| kadeity09-10-07, 11:35 AM | In 2nd edition, if anyone recalls, there was a race native to Ravenloft known as the Vampyr. They were neither living nor dead, nor undead. They appeared much like a living creature, but had all the disadvantages of being alive and undead. anyway, i decided that id take this idea a little further, and play around with the idea. Vampyr Medium sized Abberation +2 Con +2 Cha, -4 Wis 30ft movement speed Vampyrs are unlike their Undead counterparts, and are their Edritch flesh does not interact normally with the more tame magics. Because of this, they interact differently with the Healing and Magic than most creatures. -Vampyrs take damage from Both cure and Inflict spells, and recieve the negative effects from both Concecrate and Desecrate spells. -Vampyrs do not heal normally with rest. -Vampyrs are immune to poison, paralysis, disease, nausea, the sickened condition, and energy drain. -Vampyrs are subject to spells that affect undead, but count as an undead creature of double their hit dice for such effects. -Vampyrs do not sleep, though they must meditate four four hours a night to count as rested. -Vampyrs have Darkvision 60ft Blood Drink-Vampyrs may make a melee Bite attack that deals 1d4 points of damage. Damage done in this way heals the Vampyr for a like amount. Vampyrs do not eat or drink, but they must use this ability on one living creature per day or they begin to suffer the effects of starvation. Incarnum Absorbtion-Whenever a creature with at least 3HD dies within 30ft of a Vampyr, the Vampyr may simulate the effects of a death knell spell, except that the creature gets no save (since it is dead) and the Health points gained are permenant. If the creature was an meldshaper, the Vampyr gains +2 hp per HD the creature had. Death Sickeness-if a Vampyr is somehow uses his Blood Drink ability on an Undead or Dead creature, he loses his immunitiy to the sickened condition, and immediately becomes sickened for 1d4 days, at which time the sickened condition passes and the immunity is restored. A Vampyr who is reduced to 0 or fewer hp is disabled. If the Vampyr dies, there is a 10% chance that in 1d4 days he will rise as a masterless Vampire spawn of his HD. ================== so thats it. it needs some work. really alot. im not satisfied with some of the mechanics, so any ideas for abilities would be nice. Id like to keep it LA 0 or +1 Vampyrs make great Warlocks... and i intend to make some substitution levels for the warlock, sorcerer and druid. also, ill probably make a few racial feats for them as well. |
| Asurya09-10-07, 12:00 PM | Well, I like the idea (I tried to created a vampire template with a +0 LA, using D20 modern mutations rules) but I dont quite understand certain rules : * +2 Con: so they are tough, why not * +2 Cha: they make great Cha-related spellcaster.... why is that? a "simple" +x racial bonus on certain skills would be enough methinks * -4Wis: ok, apart from a giant NO DIVINE CASTER flag on this race (which would be of no particular use to them BTW), why should they be blind & deaf, and have so little Will? * why did you set the land speed (what of small races)? nevermind, silly question, your take is a race, not a template, my bad * As I understand D&D, blood loss is handle via Con damage (HP above 0 are just "scratches", or so they say), but that's quite a powerful ability then... probably handle this with : this ability cannot bring a creature above 1 Con, or you risk dying yourself (a la Vampire interview.. or your rule on drinking 'dead' blood when I think of it) Hope that helps EDIT: answearing to me |
| kadeity09-10-07, 12:16 PM | the wisdom minus is because the race is impulsive, and really not at all attentive. i considered an int - as well. the race was also intended to have a druid substitution that allowed the druid to be cha based for them. the Cha bonus is becuase they are naturally talented with the wilder magics, such as Warlocks invocations, or sorcerer spells. Also, they ahve really dominant personalities. The bit about the Blood Drink ability didnt make snese to me. Its 1d4hp, not con. i thin the con drain ability would be too strong.... and this isnt like a vampires drinking, where they pin and literally drain... this is just biting, and getting blood in their mouth. and thats about it. Vampyr's were described as the living equivalent of vampires. Fewer weaknesses, but still not quite alive. In my campaign, they were created by a vampire magus who wanted to be alive again, but not give up his immortality or power. I suppose i should add that they do not age after maturity, and are immune to aging effects. I was going to add a few feats to power up their one natural bite attack... make it so they could drain more hp, maybe even steal spells or something o do with incarnum. anwyay thats all there is right now |
| Thalador09-11-07, 04:25 AM | You really need to add something about the way they heal; I mean, if they take wounds from cure[I] spells and probably [I]heal as well, and if they don't heal normally, how do they get healed? 1d4 hp does not seem like enough, especially when the target is probably unwilling and at higher levels especially; how do they survive the hp toll each round? Perhaps they should heal only, say, without seeing much light (i.e. healing hiptoints at a rate of 1/hour spent in total darkness [not including resting periods]); as they are related to vampires, but dont have such a vulnerability? Other then that I really love the idea. I think that the class is an excellent variant; I cant wait to use it in my next campaign! |
| Rustmonster09-11-07, 09:17 AM | Blood Drink-Vampyrs may make a melee Bite attack that deals 1d4 points of damage. Damage done in this way heals the Vampyr for a like amount. Vampyrs do not eat or drink, but they must use this ability on one living creature per day or they begin to suffer the effects of starvation. Check out the Half-Vampire from Libris Mortis. The blood drink ability of the template would be just the ticket for this race. The blood drink you have is quite strange, as it does almost nothing, and it works when they just bite someone. Blood drink abilities normally work when the opponent is pinned, helpless, etc. It makes little sense to gain HP for a simple bite. You need to be able to DRINK! |
| Rustmonster09-11-07, 06:44 PM | Also, why is it an aberration? Shouldn't it be a humanoid? |
