| mem0ryburn05-02-07, 12:35 AM | I'm sure I could make race specs for a Tauren from WoW but I'd prefer to find one by someone with more experience doing this sort of thing. If anybody has one or can do one up that'd be great. If not I'll probably get on it in a few days and post my own. |
| Xandar Dae'Ithil05-02-07, 12:45 AM | It already exists. Page 188 of the MM. ^_^ |
| Return of the Flumph05-02-07, 12:48 AM | It already exists. Page 188 of the MM. ^_^ Smartass. They released a Warcraft d20 sourcebook (a few, actually). Tauren are in there. |
| mem0ryburn05-02-07, 12:51 AM | i'm inclined to disagree. i have 3.0 care to post details? |
| mem0ryburn05-02-07, 01:04 AM | i'm planning on buying the WoW d20 books but in the meantime does anyone have a link to tauren stats from it? |
| ericSHINRA05-02-07, 01:10 AM | i'm planning on buying the WoW d20 books but in the meantime does anyone have a link to tauren stats from it? No WoW d20 SRD exists to my knowledge and posting actually stats straight out of the books is a no-no on these boards. |
| TobaWareho05-02-07, 01:25 AM | Use the Minotaur from Dragonlance Campaign Setting +4 str, -2 Dex, -2 Int, -2 Cha +2 NA Also gives a bunch of other small things. Nicest part, no lvl adjustment. If this will get me in trouble, please post, as I am not sure on giving partial descriptions. |
| mem0ryburn05-02-07, 01:29 AM | Argh. alright then. What I have so far is... +2 STR +2 CON AC +4 +4 to Listen, Spot and Search Charge, d6+6 (additional d6s at certain levels yet to be determined) Natural Cunning (Immune to maze spells, never lost, track enemies, uncanny dodge) - Longbow, 20 arrows - Club seems a little uneven. any suggestions? |
| TobaWareho05-02-07, 01:30 AM | Ummm, with no LA?? You cant give all +'s with no LA. Just a fact of life. If you want to use the one you just posted, I'd drop a -2 penalty on Int and Cha. Also, you might have to drop stuff out of other catagories to make up for the random +4 ac??(Im assuming natural armor). Maybe a -4 int, -4 cha? Seems to me if your going by the MM standard, your boned into using a LA. |
| mem0ryburn05-02-07, 01:32 AM | see, I was thinking minuses to INT but minotaurs are pretty smart. Clever at least. Also thinking minuses to DEX and CHA but neither feels right. |
| TobaWareho05-02-07, 01:40 AM | I would say they arent int chars. They don't really have much in the Knowledge skills, nor any other int skill. All their main skills(Spot, Listen, Survival) are all Wisdom based. Thus the no - to wisdom, but int. |
| adgramaine05-02-07, 02:02 AM | ...telling the guy to play a minotaur isn't a fair statement. Tauren have a rich tribal heritage that made me want to play WoW in the first place. Work with what I posted, and it'll get ya close enough to the mmo till you can buy the book. Or save yourself the work and just use the minotaur, but RP the ever-loving Abyss out of their tribal heritage. It'll work in a pinch. +2 Str, -4 Dex, +4 Con, -2 Int, +2 Wis, +2 Cha Large size Base Land Speed: 20 feet (4 squares) +4 racial bonus to Survival skill checks +4 racial bonus to all Professions (herbalism) skill checks (maybe alchemy, but I doubt it. If anything, it'd be a +2 to alchemy instead of the full +4). +2 natural armor bonus. Endurance, bonus Feat Resilience: Tauren gain an extra 3 hp per HD. Favored Class: Druid. To get the most "shamanistic" feel, try a Spirit Shaman (CDivine). Hunter might be best emulated by the Scout class (CAdventurer). YMMV, but that's what I'd do. Off-hand, I am tempted to give them the powerful build ability to increase carry capacity, but I don't want to mostly because it would allow them to use Huge size weapons, and let's face it... that's twink. Anyone wanting to twink that way already knows how to get around it, so I'll not feed fuel to that fire. So, you might want to give them the ability to move at full rates regardless of encumbrance (like dwarves). The Ability bonuses were really the only thing I had to think