybrid form. This includes a good bit of the bonus feats- Unless he transformed, the main guy was a relative push-over, if I recall correctly. Plus, bulking out, and adding a bunch of modifiers will scare the hell out of whatever he faces, PC or NPC. Other than that, just look through the templates and remove anything that doesn't make sense. Sunlight weakness is fine, but dying in it? Not so cool. Same with the charm gaze- That's for old, monstrous fiends in human shape, not today's fancy, fashionable sex-toys with fangs. Hope this helps you! ~S |
| Thief_of_Hope11-05-07, 12:36 AM | I highly suggest the Half-Vampire template from Libris Mortis that was mentioned earlier. The vampire template in the Monster Manual has such an enormous LA that even if you were playing a high enough level campaign, you're probably down after one or two hits because of your pathetically low number of hit die. Half-vampire has a much more usable LA, and gives you the option of having classic vampire blood-sucking ability. I myself played a half-vampire/natural lycanthrope (werewolf) in one campaign, and he was fun both for me to play and for the group to have around. |
