| NerdNumber105-05-07, 06:15 PM | (please note that warforged aren't restricted to Eberron, so don't push me off to the Eberron board.) War is a dynamic system, having one make of warforged may not be the best path. Because of this, several varients of warforged were created. These rules are in addition to normal warforged racial traits unless otherwise stated. mk-02 "Shreder" Abilities: +2, -2, +2, -2, -2, -2 (this replaces the normal warforged ability modifiers) Natural Weapon: 2claws (1d6) (this replaces the slam attacks a warforged normally has) +1 natural armor (this is in addition to any sort of armor bonus, such as composite plating) Aquatic Warforged +0, +2, +0, +0, -2, -2 (This replaces the normal warforged ability modifier) swim speed: 20ft (+8 to swim checks, may take 10 when threatened) Wood plating: +1ac, - max dex, -0 armor check penalty, 5% spell failure (This replaces normal composite plating) 2slam attacks (1d3) (this replaces normal warforged slam attacks) More to come (hopefully). Anyone else have ideas or comments, please post them. |
| Lionhearted05-05-07, 06:41 PM | Mass producing similar soldiers then enhancing them (Grafts) makes more sense than makes several different kinds with similar abilities yet different enough not to be massproduced. |
| NerdNumber105-05-07, 07:39 PM | I was just making a shaky pretext to make warforged subraces. You can also say that different makes were attempts at better designs or regional variations (a german tank is different from an american tank, etc.). |
| calronmoonflower05-05-07, 08:36 PM | Warforged can be created with templates. That allows for quite a bit of variation. |
| NerdNumber105-05-07, 08:45 PM | I just love warforged and want to make subraces so I can use it for other roles. I like not having to eat or sleep and being able to repair myself with a wrench. Elf-fans get a choice for any class, orcs have environmental varients, why not warforged? |
| Captain_Kobold05-06-07, 12:44 AM | Warforged are mostly standardised because they were made by a single family monopoly in order to replace a single human soldier on a 1-to-1 basis. There were a few specialised variants produced (The Warforged Charger and Scout. MMIII) Most of the variation from the standard was in the protective plating given to elite units, with heavy infantry having an adamantine layer, and others having mithril, or even none, for greater versatility. They are designed to be able to use a standard-issue sword and shield, (Or whatever equipment their role required) and fight in the same way a human unit would. They weren't designed with a natural weapon specifically (It was assumed the purchasing army would supply them with superior weapons.) They have a slam attack simply because a being with arms made of iron, wood and granite is never really considered 'unarmed'. Thus, variations on the standards are more likely to be due to modification after creation, or experimental models, and so be one-offs or rare. You are unlikely to get 'sub-races'. |
| Vharuck05-06-07, 12:46 AM | They have body feats. They can then take classes. Want a warforged who's stronger than most? Put your highest attribute in Strength. Not trying to rain on your parade, but often I think the question should be asked, "Does this need a new method? Can what I want be done with existing rules?" If it can, you'll save yourself a lot of work and playtesting. |

What about other worlds. Warforged could be made by several groups. Also, lets say the war that led to warforged creation lasted for a few millenia more And the secret to warforged creation was held by all nations. The resulting arms race would give birth to many different forms. Maybe the forges were made to gradually update their designs based on which warforged returned. They have body feats. They can then take classes. Want a warforged who's stronger than most? Put your highest attribute in Strength. It is because someone wants the flavor of a race while playing a different role, without sacrificing power. |

As far as I'm concerned, Drow and Aquatic elves have possible places in a world, with a chance of the winged elves if there is a good justification. All the other elven sub-races should be shoved in a blender and poured back into standard molds. If you want to play an elf from a different culture than the standard, then go for it. Its quite possible to do it with the standard elf racial. Maybe even swap around the weapon proficiencies and favored class. You nailed it right on the head there NN1. People play elven subraces because they want to be as strong as a half-orc, or an Int 20 Wizard, yet still retain that 'Elven Superiority'. |

Plus most player races have subraces in the MM. Why can't the race that is forged for war have a navy model (swim-speed) or a stealthier creation for jungle fighting? I would think that a aquatic warforged would be more plausible than an aquatic orc or elf. Navies want tirless soldiers (that won't sink) too.