about for a while. While strong and clever, their main points are that they are slow, wise, and incredibly tough. Their size and penchant for large weapons provoked me to give them a slight Str bonus, but hit them hard with Dex. As they tend to be very social and in tune with nature, I gave them Wis and Cha bonuses to fit their druidic natures. Tauren wouldn't have natural cunning, nor great senses like our beloved minotuars, nor would I give them powerful charge, as the bulk of them would be druids and spirit shamans IMO. Level Adjustment: +2, if you are keen on using Monstrous Humanoid HD, in which case I would give them 3 (making a first level ranger the same as a level 6 character for the uninitiated...). Without the racial HD, I'd make them a +4, bare minimum. Tauran have a host of racial bonuses, so they would be hard to stat out fairly. I think to do them real justice would take me a few more minutes than I'd rather spend and they'd end up requiring a huge LA. I've never seen the WoW d20, never care to. If I want to play WoW, I'll log in for a spell. When I throw dice, I play DnD. No offense meant to die-hard WoW fans, but that's just me. If I play DnD, then yes, minotaurs are much cooler creatures. More like the mythical beings they are supposed to be. 'Nuff said. |
| mem0ryburn05-02-07, 02:29 AM | Thanks, everyone. Especially that last post, very helpful. The plan is to play a Tauren wizard. I actually don't play WoW due to system restraints on my lappy but I play the TCG. I'm currently liking it more than Magic due mostly to its more straightforward gameplay and less convoluted decklist. |
| adgramaine05-02-07, 02:34 AM | I play Tauren, almost exclusively. Love 'em. Best culture experience in the game if you take the time to read everything the NPCs are actually saying, IMO. Glad you liked the post - hope it helps! :D edit-------> I'd play a sorcerer instead of a wizard, to get the most mileage from the stats I made. Just a thought... |
| Khoran05-02-07, 07:14 AM | If memory serves, the Tauren from the WoW RPG Book had +2 Con and -2 Dex and I am almost sure they were Large Creatures (Don't quote me on that one though.) There are some other things I do remember, but I don't think I'm allowed to say them. Hell, I've probobly said to much as is. |
| AMGriffin05-02-07, 10:38 AM | Based on their WoW statistics I got the following for them in D20 form: Tauren • +4 Strength, -2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, +2 Wisdom • Medium Sized Monstrous Humanoid • 30 feet base land speed • Psi-like ability: Stomp 1/day • Powerful Build • Bonus feat: Improved toughness • +2 racial bonus on survival, heal, and handle animal checks. • Fire, Cold, and Electric resistance 5 • +3 Natural Armor • Favored class: Druid • LA+2 |
| SolkaTruesilver05-02-07, 10:41 AM | I would say, take the Goliath's specs. I think they fit the idea |
| Geregald05-02-07, 11:59 AM | Level Adjustment: +2, if you are keen on using Monstrous Humanoid HD, in which case I would give them 3 (making a first level ranger the same as a level 6 character for the uninitiated...). Without the racial HD, I'd make them a +4, bare minimum. Tauran have a host of racial bonuses, so they would be hard to stat out fairly. I think to do them real justice would take me a few more minutes than I'd rather spend and they'd end up requiring a huge LA. I don't know if this rule is from Savage Species or not (don't have that book), but a DM I used to play with used the following rules for playing Monsters as Characters with Class Levels: Scrap the Hit Dice and Skill Points normally given to a "standard" monster of that Race. Instead, treat the character as a 1st-Level INSERT CLASS HERE for determination of HP and Skill ranks. Use the Level Adjustment stated in the Monster Manual (or similar) that the creature is drawn from + Class Levels to determine Character Level. What this does is allows the Level Adjustment for stat modifiers, natural attacks, and special