The Lupin. Their stats are in Dragon Magazine #325, p85, or in Best of Dragon.

SS anthropomorphic races are some of the most broken, cheesiest things I have ever seen.

It's like a whole bag of cheeto's run over by a steamroller.

How are they cheesy?

First, they have absolutely no story or explanation for there existence. They're just there.

Second, have you looked at them? Look at the bonuses for their hit dice. Full BAB, good reflex and will saves, and insane ability score bonuses.

Like it's any worse than the anthromorphic baleen whale...

Although it's not anthromorphic, it is a dog race. 0 LA Marruspawn, they have fire resistance and hearing so good they can hear a heart beat. Stuff like that.

I was talking about SS anthropomorphic races in general, not a specific race. The baleen whale is definitely the cheesiest of them all.

The probable reason why there's no reason for their existence is because that's going to vary from campaign to campaign. Maybe a druid sect created them (next stage up from Awakening). Maybe a wizard did. Maybe they evolved naturally, or were created by some animal god. Maybe they're humans who transformed through shapeshifting magic. And it's quite possible that there are multiple origins for the things in a given world (different ones created in different ways).

Putting down an "official" origin would just get in the way.

Hengeyokai (dog) would be an LA +0 race.

Full BAB and good reflex and will saves are traits of the Monstrous Humanoid type which all Anthropomorphic Animals have. So, what you are saying is Monstrous Humanoids are all cheddar cheese monsters that hit all the time, can dodge a bullet, and have unbreakable wills.

Do a little research next time on what you are talking about.

Can you read what I type? Monstrous humanoid is a good type, and that is part of the reason they are broken. The INSANE ABILITY SCORE BONUSES are the main reason.

And what type would you grant an Anthropomorphic Animal?
They seem pretty "monstrous" to me.

You know, you really don't have to be so angry at everyone all the time. Try not being so rude--it might help.

I would recommend the Lupin.
You can find them in Dragon Compendium.
Very nice race, created originally on Mystara, but easy to adapt to any other world.
Despite their name, lupins are not necessary wolf-like (lupus = wolf in latin, loup = wolf in french), some have a fox appearance, some other a dog appearance.
And if you don't like their background history with/against werewolves, you (or your DM) can link them to gnolls instead, or even hound archons if you want something more planar, then becoming a little aasimarish ;)

Monstrous Humanoid is more of a not-too-bad type.

+1 BAB, d8 HD, two good saves, 2 skill points/level.

Okay, the ranger gets +1 BAB, d8 HD, two good saves... but he gets 6 skill points/level.

Monstrous Humanoids get Darkvision. Otherwise they don't really get anything of consequence. (Anyone who doesn't have those proficiencies anyway probably isn't going to have much use for them.)

Rangers get a truckload of class features, plus spellcasting progression.

So Monstrous Humanoid is still vastly inferior to a PC class level.

It compares nicely to plain Humanoid as a type, but that's only because Humanoid is beaten by everything except levels in Commoner.

So those guys *should* be getting strong stat bonuses, because they're already playing catch-up just in terms of equalling out their racial hit dice with actual character class capabilities, and then most of them have level adjustments on top of that. (And this ignores the fact that, in the long term, fixed stat bonuses fade in power while high-end class abilities (which they're not getting because they're set back several levels by their ECL) grow in power.)

There are one or two bad ones, yes (like the whale). But most of them are pretty much fine as-is rather than being ridiculously overcosted as most ECLed races are.

I agree completely with the above, it's the main reason why I allow UA's LA burnoff rules along with LA 1 and LA 2 races. LAs are specifically designed to be inferior to class levels to favor the PHB races (and any other LA 0 race).
