Variant lycanthropes? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-14-07, 09:18 PM I'm GMing a game, and I recently picked up a copy of Stormwrack and my friend was reading the description of the darfellan race and read something regarding the darfellan are descended from 'orca lycanthropes', and got all googly-eyed wanting to know all the possible lycanthrope types.

I'm fairly open as a gamemaster and don't mind giving the players new options for their characters (with the appropriate level adjustment, mind you :D), so I've done a little research regarding the available lycanthropes throughout the DnD/FR series, and have come across in my travels: Werewolves, Werebears, Wererats, Wereboars, Werebadgers, Werecrocodiles (LEoF), Weresharks (LEoF), Werebats (LEoF), Werecats (LEoF), Wereserpents (SK), etc. I'm sure I'm probably missing a few.

Anywho, my question pertains to is there any other good sources, either in sourcebooks or online, for a good source of variant lycanthropes *or* a sourcebook that gives good building tips for using a base creature to create a lycanthrope from. (Just imagine...a weredrow! :P) For instance, I don't believe I've seen a 'were-orca' anywhere. :P

The monster manual does give you advice on how to build and create new lycanthropes but if you want a good reference get the Monster Manual from 2nd ed. and transfer the Werefox to 3rd ed. standards, be sure to modifty a few things though

04-14-07, 09:30 PM well, there's entomanothropes(were-bugs) on the wizards pages, and were-dragons are at least somewhat established in fantasy...

and Van Richten's Guide to Werebeasts from 2nd edition ravenloft is a good source for fluff.

04-14-07, 09:40 PM Going purely from the MM, you can have any humanoid or giant be a were-(any kind of animal), and you don't have to scour through all the sourcebooks to do it, either.

I threw a herd of ogre were-tyranasaurus rex at my party several weeks ago. Great fun. Ogres have the giant type and t-rex have the animal type, so that is core-rules weirdness for you.

04-14-07, 09:51 PM For third-party products, there is Lunar Nights (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=1716&) (don't bother, it's rather boring), Curse of the Moon (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=6960&) by Sean K Reynolds that presents an LA +1 variant simple template plus feats for improving it (including making it a magical beast).

Note that while the template is naturally LA +1, you can easily drop it to LA +0 by removing the moon hit points quality (this and all kinds of other modifications/additions/etc are discussed in the book itself).