abilities. An enemy race's natural HD are essentially "its level" - this is reflected in many, many things in the Monster Manual, too numerous to even attempt to quote. Now, here's how it works in effect: NORMAL RULES 1st-Level Bugbear Fighter~ ** Large number of bonus stats ** Darkvision as Half-Orc ** Natural Armor ** Feats, HP, & Skillpoints equal to 3rd-level non-Human character (3 levels of Monstrous Humanoid) PLUS HP, Skillpoints, Feats of 1st-level Fighter ** +1 LA 3 HD + 1 LA + 1 Class Level = 5th-level character (effectively). HP, Skills, & Feats appropriate to a 5th-level character despite only 1 Class level. MODIFIED RULE 1st-Level Bugbear Fighter~ ** Stats as above ** Darkvision as Half-Orc ** Natural Armor as above ** Feats, HP, & Skillpoints as 1st-level Fighter ** +1 LA 1 LA + 1 class level = 2nd-level character (effectively). You've lost the HP, Skills, & Feats a Bugbear naturally has by being a 3rd-level monster, but Level Adjustment is retained. This variant rule, be it published or homebrew, made monstrous & templated characters much easier to use. And no, it doesn't make a Half-Dragon or Vampire over-powered because they still only have that 1 Class Level but are treated as 4th and 8th level characters, respectively, for XP gains. (Gonna be a looooong time before a 1st-level Vampire character earns a level by this rule.) An alternate to this, if you absolutely feel that the stats & abilities granted by the creature type itself are too strong for the stated LA, do the following: Use Rules as Above plus... ** Divide the Natural HD of the creature by 2, and round down. ** Add this number to the LA A good example is Bugbear VS Hobgoblin. Both have an LA of 1 naturally, but the Bugbear gives far more for the same +1 LA. Using the rule above, a Bugbear adopts a +2 LA, and the Hobgoblins retains the +1 LA (no natural HD - Level 1 Monster) -Geregald |
| Gorlick_Da_Consumer05-02-07, 12:58 PM | i'd say it would work like a base race, the Taurens aren’t as powerful as a minotaur when they start off, they are more of ancestral cousins. i'd go with this HD: as class State adjustments: +4 str +2wis -2 int -4cha (the taurens are nimble for creatures of their size so no penalty to dex, the AC penalty for being large covers the large size) size: large (they are big enough) base speed: 30 (they move plenty well) [70ft after reaching a total lvl of 5+ in the original WoW booklet that comes with the game it says they gain an ability to run as fast as a mount because they're to big to ride anything] special abilities: (psi like ability 1/day stomp) (can take powerful build for first lvl feat) +2 racial bonus on survival, heal, and handle animal checks ( like AMGriffin said, it makes prefect since but i would add a +2 to knowledge{nature}) no natural armor, they wear armor and such because they took a more civilized path then their minotaur cousins. languages: common, giant, orcish, goblin (orcish and goblin are optional for the DM) Favored class: druid (or another nature based class of the Dm’s desecration) |
| fuzzycrusader05-02-07, 03:54 PM | isnt a Tauren wearing leather a little twisted? |
| adgramaine05-02-07, 03:55 PM | I had to delete my first post. Made me sound like some WoW fan-boy. *ahem* Tauren land speed should be reduced, but they should be given option for a racial feat at say level 10 or so. Their Dex and Int are the only dump stats I could perceive while thinking about how I'd design the d20 stats after all the hours I have logged playing one. Now then, I am off to play Kingdom of Loathing! :D |
| Wolf7205-02-07, 04:20 PM | I 2nd the DLCS minotaur ... or go to a borders/barnes&nobles and see if they have a copy of the WoW d20 book |
