With RPGA finally coming to my local game store I was looking for a new and interesting concept for a character. Having finally gotten a look at Magic of the Incarnum, I thought it was an interesting idea, even more so with my favorite race from Eberron, the Warforged.

So far one person I told about it though it would be a cool concept, while the other I told about it said that it wasn't possible cause Warforged don't have a soul.

I wanted a wider range of feedback. Either way I will probably be uding the idea but I wanted to hear what others could contribute to the concept.

mechanically, it is possible. the only requirement for using incarnum is to have a CON score. And undead cna bypass that with a single feat.

Of course it would work. Actually, the idea of Incarnum even being unique to (or at least pioneered and favored by) warforged is pretty cool. Kind of like the life-force infused 'circuitry' (for lack of a better term) is very conducive to flow of essentia. Perhaps (as a house rule, of course) it is actually essentia that grants life and sentience to the warforged. Great warforged Incarnum masters could take flesh-and-blood students on occasion, but they would be considered exotic and maybe a touch odd.

I always liked the idea of different races/cultures developing different magical traditions.

I pretty much know it would work mechanically, since there is no rules against it or anything, and if so that would be lame. Since this RPGA game is set in Eberron itself it is indeed possible that my character was the first of his kind, kinda like the Psiforged or something like that. With the game being RPGA it is impossible to know if others don't already have the combination, but I am hoping to at very least be unique at the store.

I do like the idea about essentia being what gave the Warforged true life, but not all of them harness it so. But it does bring up the question as to how were they infused with essentia in the first place?

Going with the idea that I had already thought out somewhat, was just thinking that during his creation a strand of Incarnum of some form passed thru his Creation Forge.

I think what malykoth meant was that all warforged are animated by essentia. I like your idea though, and may steal it for a character of my own, if you don't mind.

Yeah, I know what he ment by all Warforged. As for taking the idea, that is fine, just as long as it's not RPGA Eberron. Cause if by some weird chance I am the first to come up with it I want to be known as the first. lol

Yeah, warforged can use incarnum just fine.

Now, one thing you do have to worry about is equipment slots. A warforged's body armor takes up the armor slot, which means that if their body armor is enchanted (very likely at the levels that you get the soul chakra), they can't bind soul soulmelds. They can still shape them, they just can't bind them to the chakra without the Split Chakra feat. Still, if the warforged's armor isn't enchanted, then this isn't an issue because it's the same as mundane equipment.

You know, it's something that I always wondered about them...

What are the rules in RPGA about non-core material like Psionic books and Incarnum? Allowed if WOTC? Under the agreement of the dm?

The RPG requires you to get campaign cards to "unlock" their usage.

Well since this is the Eberron Xen'drik Expedition that I am going to be playing in. With the rules for RPGA, everyone joins the faction, and the faction I'll be with would allow two of the classes from Magic of the Incarnum. Would I still need a card to unlock them at that point? I sure hope not.

Me too. I always wondered why WotC didn't devise different or tweaked magic for different races.

It makes a lot more sense that one magic system fits all.

While not in Eberron, I did once play a warforged incarnate (lawful). It was only 4th level, so I only had one chakra bind, which I used to get Lightning Gauntlets on the hands to deal massive damage with the incarnate weapon.

Also, cerulean sandals work nicely with adamantine body.

In Player's Guide to Eberron, under Magical Traditions, it talks about an island (Kapaerian Island) near Xen'drek where the skarn and rilkans live almost exclusively. Going under the "warforged powered by essentia" jazz, you could say the char went to Xen'drek after the last war, got lost, and washed up on the island, where the natives helped him to unlock the abilities of the energy powering him.

Just a right off the top of my head sort-of thing.

If you play in the Crimson Codex faction in the RPGA's Xen'drik Expeditions campaign, you can play either an incarnate or a totemist (and/or be a skarn) without needing a campaign card to unlock those classes. You can play a soulborn in the Covenant of Light faction. All other types of incarnum-using classes/races need to be unlocked with a campaign card.

To answer the more general question of what is allowed and what isn't in an RPGA campaign, the simple answer is this: it depends on the campaign. Each campaign has its own rules for what "non-core" rules are allowed and what aren't. Some things are allowed in one but not the others. Sometimes things may be allowed in one campaign, but you might need a campaign card to unlock those rules items in another campaign. Looking at the Campaign Sourcebook for the individual campaign will give you what you need to know.

there IS distinct stuff for very different metacultures... Like Shugenja and Wu Jen (asianesque cleric and wizard), and various PrC.

My Warforged artificer had access to incarnum. A giant wood/metal robot looking thing jumping on unsuspecting enemies as it tries to bite them with bite of the vampire...always fun. That and the claws.

But now he resides in a cement bunker with no access to the outside world, except for a portal ring that leads into my new characters bag. He makes things and thats about it.

I would like to thank everyone who responded and answered some of my questions that I had. But unfortunatly they have pretty much come to nothing as during the RPGA event at my local game store tonight I was told that Magic of the Incarnum was not allowed in the campaign. Oh well, three weeks of concept building and making the character out the window.