| Shedeo05-02-07, 04:28 PM | If I had to make a Tauren, here's how I'd do it. +4 STR, +2 CON -2 DEX, -2 INT Monstrous Humanoid (2 Racial Hit Dice) Medium Size Powerful Build Base Speed 20' A Tauren does not take a speed reduction for having a load greater than light, nor does he take a speed reduction for wearing medium or heavy armor. Weapon Familiarity: Tauren Halberd, Tauren Totem Stomp: 1/4 rounds, a Tauren may stomp the ground and cause a shockwave. This shockwave deals 1d6 points of damage, +1d6/5 hit dice and effects a 10' radius +10'/5 hit dice. A reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 hit dice + STR mod) takes no damage. Anyone who takes damage from this effect must make a fortitude save (DC = Reflex Save) or be stunned for 1d4 rounds. +2 racial bonus on Survival. World-Wise: A Tauren recieves a +2 racial bonus on any skill checks made involving plants or animals. Natural Weapons: Gore, dealing 1d8 piercing damage, 20x3 critical. Favored Class: Barbarian Level Adjustment: +0 Tauren Halberd: 2-handed exotic weapon, 2d6 slashing or piercing damage (medium), 20x3 critical. This weapon may be used at reach or against adjacent foes. Tauren Totem: 2-handed exotic weapon, 1d10 bludgeoning damage (medium), 20x4 critical. Racial Feats Improved Stomp Requirements: Tauren, BAB +2 Benefit: You may may add your constitution OR wisdom modifier (whichever is higher) to the DC of your Stomp ability. Great Gore Requirements: Tauren, Improved Natural Attack (Gore) Benefit: When you charge with your gore, you multiply the damage by 2. Also, you may now set your gore against a charge. Sonic Stomp Requirements: Improved Stomp, BAB +14 Benefit: For every 1d6 points of damage you deal with your Stomp ability, you deal an additional 2d6 sonic damage. |

| Shedeo05-03-07, 05:50 PM | With two racial hit dice? I'd put that at LA +0. |
| Wolf7205-03-07, 06:04 PM | with 2 racial HD and +0LA, a PC will be a 1st lvl character while everyone else is 3rd ... try soldarin's ecl calculator (ecl=LA+HD) http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/shadows/Handbook/ECLcalc.html I got a 1.9 ECL which is about 2 ECL ... or +0 LA. |
| Holy_Beholder05-03-07, 06:58 PM | In Warcraft 3, they were at least large size, and had powerful build. They hit people with massive trees for clubs. On the other hand, they were expensive, and could be countered by mountain giants. Also, large characters tend to be iffy, since there are too many 5 ft corridors. They would fit, but can't fight well in them. |
| Lionhearted05-03-07, 07:03 PM | Oh please just go buy the World of warcraft the roleplaying game book, and no Taurens doesnt have a rich culture, they're ripoffs of native american indians. |
| Shedeo05-03-07, 07:10 PM | Whom, indeed, have a rich culture. And... If we all want to try and make our own versions of the races... That's our prerogative. *shrugs* Besides, its fun! ^^ |
| Holy_Beholder05-03-07, 07:17 PM | Well duh they have a rich tribal culture. As for ripping it off, Asian and European stuff has been ripped off hugely. |
| TheAngryFish05-03-07, 07:19 PM | I have the book +4 str +2 con -2 dex large 10' space/10' reach tauren charge:gore 1d8+1 1/2 str +2 handle animal and survival exotic proficieny with tauren totems and tauren halberds martial proficieny with shortspears and longspears +1 on attack rolls with short spears and longspears LA +1 pretty amazing IMO |
| Lionhearted05-03-07, 07:33 PM | Well duh they have a rich tribal culture. As for ripping it off, Asian and European stuff has been ripped off hugely. yes indeed, but they didnt turn them into cows on two legs :D |
| Shedeo05-04-07, 12:46 AM | Well, its not so much that... Any race could be a "rip off" of any actual earth culture. Anywho, I have the book, but I'm not too keen on the books representation of them. |
| Soulless_Enigma05-04-07, 03:21 PM | @ OP Just get the book. I have it, and I think they accurately portrayed all the races (except the Forsaken). They also have racial levels for most races in the book - tauren included. Meaning no LA. And no, racial levels are different to monster classes. Also, make sure you get the revised edition WoW RPG, not Warcraft RPG. Very slight name difference, but the content is quite different |
